Direct deposit update after Money Network card was already issued - will my funds transfer?
Hi everyone! So I filed my unemployment claim about 2 weeks ago and just saw that my payments switched to 'paid' status yesterday (yay!). EDD automatically set me up with a Money Network debit card which I understand is supposed to be coming in the mail with my first payment loaded onto it. The thing is, I've been hearing about all these fraud issues with the debit cards being stolen from mailboxes, so this morning I went ahead and set up direct deposit in my UI Online account. Now I'm confused - will the money that was already processed and supposedly loaded onto that card automatically transfer to my bank account instead? Or do I still need to wait for the physical card to arrive, then transfer the money myself? Has anyone done this before? This is my first time on unemployment and timing is really tight with rent due next week.

ur gonna still need that card. the direct deposit only affects future payments not ones already processed. they send those cards priority mail usually takes like 5-7 days

•Thanks for the quick response! That's what I was afraid of... I really need that money ASAP. Do you know if there's any way to speed up getting the card?

You definitely still need to wait for the Money Network card to arrive. Any payments that were already processed before you set up direct deposit will be on that card. Only payments processed AFTER your direct deposit setup will go to your bank account. Once you get the card, you can transfer the funds to your bank through the Money Network mobile app or website. The initial card usually arrives 7-10 business days after your first payment shows as 'paid' in the system. If you don't receive it within that timeframe, you can call Money Network directly at 1-866-682-6856 to check status or request a replacement.

•Thank you for the detailed info! I'll wait a few more days before panicking. Is there any way to track the card delivery?

I just went through this exact thing last month! The money that's already been processed will definitely still come on the card. The direct deposit will only apply to future payments. What's really annoying is that even though my status changed to paid on a Monday, they didn't actually mail the card until Thursday of that week. So frustrating!

•Ugh that's exactly what I'm worried about. How long did it take for your card to arrive after they mailed it?

I've been dealing with this exact issue recently. After my status changed to paid, I waited almost TWO WEEKS for that stupid Money Network card! EDD tells you they mail it right away but that's complete BS. And when I called Money Network they basically said "we'll send it when we send it" 🙄 No way to track it either. The system is basically designed to make everything as difficult as possible. Welcome to the EDD nightmare.

To add some clarity: payments already processed to the Money Network card will not automatically transfer to your bank account. Direct deposit settings only affect future payments. For the immediate situation: 1. Your first payment will arrive on the Money Network card 2. Standard delivery is 7-10 business days from payment date 3. Once you receive the card, you must activate it through Money Network 4. You can then transfer funds to your bank account through their app/website 5. Future payments after your direct deposit setup will go directly to your bank If you need to reach EDD urgently about expediting the card, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an EDD representative quickly. They have a service that helps you bypass the busy signals and long wait times. I used it recently and got through in under 20 minutes instead of spending days trying to get through. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

•Thank you for breaking this down so clearly! I might try Claimyr if my card doesn't show up by next week. Do you know if EDD representatives can actually expedite the card delivery if I reach them?

I don't think anyone mentioned this yet but BE CAREFUL when the card comes!!! It looks like junk mail - plain white envelope with very little EDD markings. I almost threw mine away thinking it was credit card spam! Make sure you're checking ALL your mail carefully.

•OMG this is so true! Mine came in a super plain envelope that looked like credit card junk mail. The return address is from Money Network in South Dakota, not from EDD in California!

Update: My card finally arrived today! For anyone who finds this thread later - it took exactly 8 business days after my payment status changed to 'paid'. The envelope really does look like junk mail, so check everything carefully. I was able to activate it immediately and transfer the funds to my bank account through the Money Network app. Future payments should go straight to my bank now that I've set up direct deposit. Thanks everyone for your help!

Glad to hear you got your card! Just a quick tip for transferring funds - the Money Network app sometimes limits how much you can transfer at once depending on your bank. If you're having trouble moving the full amount, try doing it through their website instead or call their customer service. And yes, all your future payments should now go directly to your bank account through direct deposit.

This is such helpful information for anyone going through this process! I'm in a similar situation where I'm waiting for my Money Network card after setting up direct deposit too late. One thing I learned from calling EDD (after many attempts) is that they can't actually expedite the Money Network card delivery - that's handled entirely by a third-party company. The EDD rep told me the only thing they can do is confirm that the payment was processed and sent to Money Network for card loading. So unfortunately we're all at the mercy of their standard 7-10 business day delivery window. But it's good to know that future payments will go straight to our bank accounts once direct deposit kicks in!

•Thanks for sharing that info about EDD not being able to expedite the card! That's really frustrating but good to know so I don't waste time calling them about it. I'm on day 6 of waiting for my card now and getting pretty anxious, but it sounds like 7-10 business days is pretty standard. At least knowing that future payments will go directly to my bank makes this whole process feel less stressful for the long term.

Just wanted to add something that might help others in this situation - if you're really strapped for cash while waiting for the Money Network card, you might want to check if your local food banks or community assistance programs can help bridge the gap. I know it's not ideal, but when I was waiting for my card last year and rent was due, I found some local resources that helped with groceries and even had emergency rental assistance programs. It's worth looking into while you're waiting for that card to arrive. Also, if you have any bills due soon, call the companies and explain your situation - many have hardship programs or will work with you on payment plans. The unemployment system is frustratingly slow, but there are other resources out there to help get you through this waiting period.

•This is really thoughtful advice! I hadn't even considered looking into community resources while waiting for the card. Do you happen to know if there are any specific websites or phone numbers that help you find these local assistance programs? I'm in the Bay Area and could really use some help with groceries this week while I wait for my Money Network card to arrive.
