How do I file a new claim for unemployment with Washington ESD?
I just got laid off from my job last week and need to file for unemployment benefits. I've never done this before and I'm not sure where to start with Washington ESD. Do I need to go somewhere in person or can I do it online? What documents do I need to have ready? I'm really stressed about this whole process and could use some guidance on the first steps.

You can file online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked. The online application is available 24/7 which is convenient.

•Thank you! Do I need to know exact dates or just approximate months?

•Exact dates are better but if you don't have them, approximate is okay. They might ask for more details later during processing.

•Oh no, how long is it supposed to take?

•Normal processing is 2-3 weeks, but it can take longer if there are any issues with your application or if it goes into adjudication.

Here's what you need to know: File your claim the week you become unemployed, not before. You'll create an account on SecureAccess Washington (SAW) first, then access the unemployment application. Have your employment history ready - employer names, addresses, phone numbers, supervisor names, dates of employment, and reason for separation. Also have your bank account info for direct deposit.

•This is really helpful! Should I file right away or wait?

•File as soon as possible after your last day of work. Benefits are paid from the date you file, not from when you lost your job.

•I waited a week thinking I might find something quick and it cost me that week's benefits. Don't make my mistake!

I had such a hard time getting through to Washington ESD when I had questions about my application. Spent hours on hold and kept getting disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me so much frustration!

•Wait, is this legit? I'm desperate to talk to someone about my claim.

•Yeah it's real, they basically call for you and get you connected when an agent is available. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•Good point, I should gather all that paperwork first.

One important thing - after you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to continue receiving benefits. Don't miss those deadlines or you could lose benefits for that week.

•How do I know when to file the weekly claims?

Logan Scott
•You'll get instructions after your initial claim is processed. Weekly claims are usually filed on Sundays for the previous week.

The whole process is honestly pretty straightforward once you get started. I was intimidated at first too but the online application walks you through everything step by step. Just make sure you answer all questions honestly and completely.

WHAT IF I DONT HAVE ALL MY EMPLOYMENT HISTORY?? I worked for this small company that went out of business and I dont have their address or phone number anymore

•Do your best to provide what information you have. Washington ESD can help verify employment history through their records. Put down what you remember and note in the comments that the business closed.

•ok good because I was panicking about that

also heads up - if u get fired they might put your claim in adjudication to determine if u qualify. that can take weeks

•I was laid off due to company downsizing, so hopefully that won't be an issue.

•Layoffs due to lack of work are usually straightforward and shouldn't trigger adjudication.

Just want to add that you should keep records of everything - screenshot your application, save confirmation numbers, keep copies of any documents you upload. The system can be glitchy sometimes.

•Great advice, I'll definitely do that.

If you run into any issues during the application process and can't get through to Washington ESD, definitely check out that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. They've been super helpful for people trying to get answers about their claims.

Remember you need to be able and available for work too. That means you're physically and mentally able to work and available for full-time employment during normal business hours.

one more thing - have your direct deposit info ready or they'll send you a debit card which takes longer

•Good to know, I'll have my bank account info ready.

The application itself takes about 30-45 minutes if you have all your info ready. Don't rush through it - better to take your time and get everything right the first time.

•I'll set aside some time this weekend to do it properly.

Also, if you worked in multiple states in the past 18 months, you might need to file in a different state. Washington ESD will let you know if that's the case.

•I've only worked in Washington, so I should be good there.

Good luck with your application! The hardest part is just getting started. Once you file, you'll get a confirmation and then wait for them to process it.

You're welcome! Just remember to file your weekly claims on time once your initial claim is approved, and keep looking for work. The job search requirements are important to maintain your benefits.

One last tip - if your claim gets denied for any reason, you have the right to appeal. Don't give up if that happens, just make sure you appeal within the deadline.

•Hopefully it won't come to that, but good to know I have options.
