How can I get unemployment benefits through Washington ESD - need help with application process
I just lost my job last week and I'm completely lost on how to apply for unemployment benefits. I've never done this before and the Washington ESD website is confusing me. Do I need to file right away or can I wait? What documents do I need? I'm worried I'm going to mess something up and not get approved. Can someone walk me through the basic steps to get unemployment in Washington state?

You should apply as soon as possible! Go to esd.wa.gov and click on 'Apply for Benefits.' You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months. Don't wait - your benefit year starts when you file, not when you lost your job.

•Thanks! Do I need pay stubs or will they verify my wages automatically?

Zara Mirza
•Washington ESD will verify your wages with employers automatically in most cases. You might need pay stubs if there are discrepancies, but the system usually pulls everything from their database.

Make sure you have a good reason for losing your job - you can't get benefits if you quit without good cause or got fired for misconduct. If you were laid off or your position was eliminated, you should be fine.

•I was laid off due to budget cuts, so that should qualify right?

NebulaNinja
•Yes, layoffs due to budget cuts definitely qualify. That's considered involuntary separation.

The application process can be frustrating, especially if you run into issues and need to talk to someone at Washington ESD. I had problems with my initial claim and couldn't get through on the phone for weeks. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How does that work exactly? Do they just call for you?

•They navigate the phone system and wait on hold, then connect you when they get an agent on the line. Saved me hours of frustration trying to get through myself.

•Good to know there are options if I can't get through. Hopefully the application goes smoothly though.

Here's what you need to know: File online at esd.wa.gov, have your employment info ready for the last 18 months, and make sure you're available and actively looking for work. You'll need to file weekly claims every week to get paid.

•What does 'actively looking for work' mean exactly? Do I need to apply to a certain number of jobs?

Mateo Sanchez
•You need to make at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. This includes applying for jobs, networking, attending job fairs, etc. Washington ESD is pretty strict about this requirement.

ugh the whole system is such a pain. took me forever to figure out how to even start the application

•That's what I'm worried about! Was it really that complicated?

•It's not too bad once you get started. Just take your time and have all your info ready before you begin.

One thing to remember - you have to register with WorkSourceWA too. It's required for unemployment benefits. You can do it at worksourcewa.com after you file your initial claim.

Sean Flanagan
•Is that a separate website or part of the unemployment application?

NebulaNinja
•It's separate but required. Washington ESD will tell you to register there as part of your job search requirements.

Make sure you file your weekly claims on time every week or you'll lose benefits for that week. I missed one week and had to wait until the next week to get paid again.

Sean Flanagan
•When do you have to file the weekly claims? Is there a specific day?

Ethan Clark
•You can file starting Sunday for the previous week. I usually do mine on Sunday morning to make sure I don't forget.

Also be prepared that your first payment might take 2-3 weeks after you file, especially if your claim goes into adjudication. This happens when they need to verify information with your employer or review your eligibility.

Sean Flanagan
•What's adjudication? That sounds scary.
0 coins
Zara Mirza
•It's just a review process. Not necessarily bad, but it can delay your payments while they verify details about why you're unemployed.

I second the recommendation about Claimyr if you run into problems. Washington ESD phone lines are notorious for being impossible to get through on. I used them when my claim got stuck and it was worth every penny.

•How much does something like that cost?

Nia Wilson
•I'd rather not get into pricing here, but it was reasonable considering how much time and stress it saved me. Check out their site if you need it.

Don't forget you'll need to report any income you earn while collecting unemployment, even part-time work. Washington ESD will deduct from your benefits based on what you earn.

Sean Flanagan
•So I can work part-time and still get some unemployment?
0 coins
Mateo Sanchez
•Yes, but they'll reduce your weekly benefit amount based on how much you earn. There's a formula they use.

just make sure you answer all the questions honestly on the application. they will find out if you lie about anything

•Of course! I definitely don't want to get in trouble for fraud or anything.

The waiting week has been eliminated in Washington, so you should get paid for your first week if you're eligible. That's one less thing to worry about compared to some other states.

•That's good news! I was wondering about that.

If you have any military service, make sure to mention that on your application. There might be additional benefits or considerations for veterans through Washington ESD.

Sean Flanagan
•I don't have military service, but good to know for others reading this.

One more tip - keep records of everything. Save copies of your application, weekly claims, and any correspondence from Washington ESD. You might need them later if there are any issues.

•Good advice! I'll make sure to screenshot everything.

Zara Mirza
•Screenshots are good, but also try to save actual documents when possible. PDFs are better than images for record keeping.

The most important thing is just to get started. The application isn't as scary as it seems once you begin. Take it one step at a time and don't overthink it.

•Thanks everyone! This gives me the confidence to start the application today.

Remember that if you're denied for any reason, you have the right to appeal. Don't give up if your initial application gets rejected - sometimes it's just a misunderstanding that can be cleared up.
0 coins
Sean Flanagan
•How long do you have to appeal if something goes wrong?
0 coins
Mateo Sanchez
•You have 30 days from the date of the determination notice to file an appeal with Washington ESD.

also if you get confused by any of the questions just call them. but good luck getting through lol

•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier - getting through to Washington ESD on the phone is nearly impossible without help.

Final reminder: make sure you're physically able to work and available for work when you file. If you have any medical conditions that prevent you from working, you might need to look into disability benefits instead of unemployment.

•I'm healthy and ready to work, so unemployment should be the right program for me.

Good luck with your application! The process has gotten better over the years, and most people who qualify get approved without major issues. Just be patient with the system and follow all the requirements.

•Thank you all so much! I feel much more prepared now. Going to start my application right after I gather all my employment information.

You've got this! Just remember to file those weekly claims every week once you're approved. That's the most common mistake people make - forgetting to file and missing out on benefits.

•I'll set a reminder on my phone for every Sunday. Thanks again everyone!
