Will updating my direct deposit info cause payment delays with ESD?
I'm currently receiving unemployment benefits and need to change my direct deposit to a different bank account. With all the claim processing delays I've been hearing about, I'm worried this simple update might trigger some kind of review or payment hold. Does anyone know if changing payment details causes any payment delays or requires special approval from ESD? I'm already living on a tight budget and absolutely cannot afford to miss even one week of payments. ESD seems to be flagging everything for review these days, and I'm nervous about touching anything in my account settings.

I changed my direct deposit info back in January and it was no big deal. No delays whatsoever. The next payment just went to the new account. But that was before all this new scrutiny they're doing now. Honestly ESD has gotten so unpredictable lately with what triggers their "security reviews" or whatever they're calling them. They put my neighbor's claim on hold for THREE WEEKS because she moved apartments!

•THREE WEEKS? That's exactly what I'm afraid of. I can't go that long without a payment. Was your neighbor able to do anything to speed up the review?

I work at WorkSource and help people with ESD issues regularly. Changing your direct deposit information by itself shouldn't cause any payment delays. The system processes this as a simple account update, not as a claim modification that requires adjudication. However, there are a few important things to know: 1. The change typically takes effect on the next payment cycle 2. Double-check all account numbers carefully - errors can cause significant delays 3. If you're switching from debit card to direct deposit (or vice versa), that can sometimes trigger additional verification If you're worried, make the change immediately after receiving a payment so you have maximum time before the next payment is processed.

•Thank you SO MUCH for this detailed information! I'm just switching from one bank account to another, not changing the method. I'll make the change right after my next payment comes in. Really appreciate the expert advice!

my cousin changed her bank info last month and ESD froze everything!!! took like 10 days to fix and she couldnt get anyone on the phone. not trying 2 scare u but just be careful

•This isn't quite accurate. ESD doesn't automatically freeze accounts for changing direct deposit information. Your cousin's claim likely had other issues that triggered a review coincidentally at the same time. I've helped dozens of people navigate the ESD system, and changing bank details is generally seamless unless there are other pending issues with the claim.

I tried calling ESD about a payment method change last week and spent FOUR HOURS on hold before getting disconnected. Then tried again the next day and same thing. Their phone system is completely broken right now! If anyone needs to actually talk to an ESD agent, I found this service called Claimyr that got me through in about 20 minutes. They have this system that keeps dialing until it gets through and then calls you when it connects. Saved me hours of frustration. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Worth every penny because I finally got my issue resolved.

•Is that service legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible ESD is to reach these days.

•Totally legit. I was skeptical too but was desperate after wasting an entire day on hold. The service basically automates the calling process and navigates the phone tree for you. When they get a real person, they connect you. Worked exactly as advertised.

NOTHING about ESD is simple anymore!!! I updated my mailing address in February (didn't even change payment info) and they put me in adjudication hell for 5 weeks claiming it was a "verification of identity" issue. Meanwhile rent was due and I had to borrow money from family. By the time they fixed it I was almost evicted. The whole system is BROKEN!!!

•I'm sorry you had that experience. Identity verification is a separate issue that can be triggered by address changes due to fraud prevention measures. Direct deposit changes don't typically trigger the same level of scrutiny as they're handled by a different verification process. The system isn't perfect, but they're trying to balance payment speed with necessary fraud prevention.

•"Necessary fraud prevention" that punishes legitimate claimants! I filled out EVERY form they asked for and still waited over a month. They should at least have enough staff to review these things quickly.

Here's what you need to know about updating payment details with ESD in 2025: 1. Bank account changes specifically are generally processed within 2-3 business days without delaying payments if there are no other issues with your claim. 2. The online eServices portal shows a confirmation message when the change is successfully processed. Take a screenshot of this confirmation. 3. If you make the change less than 48 hours before your payment is scheduled to process, it might go to your old account for that cycle. 4. Changes from direct deposit to debit card (or vice versa) can trigger additional verification steps, but just changing from one bank account to another usually doesn't. For maximum safety, make the change right after receiving a payment so you have a full week before the next payment processes.

•Thank you for these details! I'll definitely take a screenshot of the confirmation. Good tip about doing it right after a payment - that makes a lot of sense to give the system time to process the change.

Has anyone else noticed that ESD seems to be flagging literally EVERYTHING for review lately? My coworker got flagged for "inconsistent work search activities" because he applied for jobs in two different industries. Like, hello? People need work wherever they can find it!

•omg YES!! they questioned me because i reported 4 job search activities one week instead of the required 3. like im doing EXTRA and they still gave me problems?? make it make sense lol

Update: I changed my direct deposit info yesterday and it went through fine! The system showed a confirmation message right away, and I took a screenshot like someone suggested. Also called ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned above and the agent confirmed the change was processed and my next payment should go to the new account without any delays. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for the advice!
