EDD payment delayed after changing direct deposit info - how long to process?
So I realized I made a huge mistake when setting up my direct deposit for my unemployment benefits. I accidentally typed my bank account number wrong (typed a 6 instead of an 8). As soon as I noticed this, I logged into UI Online and updated my banking information with the correct account number. My payment status says 'paid' as of yesterday, but nothing has shown up in my account yet. Does anyone know how long EDD takes to process banking changes? Will this delay my payment by days or weeks? I'm really stressing because rent is due next week and I was counting on this money.

•Thanks! Did your payment status also show 'paid' while you were waiting? I'm worried it might get sent to the wrong account and then I'll have to go through some complicated process to get it back.

Typically when you update your bank information, EDD will process the change within 1-3 business days. However, if your payment was already processed before you made the change, it might have been sent to the old account information. In that case, it would be rejected by the bank and returned to EDD, who would then either reissue it to your new account or issue a physical check to your mailing address. I'd recommend checking your EDD account daily. If after 5 business days you don't see the money in your new account, call EDD directly to verify where your payment was sent and its current status.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll keep an eye on both accounts and wait 5 days before panicking. I really hope they catch it before sending to the wrong account.

Is the status showing "paid" or "paid - outstanding"?? Those are actually different!! If it says "paid - outstanding" that means there was a problem with your payment being deposited. If it just says "paid" then it MIGHT have gone to the wrong account and you'll need to wait for it to bounce back which can take up to 10 DAYS!!! I learned this the hard way!! 😫

•It just says "paid" without the outstanding part. 10 DAYS??? That's terrifying. I really hope it doesn't take that long.

•That's not how it works anymore. EDD switched from Bank of America cards to Money Network cards a while back, and they don't automatically send those out for direct deposit issues. They'll either reissue electronically or send a paper check now.

When I had a similar issue with my direct deposit info, I found it impossible to get any clear answers online. I eventually used Claimyr to get through to an EDD rep directly (claimyr.com) - they have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The rep I spoke with was able to check exactly where my payment was in the system and confirmed it was being redirected to my new account. Saved me days of anxiety. Much better than refreshing my bank account every hour!

•Thanks for sharing this. If I don't see the money by Monday, I'll definitely check that out. Did they tell you exactly how long the redirect would take?

•Yeah, the rep told me exactly when to expect the deposit - turns out there was an additional verification hold because I had changed my info. Without calling I would've been stressing for no reason. They gave me a specific date to expect the deposit and it showed up exactly when they said.

The EDD system is GARBAGE with updating bank info!!!! I had this happen last year and it took THEM 2 WEEKS to figure it out!!!! And guess what? They NEVER notified me about ANYTHING!!! I had to call them EVERY SINGLE DAY until someone finally helped me!! The worst part is they can clearly see in their system when you update your info but they still make you wait!!!

•This is exactly what I'm afraid of. I can't afford to wait 2 weeks. Did they eventually deposit it to your correct account or did they mail you a check?

Just to add some clarification here: If you changed your bank info AFTER your payment was already processed (status changed to "paid"), then it likely went to the incorrect account first. If the account doesn't exist, it will be rejected and returned to EDD within 2-3 business days. At that point, EDD will either reprocess it to your new account (3-5 additional business days) or mail a paper check (7-10 business days). If the incorrect account number you entered happens to be a valid account belonging to someone else (unlikely but possible), that's a more complicated situation that would require direct contact with EDD.

•I checked with my bank and they said the incorrect account number I entered doesn't exist in their system, so at least it won't go to someone else's account. Sounds like best case scenario is about a week total before I get the money. Thank you for explaining the process!

I work at a bank (not for EDD) and deal with this sort of thing regularly. Here's what happens: if the account number doesn't exist, the ACH transfer will reject automatically and return to sender (EDD). This typically takes 2-3 business days. Once EDD receives the rejected payment, they'll process it to your updated bank info, which takes another 2-3 business days. So you're looking at about 4-6 business days total from when the payment was first sent.

•Thats IF the EDD system even notices the rejected payment!!! Sometimes it gets stuck in their system and you have to call and MAKE them fix it!!! Don't just assume they'll handle it properly!!!

•Thank you for the insight from a banking perspective! That's reassuring to know there's an automatic process for this. I'll give it until next Wednesday and then try to contact EDD if nothing shows up.

•I never received a Money Network card since I set up direct deposit from the beginning. This is my first payment issue.

Just wanted to update you - I checked with a friend who works as an EDD contractor. She said that if you update your bank info and the status already says "paid," you should see the deposit within 7-10 business days total (including the time for the rejected payment to be returned and reprocessed). If you don't see it by then, definitely call EDD directly. Hope this helps ease your mind a bit!

•Thanks for checking with your friend! 7-10 days is tight for my rent, but at least I have a timeframe now. Really appreciate everyone's help here!

Hey Daniel! I went through this exact same situation about 6 months ago. The good news is that since your bank confirmed the incorrect account number doesn't exist, you won't have to worry about your money going to someone else. In my case, it took exactly 5 business days from when the status showed "paid" to when I actually received the money in my correct account. The payment bounced back to EDD after 2 days, and then they reprocessed it to my updated bank info which took another 3 days. One thing that helped me was setting up account alerts with my bank so I'd get a text the moment any deposit hit my account - saved me from constantly checking! Also, if you're really stressed about rent, you might want to reach out to your landlord now and explain the situation. Most are understanding about unemployment payment delays, especially if you give them a heads up. Keep us posted on how it goes!

