Money Network card delivery timing - first EDD payment posted yesterday but can't access funds

Just had my first UI payment ($598) deposited into my EDD account yesterday (3/17), which happened to be my certification day. Since this payment was after the 3/15 cutoff date, I know it will be coming through Money Network instead of my old B of A card from when I collected benefits last time. Has anyone recently gotten a Money Network card? Do they automatically send it once your payment posts, or do I need to request one somehow? I'm a bit anxious because I've got rent due soon and I can literally see the money sitting in my UI Online account but can't access it! Not sure if I need to contact someone or just wait patiently for the card to show up in my mailbox. Really appreciate any info on how long I should expect to wait for this new Money Network card!

They automatically send the Money Network card as soon as your first payment processes. You don't need to do anything to request it. Based on my experience earlier this year, it took about 7-10 business days to arrive after my payment posted. The card comes in a plain white envelope that's easy to miss, so check your mail carefully!

Thank you so much! That's a relief to know I don't need to do anything special. Guess I just have to be patient for another week or so. Will definitely keep an eye out for that plain envelope!

I got my money network card about 2 weeks after my first payment hit my account just FYI. its not as fast as they make it sound lol

Ugh, two weeks is a long time when bills are due! I was hoping it would be faster than that. Did you call to check on the status at any point, or just wait it out?

OMG I had the same thing happened to me back in January! they don't make it clear at ALL that your first payment might hit your account before you actually have the card!! i was so frustrated seeing money there that i couldn't touch!!!!

Same here! The EDD website should really make this more clear. I spent hours trying to figure out if I did something wrong when I couldn't access my funds. The whole Money Network switch has been handled so poorly.

The card is automatically sent when your first payment processes, but here's what you should know: 1. Expect delivery in 7-14 days from the payment date 2. The envelope is plain white with a Delaware return address (easy to mistake for junk mail) 3. There's a paper insert with the card that has activation instructions 4. You'll need to create a Money Network account online to manage your funds 5. Once you have the card, you can set up direct deposit to your bank account to avoid waiting for the card in the future If it's been more than 14 days, you can contact Money Network directly at 1-888-964-1170 to check the status or request a replacement.

This is super helpful, thank you! I didn't know I could set up direct deposit to my bank account after I get the card. That will make things much easier in the future. I'll wait the 14 days before I start worrying.

If you're in a real pinch and need to speak with someone at EDD about your Money Network card or any payment issues, I had luck using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual EDD rep. They have this service that helps you bypass the phone tree and waiting. Saved me hours of frustration when I had a similar issue with my first payment. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

One more tip - you can actually monitor the status of your Money Network card shipment by calling their customer service at 1-888-964-1170. You'll need to verify your identity with your SSN and some other info, but they can tell you exactly when the card was mailed and help with tracking. This might give you peace of mind rather than just waiting and wondering.

Oh that's great to know! I'll probably give them a call if it doesn't arrive by next week. At least I can find out if it's been mailed yet.

wait i'm confused...aren't they still using Bank of America??? i thought money network was just for disability not unemployment?? or did they change everything???

EDD switched from Bank of America to Money Network for all benefit types (UI, SDI, PFL) in 2024. If you received benefits before the switch, your BofA card might still work for a while, but all new payments are going through Money Network now. The cutover officially happened in mid-March, though some people got Money Network cards earlier during the transition period.

I waited 11 days for my card and was going crazy. Called EDD 23 times trying to get through but no luck. Finally it just showed up in the mail. The system is broken they should overnight these cards when people need money for bills and food not make us wait weeks!!

I had this happen in February. The Money Network card took 9 days to arrive after my first payment posted. The most frustrating part is the lack of communication - no email, no notification, nothing to let you know when to expect it. What helped me was setting up the Money Network mobile app as soon as I got the card. It's much better than their website for tracking deposits and managing your funds. You can also set up alerts for new deposits. One thing to watch out for - when you activate the card, they'll try to upsell you on all kinds of features you don't need. Just decline them all.

That's helpful advice about the app and the upsells - thanks! I agree that the lack of communication is so frustrating. Even a simple email telling us when to expect the card would make a huge difference in reducing anxiety.
