How do I file unemployment benefits with Washington ESD - complete beginner
I just got laid off yesterday and have no idea how to file unemployment benefits. I've never done this before and I'm completely lost. Do I go to a physical office or is everything online now? What documents do I need? How long does the whole process take? I really need help figuring out how to file unemployment with Washington ESD because I have bills coming up and I'm starting to panic.

Everything is done online through the Washington ESD website now. You'll go to esd.wa.gov and create an account through SecureAccess Washington (SAW). You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment information for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, dates worked, and reason for separation.

•Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or will they verify my wages automatically?

Lena Kowalski
•They'll verify wages through employer reports, but having your pay stubs handy can help if there are any discrepancies or missing quarters.

File as soon as possible! There's a waiting week but you want to get your claim started right away. The online application takes about 30-45 minutes if you have all your info ready.

•What's a waiting week? Does that mean I won't get paid for the first week?
0 coins
DeShawn Washington
•Exactly - the first week you're eligible is unpaid, but you still need to file your weekly claim for that week to establish your claim.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone to ask questions during the application process, I found claimyr.com really helpful. They have a service that helps you actually reach a live agent instead of getting the busy signal or waiting on hold forever. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•That sounds too good to be true - does it actually work?

•I was skeptical too but it got me through to someone in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying to call for days. Really saved me when I had questions about my work history dates.

Make sure you have EXACT dates - not just months but actual start and end dates for each job. Washington ESD is picky about this stuff and if you're off they'll put your claim in adjudication which means delays.

•What if I don't remember the exact dates? I worked at my last job for like 2 years.

•Check old tax documents, W-2s, or call your HR department. It's worth getting the exact dates to avoid problems later.

•I put approximate dates and it was fine, they didn't put mine in adjudication

OMG this system is so confusing! I've been trying to figure this out for a week and I keep getting different answers about what documents I need. Some people say I need a separation notice from my employer but others say I don't??

Lena Kowalski
•You don't NEED a separation notice to file, but if your employer gave you one it can be helpful to have. The main thing is knowing your last day worked and reason for separation.

•Ok thank you that makes me feel better. I was worried I couldn't file without some special paperwork.

Just a heads up - after you file your initial claim you'll need to file weekly claims every week to get paid. Don't forget to do this or you'll miss payments!

•How do I file weekly claims? Is that online too?

Jamal Brown
•Yes, through the same SAW account. You'll answer questions about any work you did that week and whether you were able and available for work.

Also be prepared for job search requirements. You'll need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. They can audit this so don't skip it.

•What counts as a job search contact?

DeShawn Washington
•Applying for jobs, contacting employers directly, networking events, career fairs. Just make sure you document everything with dates and details.

•I think it's actually 2 job contacts per week now, not 3. Rules changed recently.

The whole Washington ESD system is a nightmare. I filed 3 weeks ago and my claim is still pending adjudication. No one can tell me why or when it'll be resolved. Prepare for frustration.

Toot-n-Mighty
•That's terrifying. What causes adjudication?
0 coins
Giovanni Rossi
•Could be anything - wage discrepancies, questions about why you left your job, identity verification issues. It's like a black box.

•This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier - when you're stuck in adjudication you really need to talk to someone to find out what's holding things up.

I filed last month and it was pretty straightforward. Took about 2 weeks to get my first payment after filing. Just make sure you file your weekly claims on time.

•That's reassuring! Did you have any issues with the online system?

Aiden O'Connor
•Not really, just had to clear my browser cache once when it was acting glitchy.

Don't forget you might be eligible for other programs too depending on your situation - like if you're going back to school there's training benefits available.

•Good point, I hadn't thought about training programs. Where do I find info about those?

•Check the WorkSource centers in your area or look on the Washington ESD website under training and education resources.

Wait, I'm so confused about one thing - do I file unemployment the week I got laid off or the week after? I got laid off on a Wednesday.
0 coins
Lena Kowalski
•You file for the week ending after your last day of work. So if you worked Wednesday, you'd claim that week and then start your unemployment claim the following week.

•Thank you! That was really bothering me.

Pro tip: take screenshots of everything when you file. If there are issues later you'll want proof of what you submitted and when.

•Great advice! I'll definitely do that.

I keep hearing horror stories about people waiting months for benefits. Is there anything you can do to speed up the process?

Lena Kowalski
•Best thing is to be accurate and complete on your initial application. Missing or wrong information causes most delays.

•And if you do run into issues, having a way to actually reach Washington ESD helps a lot. That's where services like Claimyr come in handy - getting through to resolve problems quickly instead of waiting weeks.

Does anyone know if you can file unemployment if you're still working part-time? I got my hours cut way down but I'm still technically employed.
0 coins
Lena Kowalski
•Yes, you can file for partial unemployment if your hours or wages were reduced. You'll report your earnings each week and they'll calculate a partial benefit.

•That's a relief, I wasn't sure if I qualified.

This has been so helpful everyone! I feel much more confident about filing now. Going to gather all my employment info tonight and file tomorrow morning.

One more thing - make sure your contact information is current in your SAW account. They send important notices through that system and if you miss them it can cause problems.

•Good reminder, I'll double check my email and phone number are right.

I wish someone had told me about the job search requirements upfront. I didn't realize how important it was to keep detailed records until I got audited.

•What happened during the audit?

•They asked for detailed job search logs for the past 8 weeks. Luckily I had most of it but it was stressful trying to reconstruct missing information.

The whole process seems overwhelming but honestly once you get through the initial filing it's pretty routine. Weekly claims take like 5 minutes once you get used to it.

•That's encouraging! I was worried it would be complicated every week.

Just wanted to add - if you're a veteran there are additional resources available through WorkSource. Worth checking out if that applies to you.

Washington ESD customer service is basically impossible to reach by normal means so definitely save that Claimyr info for later if you need help. Wish I'd known about it sooner.

•I bookmarked it just in case. Hopefully I won't need it but good to have options.

Remember that your benefit amount is based on your highest earning quarter in the past year, so if you had some really good months that will help your weekly benefit amount.

•Interesting, I didn't know it was calculated that way. Thanks for all the help everyone!
