Where can I apply for unemployment benefits in Washington state?
Lost my job last week and need to figure out where to apply for unemployment benefits. I've heard there's an online system but I'm not sure if that's the only way or if I can apply somewhere in person. Does anyone know the correct website or office locations? I'm in the Seattle area if that matters. Really need to get this started ASAP since bills are piling up.

You apply online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. Look for the 'Apply for Benefits' section. It's all done electronically now, no need to go anywhere in person unless there's a specific issue with your claim.

•Thanks! Do I need to have all my employment info ready before I start the application?

•Yes definitely have your last employer's info, your Social Security number, and employment dates ready. Makes the process much smoother.

You can apply online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. Look for the 'Apply for Benefits' section. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license or state ID, and employment history for the past 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked.

•Thanks! Do I need to wait a certain amount of time after losing my job to apply?

•No, you should apply as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. There's a one-week waiting period before benefits start, but filing early ensures you don't miss any potential payments.

i think you can also call them but good luck getting through lol. the website is probably your best bet

•Actually, if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

Make sure you apply as soon as possible after your last day of work. There's usually a waiting week but you want to get the process started right away. The application itself takes about 30-45 minutes if you have all your info ready.

Keisha Robinson
•What kind of information do they ask for during the application?
0 coins
Natasha Volkova
•They'll want your employment history for the last 18 months, reason for separation, wage info, and personal details. Pretty standard stuff but have your pay stubs handy.

You apply online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. There's no in-person application process anymore - everything is done through their secure online portal. You'll need to create an account and have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history ready.

•Thanks! Do I need to wait until a certain day of the week to apply or can I do it anytime?

Ethan Wilson
•You can apply anytime, but the sooner the better. Your benefit year starts the week you file, so don't delay.

The online application is pretty straightforward but make sure you have all your employment info ready. You'll also need to create a SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account if you don't already have one. That's the login system Washington ESD uses.

•What if I worked for multiple employers? Do I need info for all of them?
0 coins
GalacticGuru
•Yes, you need employment history for the past 18 months. Include all employers, even part-time or temporary jobs. The system uses this to calculate your benefit amount.

The website can be confusing at first. When you get to esd.wa.gov, look for the big blue button that says something like 'File a New Claim' or 'Apply for Benefits.' Don't get sidetracked by all the other links.

•This! I spent like 20 minutes clicking around before I found the actual application.

•Good to know, I'll look for that blue button specifically.

The website is secure.esd.wa.gov/home - that's the main portal where you'll do everything including weekly claims later on. Make sure you have all your employer info from the last 18 months because they ask for detailed work history.

Aisha Rahman
•18 months? That's a lot of info to gather. Do I need exact dates for everything?

Carmen Flores
•Yes, be as accurate as possible with dates and wages. They'll verify everything with your employers so don't guess.

I applied last month and it was all online. No need to visit an office unless you have specific issues. One thing that helped me was using Claimyr.com when I needed to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD. The phone lines are always busy but their service got me through to an agent in minutes instead of trying to call for hours.

Fatima Al-Suwaidi
•How does that work exactly? Do they charge you?
0 coins
Giovanni Mancini
•They have different options but basically they handle the calling and waiting for you. Check out their demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ to see how it works. Way better than spending your whole day redialing busy signals.

Also heads up that after you apply, you'll need to file weekly claims to actually get paid. A lot of people don't realize that and think filing the initial claim is all you need to do.
0 coins
Keisha Robinson
•How often do you have to file these weekly claims?
0 coins
Emma Davis
•Every week, usually Sunday through Saturday. You report if you worked any hours or earned any money that week.

•And you have to do job search activities too. Keep track of where you apply because they might ask for proof.

Just went through this myself a few months ago. The application process itself isn't too bad but getting through to someone at Washington ESD when you have questions is nearly impossible. I spent hours trying to call their customer service line.

How long does it typically take to get approved and start receiving benefits?

•If everything goes smoothly, you could see your first payment in 2-3 weeks. But if your claim goes into adjudication for any reason, it can take much longer - sometimes 4-6 weeks or more.
0 coins
Dylan Cooper
•What causes adjudication? I'm worried mine might get delayed.
0 coins

•Common reasons include issues with how you left your job, earnings discrepancies, or if you worked in multiple states. Sometimes it's just routine verification.

Aisha Rahman
What happens after I submit the application? Do I get approved right away or is there a waiting period?

•There's usually a determination process that can take 1-3 weeks. They'll send you a monetary determination letter showing your benefit amount, then an eligibility determination.

Do I need to be completely unemployed to apply? I'm working reduced hours at my current job but it's not enough to cover my bills.
0 coins
Liam Fitzgerald
•No, you can apply for partial unemployment benefits if your hours were reduced. You'll need to report your weekly earnings when you file your weekly claims, and Washington ESD will calculate a partial benefit amount.

Make sure you keep track of all your job search activities from day one. Washington ESD requires you to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of your activities.

One thing to watch out for - if you have any complications with your application or it gets stuck in adjudication, trying to reach Washington ESD by phone is nearly impossible. That's when I used Claimyr to actually get through to someone. Saved me weeks of calling.

Question about the weekly claims - do I need to file them even if my regular claim is still being processed?

The whole system is ridiculous. I've been trying to get answers about my claim for 3 weeks and can't reach anyone. The automated system just hangs up on you after an hour of waiting.

The main thing is just getting that initial application submitted. Everything else you can figure out as you go. The system will guide you through the weekly filing process once you're approved.

Does anyone know if I can apply if I was fired? My employer said it was for performance issues but I think it was really budget cuts.

I'm confused about the work search requirements. Do volunteer activities count toward the 3 weekly job contacts?
0 coins

•Volunteer work doesn't count as a job contact, but it can count as a work search activity if it's related to gaining skills for employment. You still need actual job applications, interviews, or networking contacts for your 3 weekly requirements.

The application asks for wage information but I don't have all my pay stubs. Will Washington ESD get that information from my employer directly?
0 coins

•Washington ESD gets wage information from employers through quarterly reports, but it's helpful to provide what you have. If you're missing recent pay stubs, you can usually get copies from your employer's HR department or payroll system.

Applied 2 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything. Should I be worried or is this normal processing time?

Remember that your first week is a waiting week - you won't get paid for that week even if you're approved. It's just how the system works in Washington.
0 coins
Mei Lin
•So even if I'm approved, I won't get paid for my first week of unemployment?

Can I apply if I quit my job? I had to leave due to unsafe working conditions during COVID.
