How do I file for unemployment in Washington state - complete beginner needs help
I just got laid off from my job yesterday and I have no idea how to file for unemployment in Washington. I've never done this before and I'm honestly pretty overwhelmed by all the information online. Can someone walk me through the basic steps? Do I need to apply right away or can I wait a few days? Also, what documents do I need to have ready? I heard there's something called Washington ESD but I'm not sure if that's where I'm supposed to go.

You'll want to file as soon as possible because there's a waiting week before benefits start. Go to secure.esd.wa.gov and create an account. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and information about your last employer including their business name and address. The Washington ESD website will walk you through the application step by step.

•Thank you! Do I need to know exactly why I was laid off or just that I was laid off?

Luca Russo
•Just be honest about the reason - layoff, reduction in force, whatever your employer told you. They'll verify with your employer anyway.

Don't wait! File today if you can. I made the mistake of waiting a week thinking I needed to 'get my ducks in a row' first and I basically lost that week of benefits. The Washington ESD system is pretty straightforward once you get started.

•Oh no, I wish I had known that yesterday! I'll file today for sure.

•Actually you might still be okay - I think they can backdate it to when you actually became unemployed if you file within a few days.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my claim and it's impossible. Their phone lines are always busy and when you do get through they hang up on you. If you need to talk to someone about your application, good luck. I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually helped me get through to an agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that a legitimate service? I don't want to get scammed.

Mateo Sanchez
•Yeah it's legit, they just help you get through the phone queue. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•I've heard mixed things about third-party services. Maybe try the regular way first?

Make sure you have your bank account info ready too for direct deposit. And gather up your pay stubs from the last 18 months if you have them - Washington ESD might ask for them later.

•18 months?! I don't think I have all of those. Is that going to be a problem?

•You don't need them all right away, just have what you can find. They use it to calculate your benefit amount.

ugh the whole system is such a mess. took me 6 weeks to get my first payment and they never explained why. just keep filing your weekly claims even if nothing seems to be happening

Zara Mirza
•Weekly claims? What are those?
0 coins
Luca Russo
•After you file your initial claim, you have to file a weekly claim report every week to keep getting benefits. It asks about any work you did and money you earned that week.

One thing that caught me off guard - you have to actively look for work and keep a log of your job search activities. Washington ESD requires you to make at least 3 job contacts per week and they can audit your job search log at any time.

•Even if I was laid off? I thought unemployment was for people who lost their jobs through no fault of their own.

•Yes, even if you were laid off. You still have to be actively seeking work unless you're on standby with your employer.

•What's standby? My employer said something about calling me back when business picks up.

Luca Russo
Standby means your employer expects to call you back to work within a specific timeframe. If you're on standby, you might not have to do the job search requirement, but you need to make sure Washington ESD knows about your standby status.

Carmen Vega
•How do I tell them about standby status? Do I mention it in my initial application?
0 coins
Luca Russo
•Yes, there should be a question about whether you expect to return to work. Answer that honestly.

Just a heads up - after you file, your claim might go into something called adjudication. That's when they review your case to make sure you qualify. It can take a few weeks and there's not much you can do except wait.

Zara Mirza
•Why would my claim need to be reviewed? I was clearly laid off.

GalaxyGazer
•They review a lot of claims automatically, especially if it's your first time filing or if there's anything that needs clarification with your employer.

•adjudication is where claims go to die lol. mine sat there for a month

Don't forget to register with WorkSourceWA too! It's required and they integrate with the Washington ESD system. You can do it online at worksourcewa.com.

Zara Mirza
•Is that a separate website? This is getting confusing.

QuantumQuester
•Yeah it's separate but connected. WorkSourceWA is for job searching and career services. Washington ESD handles the actual unemployment benefits.

I'm going through this right now too and it's overwhelming! I filed last week and I'm still waiting to hear back. The hardest part is not knowing if you did something wrong.

•At least I'm not the only one feeling lost! Have you gotten any updates on your claim?

Andre Moreau
•Not yet, but I've been filing my weekly claims like everyone says to do. Fingers crossed!

If you do run into issues and need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, seriously consider using Claimyr. I wasted so many hours trying to get through on my own. Their system got me connected to an actual person who could help with my adjudication issue.

•How much does something like that cost?

Mateo Sanchez
•I'd rather not get into specifics about cost, but for me it was worth it to avoid the stress of calling over and over. You can check out their demo to see if it makes sense for your situation.

MAKE SURE YOU KEEP TRACK OF EVERYTHING!!! Save screenshots of your application, print out confirmation pages, write down confirmation numbers. I learned this the hard way when my claim got messed up and I had no proof of what I had submitted.

•Good advice! I'll start a folder for all my unemployment documents.

•Yes, documentation is key. Also keep records of all your job search activities in case they audit you.

One more thing - if you worked in multiple states in the past 18 months, your claim might be more complicated. Washington ESD will help you figure out which state you should file in.

Zara Mirza
•I've only worked in Washington, so hopefully that keeps things simple!

Mei Chen
•That definitely makes it easier. You're filing in the right state then.

The waiting is the worst part honestly. Even when everything goes smoothly it takes time. Try not to stress too much about it.

•Easier said than done when you have bills to pay, but I appreciate the encouragement!

•I know, I've been there. Just keep filing your weekly claims and eventually it will work out.

Pro tip: file your weekly claims on Sunday nights or Monday mornings. The system is less busy then and you're less likely to have technical issues.

Zara Mirza
•Thanks for the tip! I'll remember that when I start filing weekly claims.

•I always do mine Sunday evening and never had problems with the website being slow.

Just remember that your first week is a waiting week - you won't get paid for it even if you're approved. It's just how the system works in Washington.
0 coins
Zara Mirza
•So I'll be waiting at least two weeks before seeing any money even if everything goes perfectly?
0 coins
CosmicCommander
•Pretty much, yeah. The waiting week plus processing time. That's why filing immediately is so important.

Giovanni Colombo
Good luck! The system isn't perfect but it does work eventually. Just be patient and keep on top of your weekly filings.

If you get stuck on any part of the application, the Washington ESD website has pretty good help sections. Don't guess on questions - it's better to look up the right answer.
0 coins
Zara Mirza
•Will do! I'd rather take my time and get it right the first time.
0 coins
Fatima Al-Qasimi
•Exactly. Fixing mistakes later is much harder than doing it right initially.

Last thing - if you end up needing to appeal anything or have complex issues, don't be afraid to get help. The system can be confusing and there's no shame in asking for assistance whether it's from Washington ESD directly or services like Claimyr that help you get through to them.

Zara Mirza
•Hopefully I won't need to appeal anything, but good to know the option exists!

•Most claims go through fine, but it's good to know what resources are available just in case.
