Where to file for unemployment benefits in Washington state?
I just got laid off from my job last week and I'm completely lost on where to file for unemployment benefits. I've never done this before and I'm not sure if I go to a physical office or do it online. Can someone point me in the right direction? I heard something about Washington ESD but I don't know what that stands for or where to find it. Any help would be appreciated!

You need to go to the official Washington State Employment Security Department website at esd.wa.gov. Look for the 'File a Claim' button on the homepage. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked.

•Thank you! Do I need to have my pay stubs or can I just estimate my wages?
0 coins
Zoe Gonzalez
•It's better to have exact amounts if possible, but the system will also verify your wages with your employers. Having your last pay stub helps with accuracy.

Washington ESD stands for Employment Security Department - that's the state agency that handles unemployment insurance (UI) claims. You file everything online at esd.wa.gov. There's no need to go to a physical office unless you have special circumstances.

make sure you file as soon as possible after losing your job. there's no waiting period in washington but you want to get the process started right away since it can take a couple weeks to get your first payment

•Good to know, I was wondering if I should wait a few days to see if my employer calls me back

•No don't wait! File immediately. You can always stop claiming if you get called back to work, but if you delay filing you're just losing potential benefit weeks.

Thank you! I was worried I'd have to take time off job searching to visit an office somewhere.

The application process itself is pretty straightforward once you're on the right website. You'll create an account on SecureAccess Washington (SAW) first, then use that to access the unemployment system. The whole application takes maybe 30-45 minutes if you have all your employment info ready.

•I remember that SAW login being confusing when I filed last year. Is that the same as the ESD login?
0 coins
Alexis Robinson
•Yes, SecureAccess Washington is the single sign-on system for all state services including Washington ESD unemployment. Once you create that account you use it to access your unemployment claim.

yeah the online system is pretty straightforward once you get started, just make sure you have all your employment info ready

Here's the step-by-step process: 1) Go to esd.wa.gov 2) Click 'Apply for Benefits' 3) Create your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account if you don't have one 4) Complete the initial application with your employment history from the last 18 months 5) Submit required documents. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment details including dates worked and wages earned.

This is super helpful! Do I need pay stubs or just the general employment information?

I struggled with getting through to Washington ESD when I had questions during my application process. The phone lines are always busy and I kept getting disconnected. If you run into issues like that, I found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helped me actually reach an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Interesting, I'll keep that in mind in case I can't get through on my own. How much does something like that cost?
0 coins
Chloe Mitchell
•I don't remember the exact price but it was worth it for me since I was stuck for weeks trying to resolve an issue with my claim. Much better than spending hours on hold.

•Never heard of that service before but the phone situation with Washington ESD is definitely frustrating. Might be worth checking out if the normal routes don't work.

One thing they don't tell you upfront is that you'll need to do job search activities every week to keep getting benefits. In Washington you need to make at least 3 job contacts per week and keep a log of your search activities. Start thinking about that now so you're prepared.
0 coins
Avery Flores
•Oh wow I had no idea about the job search requirement. What counts as a job contact?
0 coins
Natalie Wang
•Applying for jobs, contacting employers directly, attending job fairs, networking events. You log everything in your WorkSourceWA account. The requirements are pretty specific so read the guidelines carefully.

•The job search thing tripped me up too when I first filed. Make sure you understand it before you start claiming or you could get disqualified.

You'll need the basic info for the application, but keep your pay stubs handy in case they ask for verification later during adjudication.

I tried calling Washington ESD to ask questions before filing but could never get through. The phone lines are always busy and I kept getting disconnected. Super frustrating when you just need basic info!

I had the same problem! I actually found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. They have this demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me hours of calling and getting nowhere.

MAKE SURE YOU'RE ON THE RIGHT WEBSITE! There are scam sites that look like the real Washington ESD site. Only use esd.wa.gov - if it asks for payment upfront or looks suspicious, it's fake. The state never charges fees to file for unemployment.
0 coins
Avery Flores
•Thanks for the warning! I'll make sure to double check the URL before entering any personal information.

Ryan Young
•Yes this is super important. I almost fell for one of those fake sites when I was desperate to file my claim. Always verify you're on the official state website.

The system will ask you about the reason you're unemployed. Since you said you were laid off, that should be straightforward - just select 'lack of work' or similar option. If you were fired or quit, the process can be more complicated with potential adjudication.
0 coins
Avery Flores
•What's adjudication? That sounds scary.
0 coins
Sophia Clark
•It's just when Washington ESD needs to investigate the circumstances of your job separation to determine if you're eligible for benefits. For layoffs it's usually quick, but for fires or quits it can take weeks.

Katherine Harris
•I went through adjudication last year and it took almost a month. They contacted my employer and asked for documentation. Not fun but it worked out in the end.

don't forget you'll need to file your weekly claim every week even before your application is fully processed. mark your calendar for sunday-saturday claim weeks. if you miss a week you lose that week's benefits permanently
0 coins
Avery Flores
•So I need to keep filing weekly even if I haven't heard back about my initial application being approved?
0 coins
Madison Allen
•exactly. the weekly claims establish your ongoing eligibility. you can't go back and claim weeks you missed even if your initial claim gets approved later

I just went through this process myself two months ago. The hardest part was gathering all the employment information going back 18 months. I had to contact a couple of old employers to get exact dates and addresses. Start with your most recent job and work backwards.
0 coins
Avery Flores
•Did you have any issues with employers that had closed or moved?
0 coins
Joshua Wood
•Yeah one of my previous employers had closed but I just put the last known address and explained in the comments section. Washington ESD was able to verify the wages through their records anyway.

