How do I sign up for unemployment in Washington state - need help starting my claim

Lost my job last Friday and everyone keeps telling me I need to file for unemployment but I honestly have no idea where to even start. Do I just go to the Washington ESD website? What information do I need to have ready? This is my first time ever having to deal with this and I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed about the whole process.

You'll want to go to esd.wa.gov and look for the 'Apply for Benefits' section. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license info, and employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked. Also make sure you have your bank account info if you want direct deposit.

Do I need to wait a certain amount of time after losing my job or should I file right away?

0 coins

File as soon as possible! There's a waiting week but your claim date starts when you file, not when you lost your job. Don't wait.

0 coins

The application itself isn't too bad but make sure you have all your employer information accurate. They're going to verify everything with your past employers so any mistakes will slow down your claim processing.

What if I can't remember exact start dates from like 2 years ago?

0 coins

Do your best estimate but try to be as accurate as possible. Check old tax documents or pay stubs if you have them.

Just went through this process myself a few months ago. If you run into issues reaching Washington ESD by phone for questions (and you probably will), I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that explains how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

0 coins

Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach them normally.

0 coins

I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got through in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying to call for days.

Make sure you understand the difference between filing your initial claim and filing weekly claims. After you file your initial application, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to actually receive payments. Don't skip weeks even if you haven't heard back about your initial claim approval yet.

0 coins

How do the weekly claims work exactly?

0 coins

Every week you'll log in and answer questions about whether you worked, looked for work, were available for work, etc. It's pretty straightforward but you have to do it every single week.

0 coins

ugh the whole system is such a nightmare, took me forever to get approved and then they kept asking for more documentation

0 coins

What kind of documentation did they want?

0 coins

pay stubs, separation notice from employer, proof of identity... just be ready for them to ask for anything and everything

One more important thing - make sure you meet the eligibility requirements before filing. You need to have worked enough hours in your base period and lost your job through no fault of your own. If you quit or were fired for misconduct, you might not qualify.

0 coins

I was laid off due to budget cuts so I think I should be okay on that front.

0 coins

Layoffs definitely qualify. You should be good to go.

0 coins

Don't forget about the job search requirements! Once your claim is approved you'll need to make a certain number of job search contacts each week and keep a log. The requirements vary but it's usually 3 contacts per week.

0 coins

Do I start the job search right away or wait until I'm approved?

0 coins

Start looking right away but the formal requirements don't kick in until your claim is approved and you start receiving benefits.

The website can be pretty glitchy sometimes. If you get error messages just try again later or try a different browser. I had to switch from Chrome to Firefox to get mine to work.

Good to know, thanks for the heads up.

Another tip - if your claim goes into adjudication (which means they need to review something), don't panic. It's pretty common and just means they need more time to process. But if you need to talk to someone about it, that's when services like Claimyr really come in handy since the regular phone lines are basically impossible.

0 coins

What causes claims to go into adjudication?

0 coins

Lots of things - if there's any question about why you left your job, if you had multiple employers, if there are discrepancies in your work history. It's not necessarily bad, just means they need to investigate.

0 coins

Make sure you set up your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account if you don't already have one. That's how you'll access everything online.

0 coins

Is that separate from the ESD website?

0 coins

It's the login system Washington state uses for all their online services. You'll create it as part of the unemployment application process.

0 coins

Pro tip: take screenshots of everything as you go through the application process. If there are any issues later, you'll have proof of what you submitted and when.

0 coins

That's really smart, I wouldn't have thought of that.

0 coins

honestly just prepare yourself for a lot of waiting and frustration. the system is overwhelmed and understaffed. but you gotta do what you gotta do

0 coins

How long did it take for you to start receiving payments?

0 coins

took about 6 weeks total but that was during a busy period. hopefully yours goes faster

0 coins

Don't forget to report any severance pay or vacation pay you received when you file. That can affect your benefit amount and timing, but it's better to report it upfront than have issues later.

0 coins

I did get a small severance check. Does that disqualify me?

0 coins

It doesn't disqualify you but it might delay when your benefits start. Washington ESD will calculate how it affects your claim.

0 coins

Once you get your claim approved, you'll get a determination letter that explains your weekly benefit amount and how long you can collect. Keep that letter somewhere safe - you'll need to reference it.

0 coins

How do they calculate the benefit amount?

0 coins

It's based on your earnings in your base period, which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you filed.

0 coins

If you have any issues during the application, definitely try that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I used it when my identity verification got stuck and they were super helpful getting me through to the right department.

0 coins

Good to know there are options if I run into problems.

0 coins

The whole process seems intimidating at first but once you get started it's pretty straightforward. Just take it step by step and don't be afraid to ask for help if you get stuck. Good luck!

0 coins

Thanks everyone, this gives me a much better idea of what I'm getting into. Going to start my application tonight.

0 coins

One last thing - make sure you file your weekly claims on time every week. If you miss the deadline, you might lose that week's benefits even if you're eligible.

0 coins

What's the deadline for weekly claims?

0 coins

You can file starting on Sunday for the previous week, and you have until the following Saturday. But don't wait - file as early in the week as possible.

0 coins

Also remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them when you file your tax return next year.

0 coins

I hadn't thought about the tax implications. Thanks for mentioning that.

0 coins

just get started asap, every day you wait is money you're potentially losing. the system sucks but you need the benefits

0 coins

You're absolutely right. I'm going to file tonight for sure.

0 coins

You've got this! The application really isn't as scary as it seems once you get started. Just have all your information ready and take your time filling it out accurately. Feel free to come back here if you run into any specific issues during the process.

0 coins

Thank you so much everyone! This thread has been incredibly helpful. I feel much more confident about getting started now.

0 coins

Just wanted to add that you should also gather any W-2s or 1099s from the past year if you have them - they can help verify your work history and earnings. Also, if you worked for any temporary agencies or had contract work, make sure to include those too since they count toward your eligibility. The more complete your work history is, the smoother the process will go.