•Thank you so much Javier! This is exactly what I needed to hear. 5 days total sounds much more manageable than some of the horror stories I was reading. I'll definitely set up those account alerts - great idea! And you're right about reaching out to my landlord proactively. I'll give them a call tomorrow to explain the situation. Really appreciate you sharing your specific timeline, it helps a lot to know what to expect!

I had a very similar experience last year! Changed my bank info after noticing a typo in my account number, and the payment status showed "paid" but nothing appeared in my account. What ended up happening was exactly what others described - the payment bounced back after 3 business days since the account didn't exist, then EDD automatically reprocessed it to my correct account info. Total time was 6 business days from when it first showed "paid." The key thing is to NOT panic and start calling EDD immediately - give the automatic system time to work first. I made the mistake of calling on day 2 and wasted hours on hold for nothing. The automated bounce-back process actually works pretty well. Since you confirmed with your bank that the wrong account number doesn't exist, you're in the same boat I was in. Should definitely see your money within the next week. Just keep checking both your old and new account daily, and maybe call your landlord to give them a heads up about the potential delay.

•Thanks Diego! It's really reassuring to hear from multiple people who went through the exact same thing. 6 days sounds reasonable and I appreciate the advice about not calling EDD too early - I was definitely tempted to start calling today but I'll wait it out. Good point about checking both accounts too, just in case something weird happens. This community has been so helpful, I was really stressing about this but now I feel much better about the timeline. Will definitely update everyone once it resolves!

Just wanted to chime in as someone who's been through this exact situation twice! The first time I panicked and called EDD on day 2, which was pointless since the automated system was already handling it. The second time I just waited it out and it resolved perfectly in 5 business days. Since your bank confirmed that account number doesn't exist, you're actually in the best possible scenario - no risk of it going to someone else's account. The ACH will automatically reject and bounce back to EDD, then they'll reprocess to your correct info. Pro tip: download your bank's mobile app if you haven't already and turn on push notifications for deposits. That way you'll know the second it hits without obsessively checking your balance! Also agree with others about calling your landlord now - most are pretty understanding about unemployment delays if you give them advance notice. You should be good within a week tops. Keep us updated!

•Thanks Paolo! I really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences - it's making this so much less stressful. I already downloaded my bank app and set up the notifications like you suggested. Also called my landlord this morning and explained the situation, and they were totally understanding about a potential week delay. It's such a relief to know that multiple people have been through this exact scenario and it worked out fine. I'll definitely keep everyone posted on how it goes. This community has been amazing!

Hey Daniel! I went through this exact same thing about 3 months ago - also accidentally put the wrong account number and didn't catch it until after my payment showed "paid." Since your bank confirmed that account number doesn't exist, you're actually in a good spot. The payment will bounce back automatically within 2-3 business days, then EDD will reprocess it to your corrected account info. In my case, the whole process took 6 business days from when it first showed "paid" to when I actually got the money. One thing that really helped my stress level was calling my landlord right away to explain the situation. Most landlords are pretty understanding about unemployment payment delays, especially when you give them advance notice and a realistic timeline. Since you're looking at about a week total, you might want to give them a heads up now. Also, definitely set up mobile banking alerts if you haven't already - saved me from checking my account balance every hour! The money will show up, just takes a bit longer when there's a bank info issue. Keep us posted on how it goes!

•Thank you Amara! It's so helpful to hear from someone who went through this exact same situation recently. 6 business days seems to be the consistent timeline everyone is mentioning, which gives me a lot of peace of mind. I already took your advice and called my landlord this morning - they were totally understanding and said a week delay wouldn't be a problem. I also set up those mobile banking alerts like you suggested. This whole thread has been such a lifesaver, I was really panicking when I first posted but now I feel so much better knowing this is a common issue with a predictable resolution. Will definitely update everyone once it goes through!

Just wanted to add my experience to help ease your mind! I had almost the identical situation about 8 months ago - wrong account number, payment showing "paid" but no money in my account. Since you confirmed with your bank that the incorrect account doesn't exist, you're definitely in the clear for it not going to someone else. In my case, it took exactly 5 business days total. The payment bounced back to EDD after 2 days, then they automatically reprocessed it to my updated account info which took another 3 days. No phone calls needed, no additional paperwork - the system handled it all automatically. The hardest part was just the waiting and not knowing! But based on everyone's experiences here, you should see your money by early next week. Hang in there!

•Thank you Carmen! It's so reassuring to hear that your timeline was exactly 5 business days - that matches what several others have shared. You're absolutely right that the waiting and not knowing is the hardest part, but this thread has really helped calm my nerves. Based on everyone's experiences, it sounds like the automated system actually works pretty well for this type of issue. I'm feeling much more confident now that I'll see the money by early next week. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience!

I went through something very similar about a year ago! I had entered the wrong routing number initially and caught it right after my payment showed "paid." The anxiety was real because I needed that money for bills. What ended up happening was the payment bounced back to EDD after about 3 business days since the routing number was invalid, and then they automatically sent it to my corrected account info. The whole process took about a week from start to finish. One thing I learned is that EDD's system actually handles these bank info errors pretty automatically when the account doesn't exist - no need for manual intervention on their end. Since you confirmed with your bank that the wrong account number doesn't exist, you should be in good shape. The waiting is definitely nerve-wracking, but based on what I see from everyone else's experiences here, you should have your money within the next few business days. Hang in there!
