How do you sign up for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD?
I just got laid off yesterday and I'm completely lost on how to sign up for unemployment benefits in Washington. I've never done this before and don't even know where to start. Do I need to go somewhere in person or can I do it online? What documents do I need to have ready? Any help would be appreciated!

You can file your initial claim online at esd.wa.gov. You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the past 18 months (employer names, addresses, dates worked), and banking info if you want direct deposit. The whole process takes about 30-45 minutes.

•Thank you! Do I need to wait a certain amount of time after being laid off or should I file right away?

•File as soon as possible! Your benefit year starts the week you file, not when you lost your job. There's a one-week waiting period anyway, so don't delay.

The Washington ESD website walks you through everything step by step. Make sure you have your last employer's full business name and address - not just what you called them. Also gather pay stubs from your last few jobs if you have them handy.

•This is good advice. I made the mistake of not having my employer's exact legal name and had to restart the application.

•Good point about the legal name. I'll make sure to check my W-2 or pay stub for the exact company name.

Just a heads up - if you have trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone for questions, I recently discovered a service called Claimyr that helps people connect with ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of busy signals.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like it might be expensive.

•I was worried about cost too, but it's actually pretty reasonable considering how much time it saves. Way better than spending entire days redialing.

dont forget you have to do the weekly claims every week or you wont get paid! learned that the hard way my first time around

•Weekly claims? What exactly do I need to do each week?

Yuki Yamamoto
•You'll file a weekly claim every Sunday for the previous week. It asks about any work you did, job contacts you made, and if you were able and available to work. Takes about 5 minutes once you get used to it.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements before you file. You need to make at least 3 job contacts per week and keep a log of them. Washington ESD is pretty strict about this now.

•3 job contacts per week? That seems like a lot. What counts as a job contact?

•Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, informational interviews - there's a list on the ESD website. You need to keep records of everything including dates and contact info.

•The job search thing is such a pain. I get that they want people actively looking but 3 contacts every single week adds up fast.

Pro tip: create your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account first if you don't already have one. That's what you'll use to log into the ESD system. Having that ready speeds up the application process.

•I think I already have a SAW account from when I registered to vote. Can I use the same one?

Amara Eze
•Yes, absolutely! Same account works for all Washington state services. Just make sure you remember your login info.

Be prepared for the system to be slow, especially on Sundays when everyone's filing their weekly claims. I usually try to do mine on Monday or Tuesday to avoid the weekend rush.

•The website crashes constantly on Sundays. Super frustrating when you're trying to file your claim.

•Good to know about the timing. I'll try to file early in the week once I get everything set up.

One thing that caught me off guard - they ask for your gross weekly wages, not your take-home pay. Make sure you have that information ready from your paystubs.

•Thanks for the heads up! I would have definitely put my net pay by mistake.

•Yeah, I made that mistake too. Had to call and get it corrected which was a nightmare.

If you get stuck during the application process, Washington ESD has pretty good online help guides. But if you need to actually talk to someone, good luck getting through. That's where services like Claimyr come in handy.

•I'm hoping I won't need to call anyone, but it's good to know there are options if I do get stuck.

•Trust me, you'll probably need to call them at some point. Something always comes up during the process.

Don't panic if your claim goes into 'adjudication' status. That just means they're reviewing something - could be routine verification or they might need additional info. It's not necessarily a bad thing.

•How long does adjudication usually take? I'm worried about how I'll pay bills if it takes too long.

Ava Thompson
•It varies a lot. Could be a few days or could be several weeks depending on what they're reviewing. If it drags on, that's when you might want to call and check on the status.

•Mine was in adjudication for 3 weeks before they approved it. No explanation for the delay, just had to wait it out.

Make sure you file even if you're not sure you qualify. Let Washington ESD make that determination. Worst case scenario, they say no, but you won't know unless you try.

Ethan Brown
•That makes sense. I was worried about filing if I wasn't sure I'd qualify, but you're right that it's better to try.

Zainab Yusuf
•Exactly. I almost didn't file because I thought I'd been at my job too short, but it turned out I qualified based on my previous employment.

The application asks about your reason for separation from work. Be honest but brief. If you were laid off, just say 'lack of work' or 'reduction in force.' Don't write a novel about it.

•Good advice. I was wondering how detailed I should be about the circumstances of my layoff.

•Keep it simple. They'll contact your employer anyway to verify the details.

Once you file, you should get a determination letter within a week or two telling you your weekly benefit amount and how long you can collect. Keep that letter - you'll need it for reference.

•Thanks! I'll make sure to save all the paperwork they send me.

•Also set up a folder for all your unemployment documents. You'll be surprised how much paperwork accumulates.

If you run into issues where you need to speak with someone at ESD, I had success using Claimyr to get through. Much easier than trying to call directly and getting busy signals all day.

•I'll definitely keep that in mind if I need to contact them. Hopefully the online application goes smoothly.

•Even if the application goes fine, you might need to call later for other issues. It's good to know about options like that.

One last tip - if you have direct deposit set up, benefits usually show up Wednesday mornings. If you're getting a debit card, it takes longer to arrive by mail.
0 coins
Ethan Brown
•Definitely going with direct deposit then. I need the money as soon as possible.

•Smart choice. The debit card thing is a pain and there are fees involved too.

Good luck with your application! The process seems overwhelming at first but once you get through the initial filing, the weekly claims become routine. You've got this!
