Can you file for unemployment online with Washington ESD?
Hey everyone, I just got laid off yesterday and need to file for unemployment benefits. Can you file for unemployment online through Washington ESD or do I have to go somewhere in person? I'm trying to figure out the fastest way to get my claim started. Any help would be appreciated!

Yes, you can definitely file online! Go to esd.wa.gov and look for the 'Apply for Benefits' link. You'll need to create an account if you don't have one already. The whole process can be done from your computer.

•Thanks! Do I need any specific documents ready before I start the application?

•You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked.

The online system is actually pretty straightforward. I filed mine last month after getting furloughed. Just make sure you have all your employment info ready because it asks for a lot of details about your previous jobs.

•How long did it take you to complete the application?

•About 30-45 minutes if you have all your info organized beforehand.

I tried filing online but kept running into technical issues with the Washington ESD website. The system would time out or I'd get error messages. Super frustrating when you're stressed about money already.

•I had similar problems but found a service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents by phone. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Interesting, I'll check that out. Sometimes talking to a real person is easier than fighting with websites.

Online filing is definitely the way to go. You can also track your claim status, file weekly claims, and upload documents all through the same portal once your initial application is submitted.

•What happens after you submit the online application? Do they contact you right away?

•You'll get a confirmation number and they'll mail you information about your claim within a few days. If there are no issues, you could start receiving benefits in 2-3 weeks.

One thing to remember - you need to file your claim within a reasonable time after becoming unemployed. Don't wait too long or you might lose benefits for those earlier weeks.

•How long is 'reasonable'? I was laid off two weeks ago but just found out about filing online.

•Two weeks is fine. Generally you want to file within the first few weeks of unemployment. Washington ESD will backdate your claim to when you actually became unemployed.

The Washington ESD online system is light years better than it used to be. I remember having to call or visit offices years ago and waiting in long lines. Now everything is digital which is so much more convenient.

•Agreed! Though sometimes I still prefer talking to someone when I have specific questions about my claim.

•That's where Claimyr comes in handy - it helps you actually get through to Washington ESD phone agents without waiting on hold forever.

Make sure you read everything carefully when filing online. I rushed through mine and made a mistake with my employment dates that caused delays in processing my claim.

Andre Laurent
•What kind of delays did that cause?

•My claim went into adjudication and took an extra 3 weeks to resolve. Could have avoided that with more careful attention to detail.

•Adjudication is the worst! Mine was stuck for a month over a simple clerical error.

Does anyone know if you can file online if you're partially unemployed? Like if your hours got cut but you're still working part-time?

Isabella Brown
•Yes, you can file for partial benefits online through the same system. You'll just need to report your reduced hours and earnings when you file your weekly claims.

Aria Park
•That's a relief! I wasn't sure if partial unemployment qualified.

The online filing is great but don't forget you'll need to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. That's also done online through the same system.

•How do the weekly claims work exactly?

Noah Ali
•Every week you log in and report whether you worked, looked for work, and if you were available for work. It takes just a few minutes each week.

I had trouble with the job search requirements section when filing online. Wasn't sure exactly what they wanted me to put down since I had just been laid off.

•For the initial application, you don't need to have completed job searches yet. That requirement starts after your claim is approved and you begin filing weekly claims.

•Oh that makes sense! I was worried I needed to have already started looking before I could even file.

Pro tip: make sure your browser allows pop-ups from the Washington ESD website. Some of the forms open in new windows and if you have pop-ups blocked it won't work properly.

Andre Laurent
•Good to know! I have pretty strict pop-up blockers so I'll adjust those settings.

•Also make sure you're using a supported browser. I had issues with an older version of Safari.

Filing online is definitely possible but sometimes you still need to talk to someone at Washington ESD to resolve issues or get clarification on your claim status.

•Exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. It's been a lifesaver when I needed to actually reach a Washington ESD representative instead of waiting hours on hold.

•How does that service work exactly?

•They basically handle the waiting and calling for you, then connect you when an agent is available. Saves tons of time and frustration.

The online system asks for a lot of personal information so make sure you're on the official Washington ESD website (esd.wa.gov) and not some scam site.

•Good point! Are there fake unemployment sites out there?

Drake
•Unfortunately yes, especially sites that claim to help you file for a fee. The official Washington ESD application is always free.

I filed online three months ago and the whole process was smooth. Just be patient because it can take a while for everything to get processed and approved, especially during busy periods.

•How long did it take from filing to getting your first payment?
0 coins
Sebastian Scott
•About 3 weeks total, but that included a holiday weekend. Most people I know got their first payment within 2-3 weeks.

One more thing - after you file online, make sure to check your account regularly for any messages or requests for additional information. Missing those can delay your claim significantly.

•How often should you check your account?

Emily Sanjay
•I'd check at least every couple days, especially in the first few weeks after filing. Washington ESD will post updates and requests there.
