How long does it take Washington ESD to process direct deposit changes for unemployment?
I need to update my direct deposit info for my unemployment benefits because I switched banks last week. Does anyone know how long Washington ESD takes to process these changes? I'm worried about missing my next payment if there's a delay. I tried calling but couldn't get through to anyone at the call center.

Usually takes about 1-2 business days once you submit the change through your online account. Make sure you're logged into SecureAccess Washington and go to the payment method section. The system will send you a confirmation email when it's processed.

•Thanks! I already submitted it yesterday so hopefully it goes through before my next weekly claim payment.

•wait you can change it online? I thought you had to call or mail something in

I changed mine about a month ago and it took exactly 2 business days. Just make sure your new bank account info is correct because if the deposit bounces back it can cause delays in future payments.

•Good point about double checking the account info. I triple checked the routing and account numbers before submitting.

•What happens if the deposit does bounce back? Do they send a check instead?

•They'll try to contact you to update the info, but yeah sometimes they'll mail a check as backup. Takes longer though.

The official processing time is 1-3 business days for direct deposit changes. However, I'd recommend making the change right after you file your weekly claim so you have the full week for it to process before your next payment. Also, if you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, try using Claimyr.com - they have a service that helps get through to actual ESD agents. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of Claimyr before but that sounds helpful. The phone lines are always busy when I try to call.

•Thanks for the tip about timing it with the weekly claim filing. I'll remember that for next time.

Mine took 3 days last time but that was during a holiday week so probably took longer than usual. Just keep an eye on your account to make sure the change shows up in your profile.

•Good to know holidays can affect processing time. I'll watch for the confirmation.

Gianni Serpent
•Yeah holidays definitely slow things down. Regular business days it's usually pretty quick.

Question - do you have to verify the new bank account somehow or does it just go through automatically once you submit the change?

Jibriel Kohn
•No verification needed for the bank account itself, but Washington ESD might do a small test deposit to verify the account is active. Not always though.

Olivia Kay
•I didn't get a test deposit when I changed mine. It just started going to the new account on the next payment.

•Okay good to know it's not always required. Seems pretty straightforward then.

wait so if I change my direct deposit info today will it affect this weeks payment or next weeks? I filed my weekly claim yesterday
0 coins
Gianni Serpent
•If you filed yesterday and change it today, it might be too late for this week's payment. The payment processing usually starts within 24-48 hours of filing your claim.

Henry Delgado
•damn that sucks. guess I'll have to wait for next week then

•You could try calling Washington ESD to see if they can rush the change, but honestly it's pretty hard to get through. That's where services like Claimyr come in handy for actually reaching someone.

I'm in a similar situation - had to close my old bank account because of fraud issues. Really hoping the direct deposit change goes through quickly because I can't afford to wait for a mailed check.

Ryder Ross
•That's exactly why I'm worried too. Need that payment to hit on time.

•Fraud issues are the worst. At least unemployment direct deposit changes are usually pretty fast compared to other government stuff.

Edison Estevez
•Yeah I was expecting it to take like 2 weeks based on other government agencies I've dealt with, so 1-3 days is actually pretty good.

Pro tip: take a screenshot of your direct deposit info after you submit the change, just in case there are any issues later. I've had to reference mine a couple times when payments got delayed.

Ryder Ross
•Great idea! I'll do that now. Better to have the documentation just in case.

•Good thinking. Always smart to keep records of any changes you make to your unemployment account.

One thing to watch out for - if your old bank account gets closed before the change processes, and Washington ESD tries to send a payment there, it can create a whole mess. Make sure you keep the old account open until you see the payment go to the new one.

•Ugh I already closed my old account because of the fraud. Hope that doesn't cause problems.

•If that happens, Washington ESD will get a return notice and should automatically mail you a check. It's not ideal but it's not the end of the world.

•Okay that makes me feel a bit better. I'll just have to be patient if it comes to that.

