How to file for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD - step by step process?

Lost my job last week and need to figure out how to file for unemployment benefits in Washington. I've never done this before and the Washington ESD website is confusing me. Do I need to create an account first? What documents do I need to have ready? How long does the whole process take? Really stressed about this and could use some guidance on the steps to get started.

First thing you need to do is go to esd.wa.gov and create your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account if you don't have one already. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked. The actual application takes about 30-45 minutes if you have everything ready.

Thanks! Do I need pay stubs or just the basic employment info?

Ashley Simian

•

Just the basic info for filing - employer names, addresses, phone numbers, and your last day worked. Washington ESD will verify everything with your employers directly.

Make sure you file as soon as possible because there's a waiting week and benefits are calculated from when you file, not when you lost your job. I waited two weeks after getting laid off and it delayed everything.

Oh no, I already waited a week. Will that hurt my claim?

You should be fine as long as you file this week. The waiting week is built into the system anyway.

I just went through this process last month. After you submit your initial claim, you'll get a determination letter in about 7-10 days. If you have any issues or your claim gets stuck in adjudication, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD when I couldn't reach them by phone. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

How much does that service cost? Seems like something you should be able to do yourself.

It's worth it when you're dealing with Washington ESD's phone system. I spent weeks trying to get through and couldn't reach anyone. Sometimes you need help navigating the system.

Good to know there are options if I run into problems. Hoping my claim goes smoothly though.

Here's the complete process: 1) Create SAW account at secure.esd.wa.gov 2) File your initial claim online 3) Wait for your determination letter 4) Once approved, file weekly claims every Sunday 5) Complete your job search activities (3 per week minimum). Make sure you're available for work and actively seeking employment or your benefits can be denied.

What counts as job search activities? Just applying for jobs?

Job applications, networking events, job fairs, informational interviews, skills assessments. Keep detailed records in your job search log.

ugh the washington esd website is terrible, took me forever to figure out where to even start filing

That's exactly what I'm dealing with right now! The navigation is so confusing.

Try starting from the homepage and look for 'File a Claim' - it's usually in the main menu or highlighted on the front page.

Don't forget you need to register with WorkSource too within 30 days of filing your claim. It's a separate system but required for unemployment benefits.

Is that the WorkSourceWA website? More accounts to create...

Felicity Bud

•

Yes, WorkSourceWA.com. It's annoying having multiple systems but it's mandatory.

I filed three months ago and still dealing with adjudication issues. If your claim gets complicated, be prepared for a long wait. The phone lines are always busy and getting actual help is nearly impossible.

Have you tried calling first thing in the morning? I heard that's when you have the best chance.

Tried everything - early morning, late afternoon, different days. The system just hangs up on you after being on hold.

This is exactly why I used Claimyr. Couldn't waste more time trying to reach them myself.

Make sure you have your bank account info ready for direct deposit setup. Getting checks by mail takes forever and they can get lost.

Good point, I'll have my routing and account numbers ready.

The hardest part is the waiting. Even if everything goes perfect, you won't see money for at least 2-3 weeks after filing. Plan accordingly.

0 coins

This is why I tell everyone to file immediately. Every day you wait is money you're not getting.

Filing today for sure. Thanks everyone for the advice!

One thing nobody mentions - if you worked in multiple states in the last 18 months, your claim might be more complicated. Washington ESD has to coordinate with other states which can delay things.

I only worked in Washington so hopefully that won't be an issue for me.

Pro tip: screenshot everything during the filing process. If there are any issues later, having records of what you submitted helps a lot.

Also print out your confirmation page when you submit. I learned that the hard way.

The system goes down for maintenance every Sunday night so don't wait until the last minute to file your weekly claims. I missed a week because of that.

Miguel Harvey

Good to know! I'll make sure to file earlier in the week.

If you get denied for any reason, don't panic. You can appeal within 30 days and often get it overturned if you have good documentation.

Appeals take forever though. Better to get it right the first time if possible.

Remember that unemployment is taxable income. You can have taxes withheld or pay quarterly but don't forget about it come tax time.

I didn't even think about taxes. Thanks for the reminder.

So true. They make it as difficult as possible hoping people just quit trying.

When I couldn't get through to Washington ESD about my claim status, I ended up using Claimyr to help me connect with an agent. Worked way better than trying to call myself - saved me hours of frustration.

Did they actually help resolve your issue or just get you through to someone?

They got me connected to a real person who could access my account and explain what was holding up my claim. Worth every penny.

Just want to add that if your employer contests your claim, be prepared for adjudication which can take weeks or months. Keep all your documentation about why you lost your job.

Miguel Harvey

My employer said they wouldn't contest it since it was a layoff, so hopefully that won't be an issue.

Filed my claim six months ago and finally getting regular payments now. The system is slow but it does work eventually. Don't give up!

Thanks for the encouragement! Going to start the process right now.
