Changed my ESD payment method - how long until it takes effect?

I switched my unemployment payment method from direct deposit to the ESD debit card yesterday through eServices. Anyone know how long it typically takes before the change goes into effect? I'm supposed to get paid this week (already filed my weekly claim) and I'm worried about where the money will end up. The ESD website doesn't give any clear timeframe. Really need this payment to come through without issues!

When I changed mine from debit card to direct deposit last month, it took effect immediately for my next payment. The system should process your change before your next payment is released. As long as you made the change at least 2 business days before your regular payment day, you should be fine.

Thanks! That's a relief. My payment usually processes on Thursdays so hopefully it'll go to the debit card like I requested.

not always that fast tho... my brother changed his and it took like 2 weeks before it actually went to his new method. maybe call ESD to confirm?

Oh no, really? Now I'm worried again. I've been trying to call but can't get through to an actual person.

I've used Claimyr to get through to ESD when I had a similar issue with payment method changes. It's a service that helps you skip the phone queue and get connected with an ESD agent. I was skeptical at first but it worked great - you can check out how it works at claimyr.com or watch their demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. The agent I spoke with confirmed my payment method change would take effect by my next payment cycle.

Oh wow, I've never heard of this. I might try it if I don't see the payment hit my debit card by Friday. Thanks for the suggestion!

just FYI the way ESD works is kinda weird... if they already started processing ur payment before u made the change then it might still go to the old method THIS week and then the new method NEXT week

This is exactly right. ESD has a cutoff point (usually Tuesday at 5pm) where they start processing that week's payments. If you made the change after that cutoff, it'll apply to next week's payment instead. The system doesn't always make this clear to claimants.

The WORST thing about ESD is that they never CLEARLY explain these timeframes ANYWHERE on their website!!! I changed my payment method THREE TIMES last year because I thought it wasn't working, only to discover later that I just hadn't waited long enough between changes! So annoying!

So true. I wish they'd update their site with actual helpful information instead of vague instructions. I had to learn everything through trial and error too.

To clarify for everyone: Payment method changes in the ESD system typically take 1-3 business days to fully process. However, if a payment is already in process when you make the change, that payment will still go to your previous method. For the original poster, since you changed it Tuesday evening, your payment this week will most likely still go to direct deposit, and next week's will go to the debit card. You can verify this by checking your payment status in eServices - it will show which payment method is being used for each specific payment.

Thanks for the clear explanation! I just checked eServices and you're right - it shows this week's payment is still going to direct deposit. At least now I know where to look for my money.
