How long for ESD payment after updating bank info? Claim already filed!

Super frustrated right now! I filed my weekly unemployment claim on Sunday like usual, but then realized I completely forgot to update my bank account information first (just switched banks last week). I immediately went in and updated my direct deposit info, but now I'm worried about when I'll actually get paid. The ESD website is super vague about timelines for this situation. Has anyone else made this mistake? How long did it take for your payment to process after updating banking info mid-week? I'm really counting on this money for rent next week :

Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. Did they at least notify you when it was processed or did you just have to keep checking your account?

I work at a credit union and deal with this all the time. When ESD processes a payment to an account that's been closed or changed, they'll get a return notification. After that happens, they'll redirect the payment to your new account, but there's typically a 3-5 business day delay. If you literally just updated your banking info right after filing, you might be okay - the payment might not have processed yet. Check your payment status on eServices under "UI Payment History" to see if it shows "paid" or "processing" status.

Thanks for the insider info! Just checked and it shows "processing" still. Fingers crossed it goes to the new account directly!

This happened to me but I changed my address not bank info. ESD is soooooooo slow with everything!! Took 2 weeks to get my check in the mail and had to pay late fees for rent. The system is broken IMO.

The timing really depends on when you made the update relative to when your claim was processed. If you updated the bank info before ESD initiated the payment process (which typically happens 1-2 business days after you file your weekly claim), it should go to the new account without delay. If the payment was already in process, it depends on whether your old account is still active. If your old account is still open: The payment will deposit there, and you'll need to transfer it. If your old account is closed: The payment will be returned to ESD, and they'll reissue it to your new account, which typically takes 5-7 business days from when they receive the return notification. My recommendation is to call ESD directly to check the status and possibly expedite the reissuance if needed.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! My old account is still open but I was hoping to avoid having to transfer funds again. I've been trying to call ESD all morning but can't get through - just endless hold times and disconnections.

I had a similar issue with ESD last year. After trying to call for DAYS with no luck, I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an ESD agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. The agent I spoke with was able to see exactly where my payment was in the system and gave me a timeframe for when to expect it. Saved me so much stress wondering when money would show up.

is that service legit?? seems sketchy to use a third party just to talk to ESD...

Yeah it's legit - basically just helps you skip the phone queue. The actual conversation is still directly with an ESD agent, not with any third party. Was worth it for me since I needed to know exactly when I'd get paid.

Something nobody's mentioned - if your old bank account is CLOSED (not just that you switched banks but keeping both accounts), your payment will bounce back to ESD and that's when the real delays happen. In that case, you're looking at minimum 7-10 business days, sometimes longer. ESD has to wait for the failed deposit notification, then manually reprocess the payment to your new account. If your old account is still open though, the payment will likely go there since the system would have already queued it up based on your info at the time you filed the weekly claim. ESD's payment system is separate from their account management system, which is why updates don't take effect immediately.

My old account is still open fortunately, so hopefully it'll just go there. Such a pain though because I was trying to consolidate everything to the new bank! Lesson learned - update bank info BEFORE filing weekly claim.

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know that my payment did end up going to my old account after about 3 business days (normal timing). I've decided to keep both accounts open until I'm no longer on unemployment just to avoid any future headaches. Thanks everyone for your help and advice!

Smart move keeping both accounts open! Glad it worked out without too much delay.
