How to change ny unemployment tourism recovery payment from direct deposit to check?
Just received my tourism recovery benefit approval email this week. In my rush to complete the form, I accidentally selected direct deposit instead of paper check. Problem is, I no longer use that bank account (closed it last month after my identity was stolen). I tried calling the number in the email but it's just an automated system with no option to speak to anyone. Been trying to reach them on the website for 3 days now but keep getting error messages. The payment is supposed to process next week and I'm freaking out that the money will be sent to a closed account and disappear forever. Has anyone gone through this? Is there any way to change my payment method at this point or am I screwed?

You need to call them ASAP. This is not something you can fix online. When I had a similar issue (different program but same department), I had to explain the situation to a rep directly. They will need to manually update your payment preference in their system.

•I've been calling for 2 days straight and can't get through. Just endless hold times or disconnections. Any advice on best time to call?

•Mornings are usually better, right when they open. But honestly the phone lines are a nightmare these days. Have you tried the callback option?

•Didn't even know there was a callback option! Where do I find that?

I had the exact same issue with my tourism recovery payment! After wasting days trying to get through on the regular line, I ended up using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback with an actual human rep on the same day. Talking to an agent got my $ changed to the right payment method before it processed. Saved me weeks of stress and potential lost funds. Check out this video that explains how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? sounds suspicious ngl

•I get the skepticism! I was desperate after 3 days of calling with no luck. The difference is they don't access your account or ask for any personal info - they just navigate the phone system and connect you directly with a rep when they get through. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent who fixed my issue.

•I used it too after seeing someone mention it here. Best $$ I ever spent after being on hold for literally hours over multiple days. The agent I got was able to change my payment method right away.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? the unemployment phone system is literally HELL

•It seriously worked. Would never have gotten through otherwise. The tourism recovery payments are going out soon so you don't have much time to fix this.

Did you try emailing them at the address in the approval notice? That's how I got a response (took 4 days though).

I work with someone who had this EXACT problem. She said if the money gets sent to a closed account, it'll eventually bounce back to NY unemployment and they'll mail you a check. The problem is it takes like 6-8 weeks for that to happen 🤦♀️ So you're better off trying to fix it now.

•Thanks for this info. 6-8 weeks is way too long to wait. I need this money now, not in 2 months!

•This is accurate. I had UI payments going to an old account and it took FOREVER to get sorted out. Call them!!!

The tourism recovery benefit system is totally seperate from regular unemployment btw. You gotta call the specific number for that program, not the main unemployment line. It should be on the bottom of your approval email.

•I tried that number too - it's just a recorded message with no option to speak to anyone 😫

OK so here's what you need to know about fixing payment methods with NY unemployment (especially for the tourism recovery benefit): First, understand that this is a common issue but time-sensitive. Once payment processing begins, it's MUCH harder to redirect. Your options right now: 1) Call repeatedly at 8:00 AM exactly when the lines open. This is when you have the best chance of getting through. Be prepared with your claim ID and other verification info. 2) Try the direct email method: TourismRecovery@labor.ny.gov (use your claim ID in the subject line) 3) Use a service like claimyr.com - I was skeptical but desperate after trying for days, and they actually got me connected to an agent who fixed a similar issue with my claim. They basically navigate the phone system for you and call you once they have an agent on the line. 4) As a last resort, go to your local career center in person. While they primarily handle regular UI, sometimes they can make a note on your account or give you a direct number. If the money does go to a closed account, it will eventually return to NYSDOL, but the waiting period can be 6-8 weeks or longer depending on bank policies. The tourism recovery benefit is a one-time payment so getting it right the first time is crucial. Don't wait - this needs immediate attention!

•Thank you so much for this detailed response! I'm going to try the 8am call tomorrow and if that doesn't work, definitely checking out that claimyr option. Appreciate the help!

•Yes, it's the official contact for tourism recovery benefit questions. It's listed in the FAQ section of the program website.

UPDATE YOUR BANKING INFO ON THE MAIN SITE!!! There should be a section to update payment preferences in your main unemployment account. That's what I did and it worked.

•I tried that first thing! The tourism recovery benefit uses a different system than regular unemployment. The changes in the main UI portal don't affect this special payment 😩

•oh crap sorry didnt realize that! thats so annoying why do they make everything so complicated 🤦♂️

I know this might sound crazy but try hitting 0 repeatedly when you call the automated system. Sometimes it'll kick you to a human after doing that enough times. Worked for me once.

My sister had to use claimyr.com to fix her payment issue. She swears by it now and tells everyone who can't get through to unemployment to try it. Its worth looking into since your situation is time sensitive.

the tourism recovery people are IMPOSSIBLE to reach. I spent 3 days trying before I finally got through. Ridiculous that we even have to go through this to fix their system's problems.

This might be a stupid question, but did you try contacting your old bank? Sometimes even with closed accounts they can still redirect a deposit if you talk to the right person.

•Actually tried this! They said once an account is fully closed (not just dormant), any incoming deposits will be automatically rejected back to the sender.

Not to be that person, but why'd you select the wrong option in the first place? Those forms literally ask you twice to confirm 🙄

•I know, totally my fault. Was rushing through it at work and didn't double check. Definitely regretting that now.

Anyone else notice how the tourism recovery benefit system seems completely separate from the regular unemployment system? Like why can't they just use the same payment info they already have for us? 🤦♀️

•because that would make sense and we can't have that 💯

•LMAO RIGHT?? I think each program is funded differently so they need separate systems. Still stupid tho
