How do I collect unemployment in Washington - completely lost on where to start
I just got laid off yesterday and I have no clue how to collect unemployment. I've never been unemployed before and I'm honestly panicking about paying my bills. Do I just go to the Washington ESD website? What documents do I need? How long does it take to get approved? Any help would be appreciated because I'm completely overwhelmed right now.

First step is to file your initial claim at esd.wa.gov as soon as possible. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates of employment. Don't wait - there's a waiting period anyway so file immediately.

•Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or just the basic info about where I worked?

Donna Cline
•Just the basic employment info for the initial filing. Keep your pay stubs handy though - Washington ESD might request them later during processing.

been there, it's scary at first but the process isn't too bad once you get started. make sure you have your bank account info ready too for direct deposit setup

•Good point about direct deposit - I definitely want to get payments as fast as possible.

After you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to continue receiving benefits. This is crucial - miss a week and you won't get paid for that week. You'll also have job search requirements - typically 3 job contacts per week that you need to document in WorkSourceWA.

•Wait, I have to look for work immediately? I thought I'd have some time to figure things out first.

Kelsey Hawkins
•Yes, job search starts right away unless you're on standby waiting to return to your job. You need to be actively seeking work and document your efforts.

•The job search thing is such a pain honestly. You have to log everything in WorkSourceWA and it's so tedious.

If you run into problems reaching Washington ESD by phone (and you probably will - their lines are always busy), I recently discovered Claimyr at claimyr.com. They help you get through to an actual agent when you need to talk to someone. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call.

•Is that legitimate? I'm worried about giving my info to third parties.

Edwards Hugo
•Yeah it's legit - they don't ask for your personal unemployment info, just help you get connected to Washington ESD. Way better than redialing for hours.

•I was skeptical too but used it last month when my claim got stuck. Actually got through to someone same day.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A NIGHTMARE! I've been waiting 3 weeks for my claim to get out of adjudication and can't reach anyone. They make it impossible to get help when you need it most!

Lucas Parker
•Oh no, what's adjudication? That sounds scary.

Donna Cline
•Adjudication happens when Washington ESD needs to investigate something about your claim - like if there's a question about why you left your job. It can take weeks unfortunately.

Alfredo Lugo
•Exactly! And they don't tell you what they're investigating or how long it will take. It's maddening.

don't let the horror stories scare you too much OP. most claims go through fine if you're eligible and laid off through no fault of your own. just be honest and complete when filling everything out

•That's reassuring, thank you. I was definitely laid off due to company restructuring so hopefully no issues there.

Your weekly benefit amount will be based on your earnings during your base period (first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters). In Washington, the maximum weekly benefit is currently $999 but your actual amount depends on your past wages. You can get an estimate during the application process.

Lucas Parker
•How do they calculate it exactly? I made about $65k last year.
0 coins
Donna Cline
•It's roughly 3.85% of your total base period wages divided by 52, but capped at the maximum. With $65k you should get a decent amount.

•I made similar and got around $615 per week, so that sounds about right.

Important reminder - you typically can't collect unemployment if you quit your job voluntarily or were fired for misconduct. Since you mentioned being laid off, you should be fine. Washington ESD will verify the reason for separation with your employer.

Lucas Parker
•My employer said they'd provide documentation that it was a layoff, so that should help.

Kelsey Hawkins
•Perfect, that will definitely help if any questions come up during processing.

Make sure you understand the waiting week thing too. You won't get paid for your first week even if you file right away. It's just how the system works but catches people off guard.

Lucas Parker
•So I file immediately but don't get paid for the first week? That seems weird.
0 coins
Dylan Fisher
•Right, there's a one-week waiting period for everyone. You still have to file that week, you just don't get paid for it.

Another tip - set up your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account if you don't have one already. That's how you'll access your unemployment account online to file weekly claims and check your status.

Lucas Parker
•Is that different from just going to the Washington ESD website?
0 coins
Gianna Scott
•SAW is the secure login system that gives you access to your personal unemployment account. You create it during the initial filing process.

And don't even think about trying to call them with questions. I've been trying for weeks and either get busy signals or get disconnected after waiting on hold for an hour. The system is completely broken.

•That's exactly why I started using Claimyr - got tired of wasting my whole day trying to reach someone at Washington ESD.

•Same here, that service actually works unlike trying to call directly.

one more thing - keep records of everything. every job application, every contact with employers, all your paperwork. if they audit you later you'll need proof of your job search activities

•Good point, I'll start a folder for all this stuff right away.

The whole process usually takes 2-3 weeks from filing to receiving your first payment if everything goes smoothly. Could be longer if your claim goes into adjudication for any reason. File as soon as possible since you can't get benefits for weeks before you file.

Lucas Parker
•Okay, I'm going to file today then. Thanks everyone for all the helpful info!

•Good luck! It's not as bad as it seems once you get started.

just remember you have to be available for work and able to work to collect benefits. if you go on vacation or get sick you need to report that on your weekly claim
0 coins
Lucas Parker
•What happens if I report being sick for a few days?
0 coins
Dylan Fisher
•You might not get paid for those days since you weren't available for work. It depends on the specific situation.

One final note - be completely honest on your application and weekly claims. Washington ESD crosschecks with employers and other agencies. Any discrepancies can result in overpayment demands or even fraud charges.
0 coins
Lucas Parker
•Definitely planning to be completely honest - don't want any problems down the road.

Also worth mentioning that if you have any issues with your employer disputing your claim, you have the right to appeal. Washington ESD will hold a hearing where you can present your side of the story.

Lucas Parker
•Hopefully it won't come to that, but good to know I have options if needed.

you've got this OP! thousands of people go through this process every week. just take it one step at a time and don't stress too much about the details initially

Lucas Parker
•Thank you for the encouragement! I feel much more confident about getting started now.

Pro tip: file your weekly claims on the same day each week so you don't forget. I do mine every Sunday morning and it's just part of my routine now.
0 coins
Lucas Parker
•That's a great idea - I'll set a reminder on my phone.
0 coins
Donna Cline
•Yes, consistency helps. You have to file by the deadline each week or you lose that week's benefits.

Edwards Hugo
And seriously, bookmark that Claimyr site just in case you need to reach Washington ESD later. Having that option available is such a relief when you're dealing with unemployment stress.
0 coins
Lucas Parker
•Will do - hopefully I won't need it but better to have the option.

good luck with everything! unemployment is temporary and you'll get through this. the benefits help bridge the gap while you find your next opportunity
