ESD deposit account mysteriously changed - approved but payment delayed

I'm completely freaking out right now. I just got approved for unemployment after waiting FOREVER (got the email at 2am saying I was approved and status changed from pending to paid - finally!). But when I checked the account details, the last 4 digits don't match MY bank account! I never changed my direct deposit info since opening my claim and definitely didn't get any notification about changes. I immediately added my correct account info a few hours after getting the approval email, but I'm worried about what happens now. Will this delay my payment even more? Has anyone dealt with their bank account being mysteriously changed in the system? I'm worried someone hacked my account or ESD made a mistake. Really need this money asap for rent due next week.

This happened to me last month! The system somehow had an old account of mine that I hadn't used in years. When I called ESD (took 3 days to get through btw), they said sometimes the system pulls banking info from previous claims or tax records. When you updated it, did you get a confirmation email?

No confirmation email at all! That's why I'm so nervous. The system accepted my new account info but didn't tell me what happens next. Did your payment get delayed when this happened to you?

This is definitely concerning but not uncommon. When your payment status changed to

Not always true... my cousin had this happen and ESD told her once the money leaves their system they cant trace it. took like 6 weeks to get her $$ back and she had to file some fraud thing

You're right that in some cases it can be more complicated. It depends whether the wrong account was completely unrelated to the claimant or an old/alternate account they once used. ESD handles these situations differently based on whether they suspect actual fraud versus a system error.

This is making me even more worried. I don't recognize the account at all! I've only ever had one checking account my whole life. Could someone have hacked my ESD account?

CALL THEM IMMEDIATELY!!! This happened to me and it took THREE MONTHS to get my money back. The idiots at ESD kept saying \

Oh god, I can't wait 3 months... I've been trying to call all morning but can't get through. It just says high call volume and hangs up on me every time!

I've helped several people with this issue as a WorkSource advisor. Here's what you need to know:\n\n1. When a payment status shows \

Thank you so much! I'm looking for that form right now. Just to make sure I understand - even though my payment status already says \

It depends on timing. If you catch it within 24-48 hours, they can sometimes stop the ACH transfer before it completes. After that, they'll need to issue a completely new payment after verifying the first one can't be recovered. Make sure you also secure your account with a stronger password and enable two-factor authentication if you haven't already, just in case.

I'm definitely going to change my password right now. I had no idea this could even happen. Really appreciate your help!

Man after waiting 8 weeks for my claim I'd be furious! Have you checked if its maybe an old account you used to have? Sometimes ESD pulls info from your previous tax returns or something... happened to my roommate. Good luck getting thru to ESD tho, their phone system is a joke.

Nope, definitely not an old account. I've only had one bank account my entire adult life. I'm starting to think there's something fishy going on.

Try using Claimyr to get through to ESD faster. When this happened to me I was panicking after trying to call for days. Found Claimyr online (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an actual ESD agent in about 25 minutes instead of waiting for days. They have this demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Way better than getting hung up on repeatedly. ESD fixed my direct deposit issue the same day once I got through.

OMG thank you - I've never heard of this before but I'm desperate at this point. Going to check it out right now. Did they make you verify your identity again when you finally got through?

Yes, they'll verify your identity using your claim ID and social security number (last 4 digits), so have all your claim info ready when you call. The agent I spoke with was actually super helpful once I got through and fixed it right away. Just explain exactly what happened with the account numbers.

Just tried it and finally got through to someone! They confirmed my account was updated now but said the payment was already sent to the wrong account. They're starting a payment trace and said I should expect the corrected payment in 7-10 business days. At least I know what's happening now. Thanks again!

Update us on what happens! I'm still dealing with my situation from last month... they keep saying \

Will definitely update! The agent I spoke with seemed confident they could resolve it within 10 business days, but after everything that's happened, I'll believe it when I see the money in my account. Really hope your situation gets resolved soon too.

quick question did u ever access ur esd account from a public computer or shared device? my sisters bf got his account hacked after using a library computer. also check if u got any phishing emails lately that looked like they came from esd might have clicked something?

0 coins

Oh shoot, I did use my cousin's laptop once to check my claim status about two weeks ago. I didn't think anything of it at the time. And now that you mention it, I did get what looked like an ESD email asking me to verify something, but the link didn't work so I ignored it. Maybe I should report this as potential fraud?

0 coins

YES report it as fraud ASAP!! Call the fraud hotline at 800-246-9763 thats different from regular esd number. they take fraud calls quicker and can put a special flag on ur account.

Just called the fraud line and left a message with all my info. They said someone will call back within 48 hours. This is such a nightmare but at least I'm taking all the right steps now. Thanks for the suggestion!
