Where can I go to apply for unemployment in Washington - need help finding the right place
I just got laid off from my job last week and I'm trying to figure out where I can go to apply for unemployment benefits. I've never done this before and I'm not sure if I need to go somewhere in person or if I can do it online. Does anyone know where exactly I should go to start the application process? I'm in the Seattle area if that matters.

You can apply online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. That's the easiest way to do it. You don't need to go anywhere in person unless there's a specific issue with your claim.

•Thanks! Is there anything I need to have ready before I start the application?

•Yes, have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months ready. Also any separation paperwork from your employer.

I applied online last month and it was pretty straightforward. Just make sure you have all your employment info from the past year and a half.

•How long did it take for your claim to get approved?

•Mine took about 2 weeks but I know some people are waiting longer right now.

The online system is definitely the way to go. If you run into issues getting through to ESD by phone later (which happens a lot), there's actually a service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helps people get connected to ESD agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. I used it when I couldn't get through the regular phone lines.

•That's good to know! I'll bookmark that in case I need help later.

•How does that service work exactly? Do they just call for you?

Effie Alexander
•They basically handle the calling process and get you connected to an actual ESD agent. Really helpful when the phone lines are jammed.

whatever you do dont wait too long to apply!! the sooner you file the better because benefits are backdated to when you first become eligible not when you apply

•Good point, I'll get on it today. Thanks for the heads up!

Also just to clarify - you'll need to create an account on SecureAccess Washington (SAW) first before you can access the ESD unemployment application system. It's all connected but that's the first step.

Everett Tutum
•Ok got it. So SAW account first, then the unemployment application through ESD?

Sunny Wang
•Exactly. The SAW account is like your login credentials for all Washington state services including unemployment.

I tried to apply yesterday but kept getting error messages on the website. Anyone else having technical issues?

•Try clearing your browser cache and cookies. Sometimes that helps with the ESD website glitches.

•I'll try that, thanks!

There used to be WorkSource offices where you could apply in person but I think most of that moved online now. You might still be able to get help at a WorkSource location if you really need it though.

•That's good to know there's still in-person help if needed. Hopefully the online application works fine for me.

Just make sure you file your weekly claims every week once you get approved or you'll lose benefits for those weeks. I learned that the hard way.

•How do I file the weekly claims? Is that also online?

Val Rossi
•Yeah it's through the same ESD website. You just log in and answer questions about your job search and any work you did that week.

One thing to be prepared for is that you might get put into adjudication if there's anything unusual about your separation from work. That can add weeks to the process.

•What kind of things would cause adjudication?

Hugh Intensity
•Things like if you quit vs being laid off, if there was any misconduct involved, or if your employer contests the claim.

honestly the whole system is a nightmare right now. took me 6 weeks to get my first payment and thats WITH calling every single day

Everett Tutum
•That's scary. I really hope mine doesn't take that long.

•This is exactly why services like Claimyr are so helpful. Instead of calling every day yourself, they handle getting you through to ESD.

Don't let the horror stories scare you too much. Many claims go through without major issues. Just make sure you provide accurate information and respond to any requests from ESD promptly.

•Thanks, I'll try to stay positive about it.

You'll also need to register for work search requirements through WorkSourceWA once your claim is approved. That's separate from the initial application.

•So many steps! I had no idea it was this complicated.

•It's not too bad once you get into the routine. The work search thing is just documenting that you're looking for jobs.

Update: clearing my cache worked and I was able to submit my application. Thanks for the tip!

Make sure you keep copies of everything you submit and any correspondence from ESD. You might need it later for appeals or verification.

Anyone know if there's a specific time of day that's better for applying online? Like are the servers less busy at certain times?

Sunny Wang
•Early morning or late evening tend to be better. Avoid lunch hours and right after work when everyone's trying to access the system.

Also be prepared that your first payment might take longer than expected even after you're approved. The system has delays built in.

Everett Tutum
•How long should I expect for the first payment?

Val Rossi
•Usually 2-3 weeks after approval if everything goes smoothly. But it can be longer if there are any issues.

I found that having my tax returns handy was helpful too, especially if you had multiple jobs or were self-employed at any point.

•I only had one regular job so hopefully that keeps things simple.

If you do run into issues down the road and need to talk to someone at ESD, definitely check out that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. It saved me so much frustration when I needed to get my adjudication resolved.

•I'll definitely keep that in mind. Thanks for all the helpful advice everyone!

Remember to apply as soon as possible since there's a waiting week before benefits start. The sooner you file, the sooner that waiting period begins.
