How do i file for unemployment with Washington ESD - need step by step help
I just lost my job yesterday and have no idea how to file for unemployment benefits. I've never done this before and I'm honestly pretty overwhelmed by all the information on the Washington ESD website. Can someone walk me through the basic steps? Do I need to wait a certain amount of time after being laid off or can I apply right away? Also what documents do I need to have ready?

You can file immediately, don't wait! Go to secure.esd.wa.gov and create your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account first. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, dates worked, and reason for separation.

•Thank you! Do I need exact addresses for all my previous employers or just the general location?

Nia Wilson
•Exact addresses are best but if you can't find them, put what you remember and Washington ESD will verify with the employers directly.

Make sure you file during your first week of unemployment, not after. The sooner you file the sooner your claim can be processed. I waited two weeks thinking I needed to and it just delayed everything.

•Good to know, I was wondering about timing. So even though I just got laid off yesterday I should file today?

Mateo Martinez
•Yes absolutely file today if you can get all your info together.

The Washington ESD application is pretty straightforward but if you run into issues reaching them by phone, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to agents faster. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really helped when I had questions during my filing process.

•Never heard of that service before. Is it legit or one of those scams?

Aisha Hussain
•It's legit, they just help you get through the phone queue faster. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•I'll keep that in mind if I have trouble getting through. Hopefully the online application goes smoothly.

Don't forget you'll need to file weekly claims every week to get paid, even while your initial claim is being processed. Set a reminder for the same day each week so you don't miss it.

•How do I file the weekly claims? Is that on the same website?
0 coins
StarStrider
•Yes same website, you'll see the option after your initial claim is submitted. You have to report any work you did that week and any job search activities.

ugh the whole system is such a pain. took me 3 tries to get my application submitted because the website kept timing out

Luca Ferrari
•Oh no, that's frustrating. What time of day did you finally get it to work?

•early morning like 6am seemed to work better, less traffic i guess

Also make sure you understand the job search requirements. You'll need to make 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. Washington ESD can audit this so keep good records of where you applied, when, and how you applied.

•Do online applications count as job search contacts?
0 coins
Nia Wilson
•Yes online applications count. Just make sure you save confirmation emails or take screenshots as proof.

•Wait I thought it was 2 job contacts per week not 3?

Nia Wilson
•It's 3 per week in Washington state. Maybe you're thinking of a different state's requirements.

When I filed mine it asked about my bank account info for direct deposit. Make sure you have your routing and account numbers ready, it's way faster than waiting for checks in the mail.

•Good tip! How long does it usually take to start getting payments?

Andre Lefebvre
•If everything goes smoothly, about 2-3 weeks after filing. But if they need to investigate anything it can take longer.

Make sure you have your last pay stub too, they might ask for the exact date and amount of your last paycheck.

Luca Ferrari
•I think I threw that away already, will that be a problem?

Ethan Clark
•You can probably get a copy from your former employer or check if you have online paystubs you can access.

Whatever you do, be completely honest about everything. If they find out you lied about anything it can disqualify your whole claim and you might have to pay back benefits.

•Definitely planning to be 100% honest. Better safe than sorry.

•This is so important! I know someone who got in trouble for not reporting some side gig income.

The hardest part for me was remembering all the details about my previous jobs. I had to dig through old emails and tax documents to get exact dates and addresses. Start gathering that info before you sit down to fill out the application.

Luca Ferrari
•That's smart, I'll gather everything first. How far back do they want employment history?
0 coins
Mei Wong
•They want 18 months of work history to calculate your benefit amount.

Also be prepared that your claim might go into adjudication if there's anything they need to verify with your employer. Don't panic if this happens, it's pretty common.

Luca Ferrari
•What's adjudication exactly?
0 coins
QuantumQuasar
•It's when they need to investigate something about your claim, like verifying the reason you were laid off. It can take a few weeks but usually gets resolved.

•If your claim does go into adjudication and you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about it, that's another situation where Claimyr really helps. Much easier than trying to get through on your own.

One thing that tripped me up - they ask if you're able and available to work. Make sure you answer this correctly because if you say no for any reason it can delay your benefits.

Luca Ferrari
•What if I have some limitations on the type of work I can do due to a minor injury?

Liam McGuire
•You should probably talk to Washington ESD directly about that situation to make sure you answer correctly.

Don't forget to register with WorkSource too, it's required for unemployment benefits in Washington. You can do it online at worksourcewa.com

Luca Ferrari
•Is that something I do right away or can I wait until after I file my unemployment claim?

Amara Eze
•You can do it after filing your unemployment claim but don't wait too long, it's one of the ongoing requirements.

I remember being really nervous about filing but honestly the hardest part was just getting started. Once you begin the application it walks you through each step pretty clearly.

Luca Ferrari
•That's reassuring to hear. I've been putting it off because it seemed so overwhelming.

Giovanni Greco
•Totally understand that feeling! Just take it one section at a time and don't be afraid to save and come back if you need to look something up.

Make sure your contact information is correct and up to date. They'll send important notices and you don't want to miss anything because of an old address or phone number.

•Good point, I moved recently so I need to make sure I use my current address.

If you get stuck on any part of the application, there are help guides on the Washington ESD website that explain each section. I had to reference those a few times.

Luca Ferrari
•I'll definitely check those out if I need help. Are they easy to find on the site?
0 coins
Dylan Wright
•Yeah they have a whole help section, look for 'How to File' or something similar.

Just want to add that even if your claim gets approved, it can take a while to receive your first payment due to the waiting week requirement. Don't expect money immediately.
0 coins
Luca Ferrari
•What's the waiting week requirement?
0 coins
Sofia Torres
•There's a one week waiting period where you file your weekly claim but don't get paid for that week. It's just how the system works.

GalacticGuardian
The most important thing is to file as soon as possible and then stay on top of your weekly claims. Missing a weekly claim can really mess things up.

•Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice! I feel much more confident about filing now.

•You've got this! Feel free to ask if you run into any issues during the process.

•And remember if you do need to talk to Washington ESD and can't get through, Claimyr is there to help. Good luck with everything!

One last tip - take screenshots of everything as you go through the application process. If there are any issues later, having that documentation can be really helpful.

Luca Ferrari
•Great idea, I'll definitely do that. Better to have too much documentation than not enough.
