How do I get on unemployment in Washington - complete beginner needs help
I just lost my job yesterday and have no idea how to get on unemployment. I've never had to file before and feeling pretty overwhelmed. Do I just go to the Washington ESD website? What information do I need to have ready? How long does it take to get approved? Any help would be appreciated because I'm stressing about bills already.

First step is to file your initial claim at esd.wa.gov. You'll need your SSN, driver's license, employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, dates worked, and reason for separation. Also need bank account info for direct deposit.

•Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or just the basic employment info?

Carmen Vega
•Just the basic info to start. They might ask for pay stubs later during adjudication if there are any questions about your claim.

make sure you file right away because there's a waiting week and benefits are backdated to when you first file, not when you lost your job

•Good to know, I was going to wait until next week to figure it all out

The whole process can be confusing at first. After you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to get paid. You also have to do job searches - 3 per week minimum. Keep a log of your job search activities because they audit these.

•What counts as job search activities? Just applying to jobs?

Zoe Stavros
•Job applications, networking events, career fairs, interviews, creating profiles on job sites, updating your resume. There's a list on the WorkSourceWA website.

•I got audited last year and they wanted screenshots of everything. Keep detailed records!

Heads up - if you can't get through to Washington ESD by phone when you have questions, there's a service called Claimyr that helps people get connected to agents. I found out about it at claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•How much does that cost? Seems like something that should be free.

•It's worth it when you're dealing with claim issues and can't reach anyone. The phone system is completely overwhelmed.

The system is SO frustrating. I've been trying to get through to someone about my adjudication for weeks. They say to call but the lines are always busy or they hang up on you.

•Same here! I call right at 8am and still can't get through. It's ridiculous.

•This is exactly why I started using Claimyr. The regular phone system is basically broken.

Back to the basics - when you file your initial claim, make sure all your employment dates are accurate. Any mistakes can delay your claim and put it into adjudication. Double check everything before submitting.

•What happens during adjudication? How long does that take?

Carmen Vega
•Adjudication is when they review your claim for any issues. Can take anywhere from 2-8 weeks depending on how backed up they are and what questions they have.

been on unemployment 3 times over the years and it gets easier each time you file. first time is definitely the hardest because you don't know what to expect

Yuki Kobayashi
•That's reassuring! Did you ever have problems with your claims?

•once i had an issue with my employer disputing my claim but it got resolved after about a month

One important thing - make sure you understand the difference between being 'able and available' vs being on standby. If you're on standby (like temporarily laid off expecting to return), the requirements are different than regular unemployment.

Yuki Kobayashi
•I don't think I'm on standby - I was permanently let go due to budget cuts

•Then you'll be filing for regular UI benefits. Make sure to select the right option when you file.

Don't forget you have to register with WorkSourceWA too. It's part of the job search requirements. You can do it online but make sure you complete your WorkSource profile.

Yuki Kobayashi
•Is that separate from the Washington ESD site?

Fatima Al-Qasimi
•Yes, WorkSourceWA is the job search site. Washington ESD handles the benefit payments. Two different systems that work together.

The weekly claim filing is every Sunday for the previous week. Set a reminder because if you miss filing your weekly claim, you won't get paid for that week.

•Can you file it late or do you just lose that week completely?
0 coins
StarStrider
•You can file late claims but there are restrictions. Better to just file on time every week.

If your claim gets held up in adjudication like mine did, that Claimyr service actually helped me get through to someone who could explain what was happening. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•Did they actually fix your issue or just explain it?

Dylan Campbell
•They were able to tell me exactly what documents I needed to upload to resolve my adjudication. Saved me weeks of waiting.

MAKE SURE you keep copies of everything - your initial application, all your weekly claims, job search logs, any correspondence from Washington ESD. You'll need it if there are any problems later.

•Should I print everything out or are digital copies okay?

Dmitry Sokolov
•Digital is fine but make sure you have backups. I keep everything in a dedicated email folder and Google Drive folder.

the waiting period is killer especially when you need money right away. just know that once you get approved, your first payment will include the waiting week so you do get that money eventually

Yuki Kobayashi
•How long after approval does the first payment usually come?

Ava Martinez
•usually 2-3 business days if you have direct deposit set up

Pro tip: when you're doing your job searches, apply to jobs you're actually qualified for. They can audit your job search activities and if you're just applying to random stuff to meet the quota, it can cause problems.

Yuki Kobayashi
•Good point, I was wondering about that. What if there aren't 3 relevant jobs posted each week?

•You can do other activities like updating your LinkedIn, attending virtual job fairs, or networking. It doesn't have to be just applications.

Washington state unemployment benefits are decent compared to other states. You get up to 26 weeks of benefits and the weekly amount is based on your previous earnings. The calculator on the Washington ESD website can give you an estimate.

•That's helpful, I'll check out the calculator to see what I might qualify for

Just went through this process myself last month. The hardest part was getting my employer information together - had to dig up old pay stubs to get exact addresses and dates. Start gathering that stuff now.

Yuki Kobayashi
•Did you need tax documents too or just employment history?
0 coins
Zainab Omar
•Just employment history for the initial filing. They have your wage information from employers already.

One thing that caught me off guard - they ask about any severance pay or vacation payout. Make sure you report that accurately because it can affect your benefit start date.
0 coins
Yuki Kobayashi
•I did get a small severance. Does that disqualify me completely?
0 coins
Connor Gallagher
•No, but it might delay when your benefits start. They'll calculate how long the severance should last and start benefits after that period.

if you run into problems and need to reach Washington ESD, I had good luck with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. My adjudication was stuck for weeks and I couldn't get through on the phone. They got me connected to an agent who walked me through exactly what I needed to do.

Don't let the process intimidate you. Yes, there are a lot of steps and requirements, but thousands of people file for unemployment every week. Take it one step at a time and you'll get through it.
