How do you file unemployment with Washington ESD - complete beginner needs help
I just got laid off yesterday and have no idea how to file unemployment with Washington ESD. I've never done this before and feeling pretty overwhelmed. Do I need to go somewhere in person or is it all online? What documents do I need to have ready? How long does it take to get approved? Any help would be appreciated - I'm starting to panic about bills coming due.

Everything is done online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license or ID, and employment information for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, dates worked, and reason for separation. Don't panic - the process is pretty straightforward once you get started.

•Thank you! Do I need to wait a certain amount of time after being laid off or can I file right away?

•You can file immediately after your last day of work. Actually, you should file as soon as possible because there's a waiting week before benefits start.

Just went through this myself last month. The online application takes about 30-45 minutes if you have all your info ready. Make sure you have exact dates of employment and your last employer's FEIN number if possible.

•Where do I find the FEIN number? Is that something HR would have given me?

•It's usually on your W-2 or paystub. If you don't have it, Washington ESD can look it up but it might slow down processing.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when I had questions during my application. If you run into issues and can't reach them by phone, I found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helped me get connected to an actual person. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Interesting, I'll keep that in mind in case I get stuck. Hopefully the online process goes smoothly though.

•Never heard of that service but good to know there are options if the phone lines are jammed like usual.

ugh the washington esd website is so confusing!! took me like 3 tries to figure out where to actually start the application. make sure you create your SecureAccess Washington account first

•What's SecureAccess Washington? Is that different from the regular Washington ESD site?

Roger Romero
•SecureAccess Washington (SAW) is the login system for most Washington state services including unemployment. You'll create that account first, then use it to access your Washington ESD account.

The whole system is a nightmare. I filed 3 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything back. Just says 'claim under review' with no timeline.

•That's scary. Is there anything you can do to check on the status?

•I keep trying to call but can never get through. Might try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier.

•Some claims go into adjudication if there are questions about your separation. It can take several weeks but you should eventually get a determination letter.

Here's the step-by-step process: 1) Go to esd.wa.gov and click 'Apply for Benefits' 2) Create your SecureAccess Washington account if you don't have one 3) Complete the online application with all your employment history 4) Wait for your monetary determination letter 5) Start filing weekly claims once you receive it. The whole initial process usually takes 2-3 weeks.

•This is super helpful! Do I need to file weekly claims even if my application is still being processed?
0 coins
Roger Romero
•Yes, you need to file weekly claims for every week you want benefits, even while your initial claim is being processed. If you don't file, you won't get paid for those weeks.

Make sure you have your bank account info ready for direct deposit. Much faster than waiting for checks in the mail.

Danielle Mays
•Good tip! How long does direct deposit usually take once approved?

Micah Trail
•Usually 2-3 business days after you file your weekly claim.

also dont forget you have to do job search stuff once your claim is approved. think its like 3 job contacts per week or something

Danielle Mays
•Job search requirements? What exactly do I need to do?
0 coins
Roger Romero
•You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. This includes applying for jobs, contacting employers directly, or attending job fairs. WorkSourceWA has resources to help with this.

One thing that caught me off guard - they ask for your reason for separation in detail. Be honest but don't overthink it. If you were laid off due to lack of work, just say that clearly.

•That's exactly my situation - company downsizing. Should I mention anything about performance or just stick to lack of work?

Anna Kerber
•Just stick to the facts - company downsizing/lack of work. Don't bring up anything that could be interpreted as misconduct on your part.

The application asks for wages from all employers in the last 18 months. If you only worked one job, it's simple, but if you had multiple jobs you need info for all of them.

•I only had the one job for the past 2 years, so that should be straightforward at least.

Just a heads up - Washington ESD is really backed up right now. I filed 4 weeks ago and just got my first payment. The waiting is the worst part but hang in there.

•4 weeks?! How do people survive that long without income?

Nia Watson
•Yeah it's rough. I had to borrow money from family. The system is overwhelmed but benefits are retroactive once approved.

If you do run into delays or have questions about your claim status, seriously consider using Claimyr. I was skeptical at first but they actually got me through to a Washington ESD representative who cleared up my adjudication issue in 10 minutes. Would have saved me weeks of stress if I'd known about it earlier.

•How does that service work exactly? Do they just call for you or something?

Niko Ramsey
•They handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when they reach an actual person. Way better than spending hours on hold yourself.

Whatever you do, don't give up if you get denied initially. You can appeal within 30 days and many people win their appeals. The system makes mistakes all the time.

Danielle Mays
•Good to know there's an appeal process. Hopefully I won't need it but thanks for the info.

One more important thing - make sure you file your weekly claims every week on time. The system is pretty unforgiving about late filings. You can file online starting Sunday for the previous week.

•What happens if I forget to file one week?
0 coins
Roger Romero
•You lose that week's benefits. There's no makeup filing for missed weeks except in very limited circumstances.

Keep copies of everything - your application, any letters from Washington ESD, your job search log, everything. You never know when you might need to reference something.

•Will do. This is all really helpful, thank you everyone!

good luck! the first time is scary but once you get through the initial application its mostly just the weekly filing routine

Don't forget to report any part-time work or income when you file your weekly claims. Even small amounts need to be reported or you could end up with an overpayment issue later.

The Washington ESD website has a lot of good information if you poke around. There's a whole section explaining the process step by step.

Danielle Mays
•I'll definitely spend some time reading through that before I start the application.

Last tip - if you're having trouble with the online system, try using a different browser or clearing your cache. The website can be finicky sometimes.

•Good thinking. I'll try Chrome instead of Safari if I run into issues.

You've got this! The application process might seem overwhelming but thousands of people go through it successfully every week. Take it one step at a time and don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it.

•Thank you so much everyone! This thread has been incredibly helpful. I'm going to start the application tomorrow morning when I'm fresh and focused.
