Anyone received their ny unemployment tourism recovery payment yet?

So back in October 2023, I applied for the Tourism Recovery Fund after finding out I was eligible since I worked in a hotel before covid hit. I got an email in December saying I was approved for around $3800 and would get it in 4-6 weeks. It's now been almost 12 weeks and still nothing in my bank account or mailbox. I tried calling the number but it's always busy and the website just says "payment pending". Has anyone actually received their money from this program? I'm starting to think this whole thing was just false hope. Really need this cash to catch up on bills that piled up after being out of work for so long. Anyone else still waiting or had any luck getting through to someone who can actually help?

Still waiting on mine too. Approved in November for $4100 and nothing so far. The worst part is you can never get anyone on the phone who knows anything about this program. I was told by one rep it could take "up to 6 months" which is ridiculous when people need this money now. Seems like they approved everyone then realized they didn't have enough funding.

6 MONTHS?!? Thats insane. They told me 4-6 weeks. What a joke the ny unemployment system is 😡

0 coins

Yep. The left hand doesn't know what the right is doing over there. Every person tells you something completely different.

I heard from someone who got theirs that they never received any notification, it just showed up one day. So maybe keep checking your account?

After weeks of frustration trying to reach someone about my tourism recovery payment, I finally found a solution! I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback with an actual agent. Talking to a real person helped me discover my payment was held up due to a verification issue they never notified me about. The agent fixed it on the spot and my money hit my account 5 days later. It was the best money I've ever spent to finally get my benefits paid. Check out this video to see how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

this sounds like an ad... does this actually work?

0 coins

Zoe Walker

•

Not an ad, I was just desperate after trying for weeks. It actually connected me with someone who could help instead of the endless hold music. My payment was stuck because they had a typo in my address that I couldn't see online.

0 coins

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

Zoe Walker

•

No catch - it just saves you from waiting on hold for hours. They call and wait on hold for you, then ring your phone when they get a real person. I was skeptical too but it actually worked when nothing else did.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

It's just a call service, not one of those shady "we'll fix your claim" places. They only connect the call, you talk directly to the unemployment office yourself. That's why it worked for me - I finally got to talk to someone who could see what was wrong with my claim.

I got mine last week! Applied in September, approved in November for $3200, and it just showed up in my account randomly. No notification or anything. I had basically given up on it. Check your bank accounts carefully - mine just said "NYS BENEFITS PAYMENT" as the description, not specifically Tourism Recovery.

0 coins

Thanks for letting me know! I'll keep checking my account. Did you ever call them or did it just show up without you doing anything?

0 coins

I called like 20 times but never got through to anyone helpful. It literally just appeared one day. The whole process is a mess tbh.

Here's whats actually happening with the Tourism Recovery Fund (I work adjacent to state govt): They approved WAY more applications than they had funding for, thinking many wouldn't qualify during verification. Now they're slowly processing payments as more funding gets allocated. They're prioritizing by application date and financial need. If you applied later than Sept/Oct, you're probably in for a long wait. The program is legit, but completely overwhelmed. Keep checking your accounts - payments come in batches every 2-3 weeks.

This makes so much sense. Classic NY government move - promise money they don't have 🤡

0 coins

Do you know if there's any way to check where you are in line? The website is useless.

0 coins

Unfortunately no. The internal tracking system is a mess too. Your best bet is to keep trying to call, or use a service like claimyr.com to get through to a human who might be able to check your status.

I've been dealing with NY unemployment on and off for years and this is ALWAYS how it goes. They announce some new program, everyone gets excited, then it takes forever to actually get the money. I'm still waiting on my tourism payment too ($3950 approved in November). My neighbor got hers though - took exactly 14 weeks from approval date. So there is hope!

JUST GOT MINE TODAY!!!!! After waiting for 15 weeks! $4230 deposited straight to my account this morning. No email, no notification, nothing. Just randomly checked my account and boom there it was. Don't give up hope people!!!

When did you apply/get approved? Trying to figure out if there's any pattern to when they're sending payments

Applied Sept 28, approved Nov 4. So about 15 weeks from approval to payment.

CONGRATS!! 🎉 Hope mine comes through soon too!

Listen up everyone - I FINALLY got through to someone who actually knew about this program. Here's the deal: 1) They're processing payments in batches based on when you were approved and your industry sector 2) Hotel/accommodation workers are in the current batch being processed 3) Restaurant workers are next 4) If the system flagged anything about your application (even a minor discrepancy), you go to the back of the line 5) They ARE still sending payments, but they're spreading them out because of budget allocation issues 6) If you were approved, you WILL get paid eventually 7) You can check if there are any issues with your application by calling the main unemployment line and specifically asking them to check for "payment hold codes" on your Tourism Recovery application I was about to give up after 13 weeks of waiting, but I used claimyr.com to get through to someone who actually helped. My payment was on hold because my previous employer had contested my original unemployment claim (even though I was eligible). Once they cleared that flag, my payment was processed within a week.

0 coins

This is super helpful! I used to work at a hotel so hopefully I'm in the current batch. How did you know to ask about "payment hold codes"?

0 coins

Cameron Black

•

The agent I spoke with mentioned it. Most regular agents don't know to check that specific screen in their system. You have to specifically ask them to look for hold codes or flags.