Does anyone know if credit unions take longer to process than regular banks? I'm switching to a credit union and wondering if that affects timing.
0 coins
Gianni Serpent
•Shouldn't make a difference on Washington ESD's end. The processing time is the same regardless of what type of bank you're using.

Olivia Kay
•I use a credit union and never had any issues with unemployment direct deposits. Works the same as any other bank.

•Thanks! Just wanted to make sure there weren't any weird compatibility issues or anything.

This thread is super helpful! I was thinking about changing my direct deposit too but was worried it would be complicated. Sounds pretty straightforward though.

Ryder Ross
•Yeah it's way easier than I expected. Just make sure you have your new bank info handy when you log in to make the change.

•Definitely easier than dealing with most other government stuff. Washington ESD's online system is actually pretty user-friendly for basic changes like this.

Update: I just checked and my direct deposit change from Tuesday is already showing as processed in my account. So it was exactly 2 business days like people said.

Ryder Ross
•That's encouraging! Mine should be processing soon then since I submitted yesterday.

•nice! maybe I should go ahead and change mine now so it's ready for next week

Just a heads up - if you're switching from a big bank to a smaller one, sometimes there can be routing number issues. Double check that you're using the right routing number for electronic deposits, not checks. Some banks have different ones.
0 coins
Ryder Ross
•Good point! I made sure to use the ACH routing number from my bank's website, not the one on my checks.

Sophia Rodriguez
•I didn't even know there was a difference. Thanks for mentioning that!

Mia Green
•Yeah it's not obvious but it can definitely cause delays if you use the wrong one. Most banks list both on their website.

I tried calling Washington ESD about this last week and was on hold for over 2 hours before giving up. Ended up just making the change online and it worked fine, but would have been nice to talk to someone. That Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier might be worth trying next time I need to actually speak to someone.

Edison Estevez
•2 hours on hold is crazy! I'll definitely check out Claimyr if I need to call them again.

Jibriel Kohn
•Yeah the hold times are brutal. I've had good luck with Claimyr when I really needed to get through to someone at Washington ESD. Worth the convenience.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful responses! I'll keep an eye on my account and hopefully the change processes smoothly. It's nice to know the typical timeline is just a couple days.

One last thing - make sure you keep filing your weekly claims on schedule even while the direct deposit change is processing. Missing a weekly claim can cause way more problems than a temporary payment delay.
0 coins
Ryder Ross
•Absolutely! I'm definitely staying on top of my weekly claims regardless of the bank account situation.

Emily Nguyen-Smith
•Yes! The weekly claims are way more important than worrying about the payment method. Good reminder.

For what it's worth, I've changed my direct deposit 3 times over the past year (moved twice and switched banks) and it's always been 1-2 business days. Washington ESD is actually pretty good about processing these changes quickly.

•That's really reassuring to hear! Thanks for sharing your experience.

•3 times in a year - that's a lot of banking changes! But good to know it worked smoothly each time.

•Yeah it was a crazy year with all the moving around, but at least the unemployment stuff was one less thing to worry about.

Quick question - if I change my direct deposit info, do I need to update anything else in my profile or is that the only thing that needs to be changed?
0 coins
Jibriel Kohn
•Just the direct deposit info unless your address changed too. If you moved, make sure to update your address as well since that can affect your eligibility.
0 coins
Charlie Yang
•Same address, just switching banks. So sounds like just the direct deposit change is all I need to do.

This is probably a dumb question but do you have to wait for your current payment to process before changing the direct deposit info, or can you change it anytime?
0 coins
Gianni Serpent
•You can change it anytime! The system is smart enough to handle it. If a payment is already processing to your old account, the change will just apply to the next payment.

Grace Patel
•Perfect, that's what I was hoping. Thanks!

I love how this turned into such a comprehensive thread about Washington ESD direct deposit changes. Way more helpful than the official FAQ on their website!

•Right? I got way more useful info here than from trying to navigate the Washington ESD website.
