Switching to direct deposit - How long for ESD to process and will it delay my next week's UI payment?
I'm currently getting my unemployment benefits on the ESD debit card but want to switch to direct deposit. If I submit the change request through eServices today (Friday), does anyone know how long it takes for ESD to approve the direct deposit info? I'm especially worried about next week's payment - will changing payment methods now cause a delay in my regular payment? I really can't afford to miss even one week. Has anyone recently changed their payment method and can share their experience? Thanks!

I changed to direct deposit back in January and it took about 4-5 business days to process. Your next payment might still go to the debit card if you submit on a Friday, since they typically process these changes in batches. I'd recommend doing it right after submitting your weekly claim to minimize any potential delays.

•Thanks! So you think if I do it today, next Thursday's payment might still go to my debit card? I'm fine with that as long as I still get paid on time.

•Same here! My change happened super fast too - like the very next payment went to my bank account. I think it depends on when in the week you do it.

BE CAREFUL!!! I did this last month and they MESSED UP my payment! Had to wait TWO EXTRA WEEKS to get my money because they said there was a "verification issue" with my bank info even though I triple-checked everything!!! The ESD system is TERRIBLE about processing these changes!!! I nearly got evicted waiting for them to fix it!!

•This is so weird... people have such different experiences with the same ESD system. Makes me think it's less about the system and more about random luck on which employee processes your stuff.

The official ESD policy is that payment method changes take 3-5 business days to process. Since you're submitting on a Friday, the process won't start until Monday, meaning it likely won't complete until Thursday or Friday next week. Your next payment will probably still go to your debit card, with the following payment going to direct deposit. A few tips to avoid issues: 1. Enter your bank info exactly as it appears on your bank statements 2. Double-check the routing and account numbers 3. Make sure your name on the ESD account matches your bank account name 4. If you've frozen your credit, temporarily unfreeze it as ESD sometimes does a soft credit check to verify bank details

•This is super helpful, thank you! I didn't know about the name matching or the credit freeze issues. I'll make sure everything matches exactly.

I've had to call ESD several times about payment method changes because their online system kept giving me errors. If you run into any issues or want to make sure it processes correctly, try using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an ESD agent quickly. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 I used it when my direct deposit change wasn't going through, and the agent was able to manually update my payment method on the spot. Saved me weeks of waiting and stress!

•Yes, it definitely works! I was skeptical too but I got through to an agent in about 15 minutes. The ESD agent I spoke with was able to verify my direct deposit info right away and confirm it was set up correctly in their system.

Random question but related - does anyone know if you can have both options active at the same time? Like could I keep my debit card AND add direct deposit, then choose which one I want each week? My work situation is complicated and sometimes I need money in different accounts.

•No, unfortunately ESD only allows one payment method to be active at a time. You'd need to switch between methods each time you want to change where your payment goes, and each switch would be subject to that 3-5 business day processing time.

Update: I went ahead and submitted the change to direct deposit yesterday. The system accepted my bank info without any errors, so that's a good sign. I'll report back next week to let everyone know if my payment arrives on time and which method it used. Thanks for all the advice!

•Great! Yes, please let us know how it goes. This information will be helpful for others in the same situation.

Final update: My payment this week still went to my debit card as many of you predicted. I checked my ESD account and it shows the direct deposit is now active, so next week's payment should go to my bank account. No delays at all with the payment, which was a relief!
