Where do you go for unemployment benefits in Washington - confused about the process
I just got laid off from my retail job last week and I'm completely lost about where to start with unemployment. I've never filed before and honestly don't even know what agency handles this stuff in Washington. Do I go to a physical office somewhere or is it all online now? My friend mentioned something about Washington ESD but I'm not sure if that's right. Can someone point me in the right direction? I'm getting stressed about bills piling up and need to get this figured out ASAP.

Washington ESD (Employment Security Department) is who you need to file with. Everything is done online through their website at esd.wa.gov. You don't need to go anywhere in person unless there's a specific issue that requires it. Just create an account and file your initial application there.

•Thank you! So there's no physical offices I need to visit at all?

•Nope, all online now. Much easier than the old days of waiting in lines at the unemployment office.

•What do you mean? Is it hard to reach them if I have questions?

•You'll spend hours on hold and probably get hung up on. It's brutal trying to talk to an actual person there.

I had the same confusion when I first filed. Washington ESD handles all unemployment insurance in the state. Start at esd.wa.gov and click on 'File for benefits.' You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months. Make sure you have all your previous employer information handy including dates of employment and reason for separation.

•Do I need pay stubs or just the basic employment info?

Mason Lopez
•Just the basic info for the initial application. They might ask for pay stubs later if there are any questions about your wages.

•I'd gather pay stubs anyway just in case. Better to have them ready than scramble later.

If you run into issues reaching Washington ESD by phone (which you probably will), I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me literally hours of calling and getting disconnected.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true with how everyone says the phones are impossible.

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got connected to an ESD agent in like 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own.

•Never heard of this but might be worth trying if the regular number doesn't work.

WASHINGTON ESD IS A JOKE! Been trying to get through to them for weeks about my claim being stuck in adjudication. Their system is broken and nobody cares. You file online but then when something goes wrong you're just stuck.

Reina Salazar
•That's terrifying. What happens if my claim gets stuck like yours?

•You wait and wait and wait. Meanwhile bills pile up and you have no idea when you'll see any money.

•Adjudication issues can be frustrating but they do resolve them eventually. The process just takes time to review complicated cases.

To directly answer your question - Washington Employment Security Department (ESD) is the agency that handles unemployment benefits in our state. You file online at esd.wa.gov. There used to be physical WorkSource offices but most unemployment services are handled digitally now. You'll also need to register with WorkSourceWA.com for job search requirements once your claim is approved.

•Wait, there are job search requirements? What does that mean exactly?

Vera Visnjic
•You have to actively look for work and log your job search activities. Usually 3 job contacts per week minimum.

just to add to what everyone else said - make sure you file ASAP. there's a waiting week so you won't get paid for the first week anyway, but the sooner you file the sooner the process starts

•Good point, I'll get on that today. Thanks for the heads up about the waiting week.

One more tip - when you're filling out the application, be very careful about how you answer the reason for separation question. If you put 'quit' instead of 'laid off' it can cause delays or disqualification issues.

Reina Salazar
•I was definitely laid off due to store closure, so I should be good there.

•Yeah that's important. I accidentally put the wrong separation reason and it caused a whole mess with adjudication.

Washington ESD website can be slow sometimes, especially on Sundays when everyone's filing their weekly claims. If it's acting up just try again later.

•Good to know, I'll avoid peak times if possible.

Following up on the Claimyr thing I mentioned earlier - it's especially helpful if you need to check on claim status or resolve any issues that come up. The regular ESD customer service line is basically unusable most of the time.

•How much does something like that cost though?

Jake Sinclair
•I don't remember the exact amount but it was worth it to actually talk to someone instead of wasting entire days redialing.

Once you get your application submitted, you'll get a determination letter in the mail within 1-2 weeks if everything is straightforward. Keep checking your online account for updates and make sure you file your weekly claims every week even while waiting for approval.

Reina Salazar
•So I need to keep filing weekly even before I'm approved?
0 coins
Mason Lopez
•Yes, you need to maintain your claim by filing weekly. You won't get paid until approved but you need to keep the claim active.

Make sure you have a good email address that you check regularly. Washington ESD sends important notices through their online messaging system and you'll get email notifications.

Still think the whole system is broken but at least now you know where to start. Just be prepared for frustration if anything goes wrong with your claim.

•Not everyone has problems. My claim went through smooth as butter last year.

•You were lucky then. Plenty of us get stuck in their broken system for months.

Don't let the negative comments scare you too much. Yes, the system has issues, but millions of claims get processed successfully. Just follow the instructions carefully and you should be fine.

•That's reassuring, thank you. I'm feeling more confident about tackling this now.

One last thing - if you worked in multiple states recently, you might need to file in a different state depending on where you earned the most wages. But if all your recent work was in Washington, then Washington ESD is definitely the right place.

•All my work was here in Washington so I should be good to go with ESD.

good luck with everything! the initial filing part is actually pretty straightforward, it's just if you need help later that becomes a nightmare

•Thanks! Hopefully I won't need to call them but good to know about the Claimyr option if I do.

Washington ESD also has some helpful YouTube videos that walk through the application process if you're more of a visual learner. Might be worth checking those out before you start.

You've got this! The hardest part is just getting started. Once you have your account set up and initial claim filed, the weekly maintenance is pretty routine.

Welcome to the unemployment club nobody wants to join! At least Washington's benefits are decent compared to some other states.

Final reminder about that Claimyr service - definitely bookmark it just in case. When you're desperate to reach ESD and nothing else works, having that option available is a lifesaver.
