Worried about changing direct deposit info on active ESD claim - will it cause payment delays?

Hey everyone! I'm in the process of switching from Chase to BECU and need to update my direct deposit info for my unemployment payments. Has anyone changed their banking info mid-claim recently? I'm really nervous about doing this because I can't afford any payment delays right now. My rent is due next week and I'm cutting it close this month. The ESD website makes it seem simple enough, but we all know how things can unexpectedly go wrong with the system. Just want to make sure I won't accidentally trigger some kind of review or hold on my claim. Any experiences or advice would be super appreciated!

I changed mine back in February when Capital One locked my account for suspicious activity (thanks for that anxiety attack!). It was surprisingly simple - just updated it in the payment section on eServices. My payment still came on time that week with no issues. Just make sure you triple-check those account numbers before submitting!

Oh that's so relieving to hear! Did you have to wait for any kind of verification or approval after you submitted the new info? Or did it just accept the change immediately?

Changed mine last year and it triggered a 2-week hold while they "verified" my new banking details. The website DOESN'T warn you about this! I'd recommend keeping both accounts open until you confirm the new one is working. Also, do it right after getting a payment so you have maximum time before the next one is due.

THIS HAPPENED TO ME TOO!!! ESD messed up my whole life for almost a month with their "verification" nonsense. They never even told me there was a problem until I called them 50 times!!!

Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of! I can't afford a 2-week hold right now. Did you have to call them to fix it or did it just eventually start working?

I actually just did this last month! First, make sure you enter the routing and account number correctly - I accidentally transposed digits the first time. But otherwise, it went fine. My payment showed up in the new account with no delays. BUT - important tip: wait until AFTER your weekly payment processes before making the change. That way if there are any issues, you have a full week to resolve them before your next payment is due.

So from working with ESD claims for a while, I can tell you changing direct deposit info is usually fine, but there are some potential issues to be aware of: 1. Some people do get flagged for verification, especially if you've had other recent account changes or identity verification issues 2. The system updates overnight, not instantly, so don't expect immediate confirmation 3. Make sure your new account is fully set up and able to receive ACH deposits before updating ESD 4. Keep your old account open for at least 2 payment cycles if possible 5. If you're really worried about timing with rent, consider changing it right after receiving this week's payment The good news is that even if there's an issue, they can always issue a paper check as backup.

Thank you for such detailed info! I didn't even think about keeping my old account open, but that makes total sense. I'll definitely do that. I've never had any identity verification issues before, so hopefully that reduces my chances of getting flagged.

my cousin tried to change his bank info and somehow got his account locked for 3 weeks and had to go into a worksource office to fix it. not saying itll happen to you but just be careful

Ugh, that sounds awful. Did he ever find out what caused the problem? Was it just random or did he do something specific that triggered it?

After trying for DAYS to get through to ESD about a different issue (my claim was stuck in adjudication), I finally used Claimyr to reach an agent. It cost money but was worth it when I had urgent questions that needed answers. You can check out their video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 to see how it works. If you're worried about the direct deposit change causing issues, might be worth having this as a backup plan to actually reach someone quickly if something goes wrong. Their site is claimyr.com - way better than spending hours on hold or getting hung up on repeatedly.

I've heard about this service but never tried it. Did they actually get you through to a real person? How long did it take?

Yes, got me through to an actual ESD agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending all day getting disconnected. The agent was able to see exactly what was happening with my claim and fixed the issue while I was on the phone.

Quick update for everyone: ESD has actually improved their direct deposit change process in 2025. The system now sends you a confirmation email when you update banking info, and there's a new verification page that shows your last 4 digits of both the old and new accounts for security. The standard processing time is 2-3 business days for the change to fully take effect, so plan accordingly. And as others have mentioned, timing it between payment cycles is always safest.

Oh, that's really helpful to know about the confirmation email! At least I'll have some documentation if anything goes wrong. I think I'll wait until right after this week's payment posts and then make the change. Thanks everyone for all your advice!

I swear ESD's system is designed to make everything as difficult as possible! Had to change my direct deposit last year and somehow ended up with TWO payments - one to each account! Then they hit me with an overpayment notice six months later. Still fighting it...

Wait, they made a mistake and paid you twice, then demanded the money back 6 MONTHS later? That's ridiculous! Have you filed an appeal?

Yeah, I'm in the appeals process now. They take forever to review anything. Just warning everyone to document EVERYTHING when you change any account details.

Just to follow up on what everyone's saying - I think the key is timing. Don't make any changes to your direct deposit info on the day before or the day of your regular payment processing. The system needs time to update, and if you try to change things while a payment is being processed, that's when problems seem to happen. Good luck!

Thanks! My payments usually process on Tuesdays, so maybe I'll make the change on Wednesday or Thursday to be safe. Appreciate all the advice!
