How to collect unemployment - Washington ESD claim filing help needed
I just got laid off from my warehouse job after 2 years and I have no idea how to collect unemployment benefits. Everyone keeps telling me different things about the process. I've never filed for unemployment before and I'm honestly confused about where to even start with Washington ESD. Do I need to apply right away? What documents do I need? How long does it take to get approved? Any help would be appreciated because I'm already stressing about bills.

First thing - file your claim ASAP! You can do it online at esd.wa.gov. You'll need your social security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months. Don't wait because there's a waiting week before benefits start.

•Thanks! Do I need to know exact dates of employment or just approximate?

Naila Gordon
•Try to be as exact as possible. Have your last pay stub ready - that helps with dates and wages.

The whole process is pretty straightforward once you get started. After you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to get paid. Each weekly claim asks about any work you did that week and any job search activities.

•How many jobs do you have to apply for each week? I heard it was 3 but someone told me it might be more now.

Cynthia Love
•It's 3 job search activities per week in Washington. Can be applications, networking, interviews, etc. Just keep good records.

Honestly the hardest part is getting through to someone at Washington ESD if you have questions. I spent hours trying to call them when my claim got stuck. Found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent - check out claimyr.com. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach Washington ESD.

•Yeah I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Way better than sitting on hold for hours and getting hung up on.

make sure you have your last employers info too - name address phone number. they might contact them to verify stuff

•What if my employer contests my claim? I'm worried they might say I was fired for cause even though it was just layoffs.

•If they contest it goes to adjudication. Washington ESD will investigate and make a determination. Just be honest about the circumstances.

The system is SO BROKEN. I filed three weeks ago and my claim is still pending adjudication with no explanation. Can't get through to anyone, no updates, nothing. Meanwhile bills are piling up.

•Adjudication can take time especially if there are any issues with your work history or separation reason. Frustrating but unfortunately normal.

•Three weeks though? That's ridiculous. I'm about to lose my apartment.

•This is exactly why I used Claimyr - got through to someone who could actually check my claim status instead of just waiting in the dark.

You'll also need to register with WorkSourceWA for the job search requirement. Don't forget that step or they can disqualify you.

Ben Cooper
•Is that separate from the unemployment application? Another website I need to sign up for?

Kara Yoshida
•Yes it's separate - worksourcewa.com. You need to create a profile there within a certain timeframe after filing your UI claim.

How much can you expect to get? I made about $18/hour at my last job working full time.

•It's based on your earnings from the last 4 quarters. Maximum weekly benefit in Washington is around $1015 but most people get less. There's a calculator on the Washington ESD website.

Darren Brooks
•Thanks, I'll check that out. Hopefully it's enough to cover rent at least.

Pro tip: screenshot everything when you file your weekly claims. The system glitches sometimes and you want proof you submitted on time.

•Good idea! How often do system problems happen?
0 coins
Philip Cowan
•More often than they should. Better safe than sorry when it comes to your benefits.

I'm in a similar situation - got laid off last month. Still waiting for my first payment. The waiting is the worst part honestly.

•How long has it been? I'm going crazy not knowing what's happening with my claim.

•Filed 4 weeks ago, finally got approved last week. First payment should come this week hopefully.

Don't forget about taxes! Unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them later.

Ben Cooper
•Oh man I didn't even think about taxes. Should I have them withhold or just deal with it next year?
0 coins
Caesar Grant
•Depends on your situation but I'd recommend having them withhold 10%. Easier than owing a big chunk later.

The job search thing is actually not that bad once you get into a routine. I just apply to 3-4 jobs every Sunday and log them all at once.

Darren Brooks
•Where do you log them? In the weekly claim?
0 coins
Lena Schultz
•Yeah when you file your weekly claim it asks about your job search activities. Just need dates, company names, and what you did.

Ugh I remember when I first filed - so confusing! The website isn't very user friendly. Just take it step by step and don't panic if it seems overwhelming.

Ben Cooper
•Yeah I'm already feeling overwhelmed just thinking about it. But I guess I don't have a choice.

•It gets easier once you do it a few times. The initial claim is the hardest part.

Another thing about Claimyr - they were super helpful when I had questions about my eligibility. The Washington ESD website has the basic info but sometimes you need to talk to an actual person who knows the system.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already broke from being unemployed.

Rosie Harper
•Way less than I expected for what you get. Check their website for current pricing. Worth it to avoid the stress of trying to reach Washington ESD on your own.

Make sure you understand the difference between being able and available vs actively seeking work. They're both requirements but different things.
0 coins
Ben Cooper
•What's the difference? I thought they were the same thing.
0 coins
Mae Bennett
•Able and available means you're physically and mentally capable of working and available for work. Actively seeking means you're actually looking for jobs. You need both.

If you worked for a temp agency or had multiple jobs, make sure to list ALL of them in your claim. Don't leave anything out.

Ben Cooper
•I only had one job but worked some overtime. Do I need to mention that specifically?
0 coins
Beatrice Marshall
•No just list the employer. They'll get your wage info from your employer anyway.

been there done that. the whole system sucks but you gotta play the game. file every week on time and dont give them any excuse to mess with your benefits

Mateusius Townsend
•Exactly! One little mistake and they make your life hell trying to fix it.

•That's why it's important to be accurate from the start. Take your time with the initial application.

Also heads up - if you do any kind of work while collecting unemployment, even just a few hours, you HAVE to report it. They will find out and it's considered fraud if you don't report it.
0 coins
Ben Cooper
•What if it's just like helping a friend move and they give me $50? Do I need to report that?
0 coins
Dallas Villalobos
•Technically yes if it's work for payment. Better to over-report than under-report when it comes to Washington ESD.

The good news is once you get approved and into the routine, it's pretty manageable. File your weekly claim, do your job searches, and the money comes. Just gotta get through the initial hurdles.
0 coins
Ben Cooper
•That's reassuring. I was worried it would be complicated the whole time.
0 coins
Reina Salazar
•Nah once you're in the system it's pretty automated. The hard part is getting started and dealing with any issues that come up.

One last thing - keep ALL your paperwork! Separation notice from your employer, confirmation numbers from filing claims, everything. You never know when Washington ESD might ask for documentation.

Ben Cooper
•Should I scan everything or are photos on my phone okay?
0 coins
Saanvi Krishnaswami
•Either works but make sure they're clear and readable. I keep both physical copies and digital backups just in case.

Thanks everyone for all the advice! This has been super helpful. Going to file my claim tonight and get started on this whole process. Wish me luck!
