How do I go about filing for unemployment with Washington ESD - complete beginner
I just got laid off from my job yesterday and have no idea how to file for unemployment benefits in Washington. I've never done this before and feeling pretty overwhelmed. Where do I even start? Do I need to file immediately or can I wait a few days? What documents should I have ready? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Sorry to hear about the layoff. You'll want to file your initial claim as soon as possible since there's a waiting week. Go to esd.wa.gov and look for the 'Apply for Benefits' link. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked.

•Thanks! Do I need pay stubs or just the basic info about where I worked?

Jean Claude
•Just the basic employment info is fine for the initial application. Having your last pay stub handy helps but it's not required to start the process.

The online system walks you through everything step by step. Make sure you have a quiet hour to complete it because if you get timed out you might have to start over. Also write down your login info somewhere safe - you'll need it every week to file your weekly claims.

•How long does the whole application take to fill out?

Charity Cohan
•Maybe 30-45 minutes if you have all your employment history ready. The hardest part is remembering exact dates and addresses for previous jobs.

One thing that saved me a ton of headaches was using Claimyr to get through to an actual Washington ESD agent when I had questions during my application. The phone lines are absolutely swamped and I was getting hung up on constantly. Found this service at claimyr.com that gets you connected to a real person - there's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Totally worth it when you're stuck.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone at Washington ESD.

•Yeah I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got connected to an agent in like 10 minutes instead of calling for hours.

Don't forget you have to register with WorkSource too as part of the process. It's separate from your unemployment claim but required for job search activities. You can do it at worksourcewa.com. Also be prepared that your first payment might take 3-4 weeks if everything goes smoothly.

•Wait, I have to register somewhere else too? This is getting confusing...

Quinn Herbert
•Yeah it's annoying but they'll walk you through it. The WorkSource registration is mainly for tracking your job search activities which you have to do to keep getting benefits.

•I know right? It's like they don't want people to actually get help.

•It is complicated but once you get through the initial setup it gets easier. The weekly claims are pretty straightforward.

Make sure you file your weekly claims every week even if your initial claim is still pending. Missing a week can mess up your whole timeline. Set a reminder on your phone for Sunday mornings - that's when the new week opens up for filing.

•What happens if I forget to file one week?

•You might be able to file a late claim but it can cause delays. Better to just get in the habit of doing it every week.

Been through this twice in the last 5 years unfortunately. My advice is to keep copies of EVERYTHING. Screenshots of your applications, confirmation numbers, any correspondence. If something goes wrong you'll be glad you have documentation.

•Good tip, thanks. Should I print stuff out or are digital copies okay?

Shelby Bauman
•Digital is fine but maybe save to cloud storage too in case your computer crashes.

Just be patient with the whole thing. My claim got stuck in adjudication for like 6 weeks because they had to verify my employment history. Super stressful but it eventually worked out.

Chris Elmeda
•What's adjudication? That sounds scary.
0 coins
Hazel Garcia
•It's just when they have to investigate something about your claim. Could be verifying you were laid off and didn't quit, or checking your work history. Usually resolves itself but takes time.

•If you do get stuck in adjudication that's another time when calling Washington ESD directly really helps to check status.

Actually that reminds me - Claimyr was super helpful when my claim was in adjudication limbo. Took forever to get through on my own but they got me connected to someone who could actually explain what was happening with my case.

•how much does that cost though? im already broke from being unemployed

•It's really reasonable considering how much time and frustration it saves. Way better than spending all day redialing.

One more thing - if you worked in multiple states in the last 18 months, you might need to file an interstate claim. That can complicate things but Washington ESD will help figure out which state should handle your claim based on where you earned the most wages.

•I only worked in Washington so hopefully that keeps things simple.

•Yeah that definitely makes it easier. You should be able to do everything through the Washington ESD website then.

Oh and don't panic if the website is slow or crashes sometimes. It gets heavy traffic especially on Sundays when people are filing weekly claims. Just try again later if you run into technical issues.

•Is there a better time to file the weekly claims to avoid the rush?
0 coins
Charity Cohan
•Early morning or late evening tends to be better. Avoid Sunday afternoons if you can.

Also heads up that you'll need to report any work you do while collecting benefits, even just a few hours. They have worksheets to help calculate how it affects your weekly benefit amount. Better to report everything than risk an overpayment later.

•What if I do some freelance work here and there while looking for a full time job?
0 coins
Jean Claude
•Definitely report it. As long as you're still looking for full time work and not earning too much it usually doesn't disqualify you completely.

The job search requirements are pretty strict too. You need to do at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. Can be applying for jobs, networking, going to job fairs, etc. Just make sure you track everything.

Chris Elmeda
•Do they actually check the job search log?

Shelby Bauman
•They can audit you randomly so yeah, keep good records. I got selected for a review once and had to submit all my documentation.

honestly the worst part is how long everything takes. like why does it take weeks just to get your first payment? people need money NOW when they lose their job

•I think there's always a waiting week plus processing time. Really sucks when you have bills due.

Quinn Herbert
•The waiting week is actually eliminated in Washington now, but there's still processing time for new claims.

That's why I'm glad I found out about Claimyr early in the process. Being able to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD when I had questions made everything go so much smoother. Saved me probably hours of confusion and waiting.

•I'm definitely going to look into that if I run into problems. Thanks for the recommendation.

Overall just take it one step at a time. File the initial claim first, then worry about the weekly claims and job search stuff. Don't try to figure everything out all at once or you'll get overwhelmed.

Chris Elmeda
•That's good advice. I was starting to panic about all the different requirements.

Charity Cohan
•Yeah it seems like a lot but once you get into the routine it becomes pretty automatic.

Good luck with your claim! Feel free to ask if you run into specific issues. This forum is pretty helpful for troubleshooting Washington ESD problems.

One last tip - if you're getting any severance pay from your employer, that might affect when your benefits start. Make sure to report it accurately on your application so there are no surprises later.

•I didn't get any severance but good to know for anyone else reading this.

Welcome to the unemployment club nobody wants to join! But seriously, the system works even though it's frustrating. You'll get through this.

•Haha thanks for the encouragement. Here's hoping I don't need to be in this club for too long!
