EDD Money Network card vs switching to direct deposit - will it cause payment delays?
So I requested a Money Network debit card for my unemployment payments about 3 weeks ago but still haven't received anything in the mail. I'm getting nervous because I really need access to these funds soon. I'm thinking about just logging into UI Online and changing to direct deposit instead since I already have my bank account set up for other things. But now I'm worried - if I switch payment methods while the card is supposedly still being processed, will it mess everything up? Will I lose the payments that were supposed to go on the card? Or will EDD just redirect everything to my bank account? Has anyone made this switch before without issues? I've been certifying regularly and all my weeks show as 'paid' in the system, but I have no way to actually access the money yet. Getting really stressed about bills piling up!

You should be fine switching to direct deposit. I did this last year when my Money Network card got lost in the mail. The system will just redirect any pending payments to whatever payment method is currently active on your account. Any payments already sent to the card will stay with the card (you'll eventually get it), but all future payments will go to your bank directly. Just make sure you double-check your banking info before submitting. One wrong digit and your payment could get delayed even more!

•Thanks for the info! Did you have to do anything special after changing to direct deposit or did the system handle everything automatically? And how long did it take for direct deposit to start working after you made the change?

DONT DO IT!!!! I tried switching payment methods in the middle of my claim last month and it totally screwed everything up!!! My payments got stuck in some weird processing limbo for almost 2 weeks and I had to call EDD like 50 times to get it sorted out. The stupid automated system kept saying my payments were issued but NOTHING was showing up in my account. So frustrating!!!

•I think what happened in your case might be unusual. The EDD system should handle payment method changes without major issues, but there can sometimes be a processing delay during the transition period. The most important thing is to make sure your banking information is entered correctly if switching to direct deposit, as errors here can cause significant delays.

I've been through this exact situation before and wanted to share what I learned after dealing with EDD's payment systems for months. Switching to direct deposit is actually a smart move if you haven't received your Money Network card yet. Here's what happens: Any payments that were already processed and sent to the Money Network card will still be on that card when it eventually arrives. But once you update your payment preference to direct deposit, all NEW payments will go directly to your bank account. The switch typically takes 1-3 business days to process in their system. Just be aware that if you have a payment that's currently in processing limbo when you make the switch, that specific payment might take a bit longer to sort out. One tip though - if you're struggling to reach EDD to check on the status of your payments or the card, I discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to a real EDD representative after weeks of failed calling attempts. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. Definitely worth it when you're in a tough spot and need to talk to someone at EDD directly.

Just wanted to add something nobody mentioned yet - if you do end up getting the Money Network card later AND you've switched to direct deposit, don't just throw the card away. Any payments that were processed before you made the switch will still be on that card! My roommate made this mistake and lost about $900 because he thought all his money would automatically transfer to his bank account when he switched methods. You'll have to withdraw/transfer any funds that ended up on the card separately.

•Oh wow, that's really good to know! I definitely would have assumed any pending payments would automatically go to whatever method was currently active. I'll make sure to hang onto the card if/when it finally shows up. Thanks for the heads up!

To give you a precise answer based on EDD procedures: 1. You can safely switch to direct deposit even if you've requested a Money Network card. 2. Payments follow this timeline: - Certification → Processing (24-48 hours) → Payment issued - Once a payment is ISSUED, it goes to whatever payment method was active at that exact moment 3. When you switch payment methods: - Any payments already issued to the Money Network card will remain there - Any payments not yet issued will go to your bank account via direct deposit 4. The direct deposit setup typically takes 1-3 business days to become active in their system 5. You can view your payment history in UI Online to see which payments have been issued and to which payment method As others mentioned, double-check your banking information carefully. Nearly 80% of payment delays after switching to direct deposit are due to incorrect account information.

•This is super helpful, thank you! I just logged in and switched to direct deposit. Made triple sure my account info was correct. It says my payment preference has been updated successfully, so hopefully this will be smoother sailing from here. I'll keep an eye on my UI Online account to track where each payment ends up.
