Will changing my NY unemployment direct deposit bank account affect this week's payment?
I'm currently receiving NY unemployment benefits and need to change the bank account for my direct deposit. I'm supposed to get a payment this week (already certified on Sunday), but I'm worried that if I update my banking info now, it might mess up this week's payment or delay it. Has anyone changed their direct deposit info mid-claim? Should I wait until after this week's payment posts, or is it safe to change it now without affecting anything?

I changed my bank account last year when I switched from Chase to Capital One. I made sure to do it RIGHT AFTER my weekly payment posted. I wouldn't risk changing it before your payment processes - it can cause delays of 3-5 business days while they verify the new account. When I did mine, the next payment went through fine to my new bank with no problems. Just wait until you see this week's payment clear first.

•Thanks for the advice! That makes sense. I'll just wait until I see this week's payment hit my current account before making any changes.

•Yikes! Definitely don't want that to happen. I'll hold off on making any changes until after I get paid.

I work with unemployment claims professionally, and here's what you need to know: Any changes to direct deposit information after you've certified but before the payment processes can cause your payment to be delayed or even rejected. The NY system processes the payments to the bank account that was on file at the time of certification. The safest approach is: 1. Wait for this week's payment to clear your current account 2. Change your direct deposit information immediately after 3. Make sure your new banking information is completely accurate Changing banking information typically causes a verification period of 1-3 business days, so don't be alarmed if your next payment takes slightly longer. Also, some banks have different processing times, so keep that in mind as well.

•Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! This is exactly what I needed to know. I'll definitely wait until after this week's payment clears.

•Wait but what if I already changed it yesterday and I certified on Sunday?? Will my money just disappear?? I'm freaking out now because I NEED that money for rent this week! Can I change it back to my old account or is it too late???

•That's good to hear! Did you change it before or after certification though?

I HATE how stressful this whole process is!!! You have to worry about EVERY little change potentially messing up your payments. The system should be more flexible. Why can't they just make it user friendly for once???

•In this case, it's actually a security feature. The system locks in payment details at certification to prevent fraud. While it can be frustrating, it protects your benefits from potential theft.

The specific timing matters a lot. NY unemployment processes payments in batches: 1. If you certified on Sunday and change your bank details on Monday or Tuesday, it will likely affect this week's payment 2. If you wait until Wednesday or Thursday to change bank details, your payment is probably already in process to your old account If you're having trouble reaching someone at NYSDOL to ask about this (their phone lines are notoriously busy), I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). They helped me get through to an agent within 30 minutes when I had a similar banking issue. They have a good video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•That timing breakdown is super helpful. Since it's already Tuesday, I'll definitely wait. And thanks for the Claimyr tip - I'll check that out if I need to speak with an agent.

I'm having the EXACT SAME WORRY right now!!! I'm switching from my Wells Fargo account to my credit union and I'm terrified about messing up my payments. I've been staring at the screen for 20 minutes trying to decide if I should click update or not. This thread is a sign I should wait lol

•Definitely wait! Peace of mind is worth more than the minor convenience of updating it now.

•This is extremely rare but can happen if the payment processing overlaps with account changes in a specific way. If this ever happens, contact NYSDOL immediately - attempting to keep both payments is considered fraud and can result in penalties.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice! I'm going to wait until after this week's payment posts to my current account before making any changes. It's not worth risking a delay. I'll update here if I run into any issues with the process in case it helps someone else.

•Good call! The unemployment system seems designed to punish any small mistake. Better safe than sorry!
