Where to file for unemployment - Washington ESD application process help needed
I just got laid off yesterday and need to figure out where to file for unemployment benefits in Washington state. I've never done this before and I'm completely lost. Do I go to a physical office or is everything online now? I heard there's something called Washington ESD but I'm not sure if that's the right place or if there are other steps I need to take first. Any guidance would be really appreciated - I'm stressed about getting this started ASAP.

Everything is done online through Washington ESD (Employment Security Department). You'll need to go to esd.wa.gov and create an account. The system is called SecureAccess Washington (SAW) and that's where you'll file your initial claim and do your weekly claims too.

•Thank you! Is there anything I should have ready before I start the application?

•Yes, have your Social Security card, driver's license, and employment info for the last 18 months ready. You'll need employer names, addresses, dates worked, and reason for separation.

The Washington ESD website can be tricky to navigate at first. Make sure you're on the official esd.wa.gov site and not some third-party site. You'll create your SAW account first, then file your unemployment claim through that portal.

•Good point about making sure it's the official site. Are there any common mistakes I should avoid when filling it out?

•Don't rush through it. Double-check all your employer information and make sure your reason for separation is accurate. Mistakes can cause delays in processing.

I tried calling Washington ESD to ask questions before filing but couldn't get through after hours of trying. The phone lines are always busy. If you need to talk to someone, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to actual ESD agents. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•That's interesting - I was dreading having to call if I had questions. How does that service work exactly?

•It basically handles the waiting and calling for you so you don't have to sit on hold. They call you back when they get an actual person on the line. Saved me so much frustration.

make sure you file asap! there's a waiting week in washington but the sooner you file the sooner that week starts. don't wait thinking you need to have everything perfect

•What do you mean by waiting week? Do I not get paid for the first week?

Arnav Bengali
•There's a one-week waiting period where you won't receive benefits, but you still need to file your weekly claim for that week. It's just how the system works in Washington.

I'm going through this right now too. Filed three weeks ago and still waiting for my claim to be processed. It's been stuck in adjudication forever. Washington ESD is so slow with everything.

•Oh no, that's what I'm worried about. Did they tell you why it's taking so long?

•No explanation at all. Just says 'adjudication in progress' on my account. It's really frustrating when you need the money.

The key is to file your initial claim online at esd.wa.gov as soon as possible after your last day of work. You can file on Sunday through Friday, and the system is usually less busy early in the morning or late at night.

•Is there a best day of the week to file or does it not matter?

Sayid Hassan
•It doesn't matter for your initial claim, but for weekly claims you'll be assigned a specific day based on your last name. They'll tell you which day when you file.

Whatever you do, don't go to a physical office. They're mostly closed for in-person services anyway. Everything has to be done online through the Washington ESD website.

•Good to know - I was wondering if I should try to go somewhere in person.

Once you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to continue receiving benefits. This is also done through your SAW account. Don't miss a week or you could lose benefits for that period.

•How will I know when to file my weekly claims?

Arnav Bengali
•After you file your initial claim, they'll send you information about your assigned day. You can file weekly claims from Sunday through Saturday of your assigned week.

Also be prepared for the job search requirements. Washington requires you to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of your activities. This starts after your waiting week.

•What counts as a job search contact?

•Applying for jobs, contacting employers directly, attending job fairs, networking events. They have a list on the Washington ESD website of what qualifies.

I had trouble with the SAW system last year - kept getting error messages. If that happens to you, try a different browser or clear your cache. The system can be finicky sometimes.

•Thanks for the tip! I'll keep that in mind if I run into technical issues.

•Ugh, that doesn't sound fun. At least I know to set aside some time for it.

Make sure you have your bank information ready if you want direct deposit. It's much faster than waiting for a check in the mail.

•Good point, I definitely want direct deposit. Do I set that up during the initial filing?

•Yes, there's a section for payment method during the application. Just have your routing and account numbers ready.

One more thing - if you have any questions about your claim status or need help with issues, that Claimyr service mentioned earlier is really helpful. I used it when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD about an adjudication issue. Much better than spending hours on hold.

•I'll definitely keep that in mind if I run into problems. Hopefully everything goes smoothly though.

Don't forget to keep records of everything! Save confirmation numbers, print out your claim summary, and keep track of all your job search activities. You might need them later.

•Great advice. I'll start a folder for all my unemployment paperwork.

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know that I finally got through to someone at Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Turns out my employer hadn't responded to their request for information, which was holding up my claim. The agent was able to escalate it for me.

•See, I told you Claimyr was worth it! So much better than trying to call on your own.

For the original poster - the most important thing is to file your initial claim at esd.wa.gov as soon as possible. Don't overthink it, you can always call later if you have questions. The sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving benefits.

Good luck with your claim! Just remember to file your weekly claims every week and keep up with the job search requirements. The system works if you follow the rules.

•Will do! I really appreciate everyone taking the time to help me understand the process.

One last tip - if you get denied for any reason, don't panic. You can appeal the decision. Washington ESD makes mistakes sometimes and appeals are pretty common.

Scarlett Forster
•Hopefully I won't need to worry about that, but good to know I have options if something goes wrong.

yeah and if you do need to appeal or have other issues, that claimyr thing is probably worth it. beats sitting on the phone all day trying to get through to someone

•I'll definitely keep it in mind. Thanks again everyone!

Welcome to the unemployment club! It's not fun but at least Washington has decent benefits compared to some states. Hope your claim goes through quickly and smoothly.