Justin Evans
•Same thing happened to me. As long as you provide what information you have and explain any gaps, they can usually figure it out on their end.

Emily Parker
After you submit your initial application, you'll get a determination letter in the mail within about 10 days telling you if you're approved and what your weekly benefit amount will be. Don't panic if it takes the full 10 days - that's normal processing time.
0 coins
Avery Flores
•Is there a way to check the status online while I'm waiting for the letter?
0 coins
Emily Parker
•Yes, once you have your SAW account set up you can log into the unemployment system and see your claim status. It will show pending, approved, or if there are any issues that need attention.

Make sure you file as soon as possible! There's a waiting week where you won't get paid, and if you delay filing you could lose out on benefits for weeks you were eligible. Don't wait thinking you need to have everything perfect - you can always provide additional information later.

Ezra Collins
Washington has a one week waiting period before you can receive your first payment, but you still need to file that first week. So don't expect money for at least 2-3 weeks after filing - week 1 is the waiting period, week 2 gets processed, week 3 is when you might see your first deposit.
0 coins
Victoria Scott
•Wait I thought Washington eliminated the waiting week during COVID?
0 coins
Ezra Collins
•You're right, they did temporarily waive it but I think that ended. I'd double check the current policy on the Washington ESD website to be sure.
0 coins
Zoe Gonzalez
•The waiting week is currently waived in Washington. You should be eligible for benefits starting with your first claimed week if everything else checks out.

I had such a hard time reaching anyone at Washington ESD when I had questions about my claim status. Spent literally hours on hold and kept getting disconnected. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got through to an agent the same day. Definitely recommend it if you hit roadblocks.

Good point! I was worried about making mistakes on the application but I guess it's better to file now and fix things later.

Exactly right. The most important thing is getting your claim date established. You can't backdate benefits in most cases.

also dont forget you have to file weekly claims to actually get paid. its not automatic after the first application

Make sure you have a reliable way to receive mail because a lot of important communications still come by postal mail. If you move during your claim period, update your address immediately or you could miss critical notices.
0 coins
Avery Flores
•Can I set up email notifications instead of waiting for mail?
0 coins
Daniel Rogers
•Some notifications come by email but the official determination letters and legal notices still come by mail. You can't opt out of the postal mail unfortunately.

One last tip - if you worked in multiple states in the past 18 months, you might need to file an interstate claim. Washington can help coordinate with other states to combine your wages, but mention this during your application if it applies to you.

Avery Flores
•I only worked in Washington so this shouldn't apply to me, but good to know for others reading this thread.

•Interstate claims can get complicated. If anyone reading this worked in multiple states, definitely mention it upfront rather than trying to figure it out later.

Weekly claims are due every Sunday for the previous week. You'll report job search activities, any work performed, and any income earned. This is how Washington ESD knows you're still unemployed and eligible.

Sofia Gutierrez
The whole system is confusing honestly. I filed 2 weeks ago and my claim is still in 'adjudication' whatever that means. No one explains anything clearly.
0 coins
Giovanni Rossi
Adjudication means Washington ESD is reviewing your claim to determine eligibility. It's normal for claims to go through this process, especially if there are any questions about your separation from employment or work history.
0 coins
Sofia Gutierrez
How long does that usually take? I'm starting to panic about bills.
0 coins
Amara Oluwaseyi
Adjudication can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks depending on complexity. If you need to speak with someone about your specific case, that's where services like Claimyr can really help get you connected to an actual person.

One thing I wish someone had told me - gather ALL your employment information before you start the application. I had to stop halfway through because I couldn't remember exact dates from a job I had 8 months ago.

yeah and if you had multiple jobs in the last year make sure you include all of them, even part time ones

Quick heads up - after you file your initial claim, you'll probably get some mail from Washington ESD with important information. Don't ignore it! Some people think it's just confirmation letters but sometimes there are requests for additional documentation.
0 coins
Liam McConnell
Thanks for the warning! I'll make sure to read everything carefully.

And respond to any requests quickly! Missing deadlines can delay or even disqualify your claim.

Is there any way to check the status of your application online? I filed but I have no idea whats happening with it
0 coins
Giovanni Rossi
Yes, log into your account at esd.wa.gov and check your claim status. You can also see if there are any outstanding issues that need to be resolved.
0 coins
Sofia Gutierrez
I tried that but it just says 'pending' with no other details. Super helpful, right?
0 coins
Dylan Mitchell
That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr to get through to someone. The online portal doesn't always give you the full picture of what's happening with your claim.

just wanted to add that you need to be actively looking for work to keep getting benefits. they require 3 job search activities per week and you have to keep a log
0 coins
Liam McConnell
What counts as a job search activity?
0 coins
Amara Oluwaseyi
Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, informational interviews, or working with WorkSource (the state job service). You'll need to log these activities and be prepared to provide details if asked.

One more important point - if you're receiving any severance pay, vacation payout, or other compensation from your former employer, make sure to report this when filing. It can affect your benefit amount or delay payments.
0 coins
Liam McConnell
I am getting some vacation payout. Do I report that during the initial application or on the weekly claims?
0 coins
Dmitry Petrov
Report it during initial application and then again on any weekly claim for the week you actually receive the payment. Be accurate about dates and amounts.

honestly the whole unemployment system is designed to make you give up. so many hoops to jump through and then they act like theyre doing you a favor

I understand the frustration, but remember that unemployment insurance is there to help people get back on their feet. The requirements exist to prevent fraud and ensure benefits go to those who need them.

If you get stuck at any point, don't give up! The system can be confusing but the benefits are worth it if you're eligible. I was unemployed for 4 months last year and UI benefits really helped bridge the gap.