0 coins

wait did you say you used claimyr.com? is that the service that gets you through to someone instead of waiting on hold?

0 coins

Cameron Black

•

Yeah, I tried calling for weeks and could never get through. Claimyr waits on hold for you and calls when they get a person. Only way I finally got answers.

0 coins

Anyone else notice how they always announce these programs right before election seasons? 🤔 Just saying...

FACTS! They know exactly what they're doing. Promise money, delay until after voting, then hope people forget about it 💯

0 coins

Let's not make this political. People are just trying to get what they were promised regardless of who's in office.

0 coins

not trying to be political, just pointing out the pattern. happens no matter which party is in charge tbh

0 coins

I work at a hotel in Buffalo and our HR person said several employees have started receiving their payments in the last two weeks. Seems like they're processing them by region maybe? Anyone from NYC area get theirs yet?

0 coins

I'm in Brooklyn and still nothing. Applied in October, approved for $4050 in December.

the amount of misinformation in this thread is wild lmao. I called today and they said the tourism recovery fund is completely separate from regular unemployment and most agents can't even see info about it. They gave me a specific number to call: 888-209-8124 and then press 2, then 5, then ask specifically for the tourism recovery department. still on hold for 2 hours tho so good luck 😂

Connor Murphy

I tried that number/menu and it just disconnected me after an hour on hold...

Lucy Taylor

•

yep, happened to me twice today. the system is a joke.

Try claimyr.com - that's how I finally got through last week. Worth every penny to not waste hours on hold just to get disconnected.

Has anyone received a physical check instead of direct deposit? My approval letter said I'd get a check since they didn't have my banking info, but mail is unreliable in my building so I'm worried I might miss it.

My cousin got a check about 3 weeks ago. It came in a plain white envelope that looked like junk mail so be careful! The return address was just "NYS Department of Labor" with no mention of the tourism program.

0 coins

Thanks for the heads up! I'll keep an eye out for anything from DOL.

0 coins

It's April already. They're never going to pay this out. Just another empty promise from NY unemployment. I've given up honestly.

Don't give up! People are getting them, it's just taking way longer than they said. My roommate just got hers yesterday after waiting since November.

I guess I'll believe it when I see it. Been burned too many times before.

ok weird question but has anyone who got their payment received ANY communication from them before the money appeared? no email, letter, text, anything? I just want to know if I should expect some kind of heads up or if it just materializes in my account one day.

I got mine last week and nope, no communication whatsoever. Just appeared in my account randomly on Tuesday.

Same - no warning, no email, just showed up. Check your accounts daily!

UPDATE: Just got off the phone with DOL (finally)! They told me they're processing about 5,000 payments per week, and there were over 150,000 approved applications. So depending on when you were approved and if there are any issues with your application, it could take up to 6-8 months from approval date. Such a mess.

0 coins

8 MONTHS?!?! That's completely unacceptable. They said 4-6 WEEKS not MONTHS.

0 coins

Typical government efficiency 🙄 promise the moon, deliver a rock, make you wait a year for it.

This whole tourism recovery thing seems sketchy to me. My friend and I both worked at the same hotel, applied the same day, both got approved letters for similar amounts, but she got paid 3 weeks ago and I'm still waiting. Makes no sense.

Caleb Stone

•

Did she apply before you? Even by a day? I heard they're processing in strict order of application date.

Nope, we literally sat next to each other and did it at the same time. The whole system is just random.

I NEED this money so bad. Been checking my account every day for months. Approved for $3950 back in November and still nothing. My landlord is not understanding at all and I'm about to be evicted. NY unemployment system is a complete failure.

Check out the NY rent relief program too while you're waiting. They might be able to help with housing until this payment comes through.

Daniel Price

•

Thanks, already tried that. They're out of funding too. It's all just false hope.

0 coins

Have you tried calling and explaining your situation? I've heard they can expedite in hardship cases. You might need to actually get someone on the phone though - try claimyr.com if you can't get through yourself.

Tip for everyone still waiting: check your spam/junk email folders! My approval letter ended up there, and when I finally found it, it mentioned I needed to verify my identity within 10 days or my payment would be delayed. Never saw it until weeks later. Had to call and get it manually approved after that. Might be why some people are waiting longer than others.

0 coins

Just checked all my folders and found nothing about verification... still just the original approval letter from December. 😩

Zoey Bianchi

•

This happened to me too!! Found a verification email from months ago buried in spam. No wonder my payment was delayed.

0 coins

To everyone still waiting - hang in there! Just got my $4130 today after waiting since October. Was about to give up hope but it finally came through. The website still says "pending" even though the money is already in my account lol. Their system is clearly not updating properly.

0 coins

Congrats!! 🎉 Gives me hope mine might actually come through eventually.

0 coins

That's great news! Did you ever call them or did it just show up?

0 coins

I called a few times but never got through to anyone helpful. It honestly just appeared randomly this morning.

This is why I hate dealing with NY unemployment. Nothing is ever straightforward or on time. At this point I'm more annoyed about the lack of communication than the delay itself. Just tell us what's happening instead of leaving everyone in the dark!
