How to file for unemployment benefits in Washington - step by step process?
Lost my job last Friday and need to figure out how to file for unemployment benefits. I've never done this before and the Washington ESD website is confusing me. Can someone walk me through the actual steps? Do I need to gather specific documents first? Really stressed about this whole process and don't want to mess anything up.

First step is to create your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account if you don't have one. Then go to esd.wa.gov and click 'Apply for Benefits'. You'll need your SSN, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked.

•Do I need exact dates or just months? I worked at a few different places and don't remember exact start/end dates.

•Approximate dates are okay, but try to be as accurate as possible. Washington ESD will verify with your employers anyway.

make sure you apply within the first week after losing your job or you might lose benefits for that week. i made that mistake and it cost me $800

•Oh no, I'm already 4 days late! Will I lose money?

•You can still apply retroactively for the week you lost your job, but you need to do it ASAP. Don't wait any longer.

The online application takes about 30-45 minutes if you have all your info ready. After you submit, you'll get a confirmation number - SAVE IT. Then you wait for Washington ESD to process your claim which can take 2-3 weeks right now.

•2-3 weeks?? I need money now to pay rent. Is there any way to speed this up?

•Unfortunately the waiting period is standard. You can try calling Washington ESD but good luck getting through. I've been trying for weeks about my own claim issues.

•Actually, there's a service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. I found it at claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. They basically handle the calling and waiting for you.

Don't forget you'll need to file weekly claims even while your initial application is being processed. This is super important - if you don't file weekly claims you won't get paid for those weeks even if your claim gets approved.

•How do I file weekly claims if my account isn't set up yet?

Brielle Johnson
•Once you submit your initial application, you can log into your account and file weekly claims. Do it every Sunday for the previous week.

The whole system is a nightmare honestly. I filed 3 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything. No one answers the phone, the website crashes half the time, and the automated system just hangs up on you.

•This is exactly what I'm worried about. How are people supposed to survive while waiting?

•I get the frustration but complaining doesn't help. The system is overwhelmed but it does work eventually. Focus on getting your application in correctly.

Here's what you need to gather before starting the application: 1) Social Security number 2) Driver's license or state ID 3) Complete work history for past 18 months including company names, addresses, phone numbers, supervisor names, and employment dates 4) Reason for job separation 5) Bank account info for direct deposit

•What if I was fired vs laid off? Does that matter?
0 coins
Reina Salazar
•Yes, it matters a lot. If you were fired for misconduct you might not qualify. If you were laid off due to lack of work, you should be fine. Be honest about the reason.

•I was laid off due to company downsizing, so I think I'm okay there.

also be prepared for the job search requirements. you have to look for work and keep a log of your activities. they can audit you at any time

•How many jobs do I need to apply for each week?
0 coins
Mason Lopez
•It's usually 3 job search activities per week. Can be applications, networking, interviews, job fairs, etc. Keep detailed records.

I'm in week 4 of waiting and getting desperate. Called Washington ESD 47 times yesterday and either got busy signal or hung up on. This is insane.

•This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. They specialize in getting through to Washington ESD when the lines are jammed. Saved me hours of frustration.

•Is it legit though? Sounds too good to be true.

•Yeah it's real. They don't ask for your personal info or anything sketchy. Just helps you get through the phone system.

The key is being thorough with your initial application. Incomplete or inaccurate information causes delays. Double-check everything before submitting. If you're unsure about anything, it's better to call and ask than to guess wrong.

•But you just said calling is impossible! How am I supposed to ask questions?

Demi Lagos
•Fair point. The online help section is actually pretty good, or you can try early morning calls around 7:30 AM when they open.

•6 weeks?! How did you survive that long without income?

•credit cards and borrowing from family. not ideal but you do what you have to do

Pro tip: After you submit your application, print out the confirmation page and save all your documents. You might need them later if there are any issues with your claim.

•What kind of issues should I watch out for?

Mason Lopez
•Identity verification, wage disputes, job separation issues. Having your paperwork ready makes everything faster.

Whatever you do, don't lie on the application. They cross-reference everything with your employers and tax records. Getting caught in a lie will disqualify you permanently.

•I wouldn't lie but what if I genuinely can't remember something accurately?

•Then estimate as best you can and note that it's an estimate. Honesty is always better than guessing wrong.

The waiting week is gone now so you should get paid for your first week if you're eligible. That changed a few years ago.

•What's a waiting week?
0 coins
Clay blendedgen
•Used to be you had to wait one week before getting benefits. Now you get paid starting from your first eligible week.

Make sure you understand the difference between filing your initial claim and filing weekly claims. You file the initial claim once, then file weekly claims every week to get paid.
0 coins
Dallas Villalobos
•This is confusing. Do I file weekly claims before my initial claim is approved?
0 coins
Ayla Kumar
•Yes! You file weekly claims while your initial claim is being processed. If you don't file for a week, you can't get paid for that week later.

If you have any issues after filing, document everything. Screenshots, confirmation numbers, dates and times of calls. This helps if you need to appeal anything later.

Dallas Villalobos
•Appeal what? I thought if you qualify you just get benefits.

•Sometimes claims get denied for various reasons. Having documentation helps if you need to challenge the decision.

For anyone struggling to get through to Washington ESD by phone, I'll mention Claimyr one more time. Really helped me when I was stuck in adjudication hell. Check out their demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ to see how it works.

Remember you can also apply by phone if the website isn't working. The number is 800-318-6022 but expect long wait times.

•Is applying by phone any faster than online?

Lim Wong
•Not really, but it's an option if you're having technical issues with the website.

Don't forget to sign up for direct deposit when you file. Getting a debit card takes longer and has fees.

Dallas Villalobos
•Can I change to direct deposit later if I forget?

Dananyl Lear
•Yes, you can change payment method in your online account after your claim is processed.

One last thing - keep filing those weekly claims even if you find a job right away. You might be eligible for partial benefits if you're working reduced hours.

•Yeah the job market is rough. Unemployment benefits will help bridge the gap while you search.
