How do I file unemployment benefits in Washington - complete beginner here
I just lost my job yesterday and have never filed for unemployment before. I keep seeing references to Washington ESD but I'm completely lost on where to even start. Do I need to go somewhere in person or can I do this online? What information do I need to have ready? I'm worried I'm going to mess something up and delay getting benefits. Any help would be really appreciated!

You can file online at esd.wa.gov - that's the Washington ESD website. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months. Don't worry, the system walks you through it step by step.

•Thank you! Do I need exact dates of employment or just approximate?

Jamal Brown
•Exact dates if possible, but approximate is okay. Washington ESD will verify with your employers anyway.

Make sure you apply as soon as possible! In Washington, there's a waiting week but you want to get your claim started right away. The longer you wait, the longer it takes to get your first payment.

•What's a waiting week? Does that mean I won't get paid for the first week?

Fatima Al-Rashid
•Yes, there's a one week waiting period where you won't receive benefits, but you still need to file your weekly claim for that week.

I spent HOURS trying to get through to Washington ESD on the phone when I first filed. Their phone lines are constantly busy and when you do get through, you're on hold forever. I finally found Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration!

•Is that service legit? I'm always skeptical of third-party services for government stuff.

•Yeah it's legitimate. They just help you get through the phone queue faster. I was desperate after trying to call for 3 days straight.

the online application is pretty straightforward but have all your W2s ready and know your last day of work. also be prepared for it to take a while - my claim took 3 weeks to get approved

•Three weeks?! I was hoping to get money next week. How am I supposed to pay rent?

•It can vary. Some claims get approved faster, especially if there are no issues with your employment history.

Don't forget you'll need to do job searches every week once you start filing your weekly claims. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week. Keep track of everything - company names, dates, how you applied.

•Job searches? I thought unemployment was just for people who can't find work?

•You have to actively look for work to qualify. It's called being 'able and available' for work.

Make sure your reason for separation is accurate. If you were laid off vs fired vs quit makes a big difference in whether you qualify.

Zoe Papadopoulos
•I was laid off due to budget cuts. That should be fine right?

Sasha Ivanov
•Yes, layoffs due to budget cuts typically qualify for benefits without issues.

PROTIP: Create your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account first before starting your unemployment application. You'll need it to access your claim later.

•What's SAW? Is that different from the unemployment website?

Liam Murphy
•SAW is the login system Washington state uses for all their online services. You use it to access your unemployment account.

I made the mistake of not keeping good records when I first filed. Washington ESD asked for additional documentation 2 weeks later and I had to scramble to find everything. Keep copies of everything you submit!

•What kind of additional documentation did they want?

Amara Okafor
•Pay stubs, termination letter, sometimes they want proof of your identity if there are any discrepancies.

The Washington ESD website has a really good checklist of what you need before you start. I'd recommend looking at that first so you're not scrambling in the middle of the application.

•Thanks, I'll check that out before I start filing.

Just be patient with the process. I know it's stressful when you need money, but Washington ESD has to verify everything. My claim went into adjudication for 2 weeks but eventually got approved.

Zoe Papadopoulos
•What's adjudication? That sounds scary.

Yuki Tanaka
•It just means they're reviewing your claim to make sure you qualify. It's normal, especially for first-time filers.

If you run into problems during the application, don't give up. I had technical issues and thought I lost my whole application, but Washington ESD saved my progress and I was able to continue later.

•Good to know! I was worried about that happening.

Make sure you understand the weekly filing requirements BEFORE you get approved. You have to file every week, even if you're still waiting for approval. Missing a week can cause delays.

•How do I file weekly claims? Is that a separate process?

Klaus Schmidt
•Once your initial claim is filed, you'll get instructions on how to file weekly. It's through the same website but a different section.

•Easy for you to say. I've been trying to get through for weeks about an issue with my claim.

•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. Sometimes you really do need to talk to someone and the regular phone lines are impossible.

Don't forget to report any severance pay or vacation payout you received. Washington ESD will find out anyway and it's better to be upfront about it.

Zoe Papadopoulos
•I did get a small severance. Will that disqualify me?
0 coins
Dmitri Volkov
•It won't disqualify you but it might delay when your benefits start. They'll calculate how it affects your claim.

The most important thing is to be completely honest on your application. Washington ESD crosschecks everything and lying on your application is fraud.

Zoe Papadopoulos
•Definitely planning to be honest. I just want to make sure I get everything right.

Once you file, you should get a confirmation number. Write that down! You might need it if you have to call Washington ESD later.

If your claim gets denied for any reason, don't panic. You can appeal the decision. I had to appeal mine because of a miscommunication with my employer and it got resolved.

Zoe Papadopoulos
•How long does the appeal process take?
0 coins
Ingrid Larsson
•Mine took about 6 weeks, but they paid me retroactively once it was approved.

Check if you qualify for any training programs through WorkSource Washington while you're unemployed. Sometimes you can get extended benefits if you're in an approved training program.

•That's interesting. I'll look into that too.

My biggest advice is to file your weekly claims on the same day every week. I always did mine on Sunday mornings so I wouldn't forget. Consistency helps avoid missing deadlines.

Zoe Papadopoulos
•That's a great idea. I'll set a reminder on my phone.

One more thing - if you worked in multiple states in the past 18 months, you might need to file an interstate claim. Washington ESD will help you figure that out.

•I've only worked in Washington, so I should be good there.
