EDD direct deposit payment delay - normal Wednesday deposit not showing up

I've been receiving my unemployment benefits through the EDD Money Network card for the past few months, and payments always hit my card on Wednesdays like clockwork. Last week I finally set up direct deposit to my checking account (took forever to get that BofA account info all entered correctly!). My certification was processed and shows 'paid' in UI Online as of Monday, but it's now Thursday and still nothing in my bank account. My last payment to the card was on March 13th. Does switching to direct deposit cause some kind of delay for the first payment? Anyone else experience this? I'm getting really anxious because rent is due soon and I was counting on this money.

Thank you! That's a relief to hear. So I should probably see it by tomorrow then?

The first direct deposit payment typically takes 1-2 business days longer than subsequent ones. This is because EDD needs to verify your banking information during the initial setup. When you check your payment history in UI Online, it should show 'paid' status with the payment type as 'direct deposit' rather than 'card.' If it's been more than 3 business days since the 'paid' status appeared, I'd suggest calling EDD to confirm everything was processed correctly with your banking information.

Not always true!! Mine took almost SIX days the first time but then always came exactly on time after that. They never mentioned that would happen when I switched from the card. SO ANNOYING!

I'm having the EXACT same issue right now!!! Been on the money network card for months and just switched to direct deposit last week. My payment shows PAID in the system since Tuesday but my bank account is still empty. Did yours eventually show up? I'm freaking out because I have automatic payments scheduled for tomorrow and I NEED this money to clear!!

It actually just hit my account this morning! So it took about 3.5 business days total from when it showed 'paid' in the system. Hopefully yours comes through today or tomorrow at the latest.

I had a similar issue when I switched to direct deposit last year. The first payment took 4 business days to arrive after showing 'paid' in the system. Every payment after that arrived within 1-2 business days like clockwork. One thing to check - make sure the account number and routing number you entered are 100% correct. I've seen people who had their payments delayed for weeks because they transposed digits. You can verify this information in your UI Online account under 'Payment Methods'.

I double checked and all my banking info looks correct in the system. It's definitely stressful when you're waiting for that first direct deposit! I wish the EDD website would mention this delay somewhere prominent so people could plan accordingly.

try reaching EDD to check on the status. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through the phone maze and spoke to a rep in under 20 minutes who confirmed my direct deposit was processing but had a verification hold. they immediately released it! check out their video demo if you're interested: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km - saved me days of waiting and anxiety!

Seconding this recommendation. EDD's system often places a temporary hold on the first direct deposit for security reasons. A quick call can usually get it released faster. It's worth calling especially if it's been more than 3 business days.

its probably fine money always takes longer when you change how u get it... bank stuff is slow my guy

This is why I REFUSE to switch to direct deposit!!! The Money Network card might not be perfect but at least I know EXACTLY when my money will be there. Friends who use direct deposit are always complaining about random delays. No thanks, I'll stick with what works!!!

While the initial setup might cause a slight delay, direct deposit is actually more reliable long-term. The Money Network card system has experienced several widespread outages over the past year. Additionally, direct deposit provides better protection against fraud. Each method has pros and cons, but for most people, the minor initial delay is worth the long-term benefits of direct deposit.

Wait I'm confused... is direct deposit different from the EDD debit card?? I thought the Money Network WAS direct deposit! Do I need to set something else up to get my money faster??

No, the Money Network card is a prepaid debit card that EDD loads your benefits onto. Direct deposit means the money goes straight into your personal checking or savings account at your bank. They're two different payment methods. You can choose which one you prefer in your UI Online account under 'Payment Methods'.

Update: My payment finally showed up in my account this morning! So it took about 3-4 business days from when it showed 'paid' in the system. Definitely longer than the card payments used to take. Thanks everyone for the help and reassurance!

Great news! And yes, this is normal for the first direct deposit. Your future payments should arrive more quickly now that your banking information is verified in their system. Typically, direct deposits will be in your account within 1-2 business days after certification once everything is established.
