Can I apply for unemployment benefits online with Washington ESD?

I just got laid off yesterday and need to file for unemployment. Can I apply for unemployment benefits online through Washington ESD or do I have to go somewhere in person? I've never done this before and honestly have no idea where to start. My employer said something about filing right away but didn't give me much detail. Any help would be appreciated!

Yes, you can absolutely apply online! Go to secure.esd.wa.gov and create your account if you don't have one already. The whole process is done through their website now - no need to visit an office. Make sure you have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months ready.

Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or just employer info?

0 coins

Just employer info - names, addresses, dates worked, and reason for separation. They'll verify wages through their system.

The online application is pretty straightforward but can take 30-45 minutes to complete. Don't rush through it because mistakes can cause delays in processing. I'd recommend having all your info organized before you start.

This is good advice. I made a typo in my employer's name and it held up my claim for weeks while they tried to verify it.

Same thing happened to me with wrong dates. Double check everything before submitting!

I struggled so much trying to get through to Washington ESD by phone to ask questions about my application. The hold times are absolutely ridiculous. I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you connected to a real person at Washington ESD without waiting on hold for hours. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Saved me so much time and frustration!

Wait, really? How does that work exactly?

They basically call Washington ESD for you and get you connected when an agent becomes available. No more sitting on hold forever or getting disconnected.

That sounds too good to be true but I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

Make sure you apply as soon as possible! Your benefit year starts the week you file your claim, not when you lost your job. I waited a week thinking I needed to organize everything first and basically lost a week of benefits.

Oh no, I already waited a day! Should I file today even if I don't have all my paperwork ready?

0 coins

Yes, file today! You can always provide additional documentation later if needed.

The Washington ESD website can be a bit glitchy sometimes, especially during busy periods. If you get error messages, try clearing your browser cache or using a different browser. Chrome seems to work best in my experience.

I had issues with Safari but Firefox worked fine for me.

The site crashed on me three times last month. So frustrating when you're trying to file your weekly claim!

After you submit your initial application online, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to get paid. This is also done online through the same website. Don't forget to do this even if your claim is still pending - you can't get retroactive weekly claims if you miss filing them.

How long does it usually take to get approved after filing online?

If there are no issues, usually 1-2 weeks. But if they need to verify something or do adjudication, it can take much longer.

Mine took 6 weeks because they had to verify my separation reason. Be patient but keep filing weekly claims!

Don't forget you'll need to register with WorkSource Washington as part of the process too. They usually send you information about this after you file, but you can get ahead of it by creating an account at worksourcewa.com.

Is this required for everyone or just certain types of claims?

Pretty much everyone unless you're on standby or have a union hiring hall situation.

I've been through this process twice now and honestly the online system is so much better than it used to be. Used to have to mail in forms and wait weeks just to get confirmation they received them. Now everything is instant and you can track your claim status online.

Agreed! The old paper system was a nightmare. At least now you can see what's happening with your claim.

The tracking is nice but I still can't figure out why my claim is stuck in adjudication with no explanation.

One thing to watch out for - make sure you answer all the questions accurately about why you lost your job. If you quit or were fired for misconduct, you might not be eligible. If you were laid off due to lack of work, you should be fine.

I was definitely laid off, not fired. Company is downsizing and eliminated my position entirely.

Perfect, that's exactly the situation unemployment benefits are designed for. You should have no issues getting approved.

Just went through this last month when I got laid off. The online application was pretty easy but I had trouble reaching anyone at Washington ESD when I had questions about my claim status. Ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it was a lifesaver. Got connected to an actual person in like 10 minutes instead of calling all day and getting busy signals.

How much does something like that cost?

0 coins

I'm not sure about the exact cost but it was worth every penny to actually talk to someone and get my questions answered. Way better than the stress of trying to call dozens of times.

I might have to try this. I've been calling Washington ESD for two weeks with no luck.

Make sure to keep copies of everything you submit online. Screenshot your confirmation pages and save any reference numbers they give you. I learned this the hard way when I had to prove I filed on a certain date.

Great tip! I always screenshot everything now after having issues with other government websites losing my info.

Yes! And check your email regularly because they'll send important updates there too.

The whole process is designed to be done online now, especially after COVID. Much more efficient than the old system. Just make sure you have a reliable internet connection and don't try to do it on your phone - the desktop version works much better.

I did my initial application on my phone and it was a pain. Desktop is definitely the way to go.

The mobile version has gotten better but still not as good as using a computer.

One more thing - after you file online, you should get an email confirmation. If you don't see it within an hour or so, check your spam folder. Sometimes those emails get filtered out.

Mine went to spam the first time! Good catch.

Thanks everyone for all the help! I'm going to file online today. This has been super helpful.
