For anyone else who needs to talk to ESD directly about PFML stuff, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier is at claimyr.com. Super helpful when you actually need to speak to a human there instead of getting stuck in phone tree hell.
Thanks everyone for all the info. Sounds like I'm stuck with just the workers comp benefits for now. Hopefully my case gets resolved soon so I can get back to work or at least apply for unemployment if I can't find a job right away.
This whole discussion makes me glad I have disability insurance through work. Workers comp alone definitely isn't enough to live on if you get seriously injured.
Filed mine at 11 PM on a Wednesday and it went smoothly. I think the late night hours are underrated - most people aren't up filing claims at that time.
Don't overthink the timing too much. Yes some times are better than others but the most important thing is just getting it filed. I stressed about the perfect time for three days before just doing it, and it worked fine.
Don't forget that you need to register with WorkSource too. That's part of the job search requirement. You can do it online but you have to keep your profile updated.
BOTTOM LINE: Washington ESD looks at why you're unemployed, whether you're available for work, and if you earned enough wages to qualify. If you meet all three criteria, you should be able to file. The specific reasons are less important than being able to prove your case if questioned.
Good luck! Remember to keep detailed records of everything and don't be afraid to ask questions if you get stuck in the process.
And if you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD, don't waste hours trying to get through. Claimyr saved me so much time and frustration when I needed answers about my claim.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info. I feel much better about tackling my taxes now. Going to double-check my 1099-G against my payment history and then bite the bullet on whatever I owe. At least now I know to have taxes withheld if I ever need unemployment again.

•Good luck with your taxes! It's definitely a learning experience the first time you have to deal with unemployment benefits on your tax return.

•Thanks! Definitely not something they teach you in school but good to know for the future.

Last tip from someone who's been through this multiple times - keep good records of all your unemployment-related documents. Payment confirmations, 1099-G forms, any correspondence with Washington ESD. Makes tax time much easier and helps if you ever need to prove anything to the IRS.

•Live and learn! At least you know for next time. Organization really pays off when dealing with government agencies.
