How do you file for unemployment in Washington - first time and totally lost
I just got laid off yesterday from my warehouse job and have no idea how to file for unemployment. I've never done this before and honestly feeling pretty overwhelmed. I know I need to go through Washington ESD but I don't even know where to start. Do I need to have specific documents ready? How long does it take to get approved? Any help would be really appreciated because I'm already stressed about bills coming up.

Sorry to hear about your job loss. First step is to go to esd.wa.gov and create an account. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment info from the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked. The sooner you file the better since there's a waiting week before benefits can start.

•Thanks! Do I need pay stubs or just the basic employer info?

Malik Jackson
•Just the basic info for the initial application. They'll verify wages through their system. Keep your pay stubs handy though in case they need them later.

The online application is pretty straightforward but make sure you answer everything accurately. Any mistakes can cause delays in processing your claim.

•What kind of mistakes should I watch out for?

•Main things are getting your employment dates wrong, not reporting all employers from the last 18 months, or being unclear about why you left each job.

Filing the initial claim is just the beginning. You'll need to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. Don't skip a week even if you haven't been paid yet because you could lose benefits.

•How do I file the weekly claims?

•Same website, there's a section for weekly claims. You report any work you did, money you earned, and confirm you're still looking for work.

•And you have to do job search activities every week. They require at least 3 job search activities per week now.

If you run into issues getting through to Washington ESD by phone, I recently discovered claimyr.com which helped me connect with an agent when I was stuck. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•How does that work exactly? Is it legit?

Freya Christensen
•Yeah it's legitimate. They basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent is available. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked.

•I might need to try that too. I've been trying to call Washington ESD for two weeks about my claim status with no luck.

make sure you have your banking info ready too for direct deposit setup. otherwise you'll have to wait for a debit card which takes longer

•Good point, I'll grab my account info before I start the application.

One more important thing - when you file, you'll choose a weekly claim day (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday). Pick one that works for your schedule because you'll need to file every week on that same day.

Emma Thompson
•Does it matter which day I pick?

Malik Jackson
•Not really, just consistency matters. I do Sundays because it's easier to remember at the start of each week.

•I picked Wednesday and it works well for me. Gives me time to do job search stuff earlier in the week.

The whole process is honestly pretty stressful the first time. Don't feel bad if you're confused - the Washington ESD website can be confusing to navigate.

•Thanks, that makes me feel better. I was worried I was just being dumb about it.

•You're definitely not dumb! I had to call for help when I first filed and even the agent said lots of people find it confusing.

After you submit your application, you should get a determination letter within a few days telling you if you're approved and what your weekly benefit amount will be. Keep an eye on your mail and your online account.

•What if I get denied?

•You can appeal the decision if you disagree with it. The letter will explain how to file an appeal if needed.

Don't forget about the job search requirements! You need to register with WorkSourceWA and keep a log of your job search activities. They can audit you at any time.

•What counts as job search activities?

•Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, skills training, even some online job search activities count. Just keep detailed records.

I filed about 6 months ago and the hardest part was getting through to someone when I had questions. Definitely try that Claimyr service someone mentioned if you need to talk to an agent.

•How long did it take for your first payment?

Luca Russo
•About 3 weeks total from when I filed to when I got my first payment. There's a waiting week plus processing time.

Just want to add - be completely honest about why you left your job. If they find out later that you weren't truthful, it can cause major problems including having to pay benefits back.

•I was laid off due to company downsizing so that should be straightforward.

•Yeah that's a clear-cut case. Just make sure you document it correctly in the application.

The Washington ESD system has gotten better over the years but it's still not perfect. Be patient with the process and don't panic if there are delays.

•That's good advice. I tend to worry about everything so I'll try to stay calm.

One thing that helped me was printing out the confirmation page after I submitted my application. Good to have a record that you filed on a specific date.

•Smart idea, I'll definitely do that.

You got this! Filing for unemployment is never fun but it's a safety net that's there for a reason. Take it one step at a time and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

Just remember to keep filing those weekly claims every week once you get approved. Missing even one week can mess up your benefits.

The whole unemployment system can feel overwhelming but you'll get the hang of it. Most people do fine once they understand the basic requirements.

•Feeling much more confident about it now thanks to all the advice here.

Make sure you understand the difference between regular unemployment and other programs. Since you were laid off from regular employment, you'll file for regular UI benefits through Washington ESD.

Emma Thompson
•Yeah that makes sense. I was a regular W-2 employee so it should be straightforward.

Last thing - keep all your documents organized. Pay stubs, termination letter, any correspondence from Washington ESD. You never know when you might need them.

•Will do. I'll start a folder for all the unemployment stuff.

Good luck with everything! Losing a job sucks but at least Washington has decent unemployment benefits compared to some states.
