Washington ESD unemployment - how do i collect benefits after losing my job?
Lost my job last week and really need to figure out how to collect unemployment benefits. I've never done this before and honestly have no idea where to start with Washington ESD. Do I just go online somewhere? What information do I need to have ready? How long does it take to get approved? I'm pretty stressed about money right now so any help would be appreciated.

You need to file your initial claim online at esd.wa.gov. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, employment history for the last 18 months including employer names and addresses, and your separation reason. The sooner you file the better since there's a waiting week.

•Thanks! Do I need pay stubs or anything like that? And what's a waiting week?

Gael Robinson
•Pay stubs help but aren't required for filing. The waiting week means you won't get paid for your first week of unemployment, but you still need to file that weekly claim.

Make sure you have all your employer info correct because Washington ESD will contact them to verify everything. Any mistakes can delay your claim for weeks while they sort it out.

•Good point, I better double check all my employment dates and addresses before I file.

After you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to get paid. Don't skip weeks even if you haven't heard back about your claim approval yet. You also need to register with WorkSource and do job search activities - usually 3 job contacts per week.

•Wait, I have to look for work to get unemployment? What if I'm planning to go back to school?

•Yes, you must be able and available for work. If you're going to school full-time that could disqualify you unless it's approved training. You should talk to Washington ESD about your situation.

•I tried calling Washington ESD about my situation and could never get through. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected.

I had the same problem reaching Washington ESD by phone until I found claimyr.com. They have this service that calls for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

•That sounds too good to be true. How much does it cost?

•It was worth it for me since I needed to get my claim issues resolved quickly. Much better than wasting entire days trying to call myself.

•I've heard of that service too, apparently they handle all the waiting and transfer you when they get someone on the line.

the whole system is a mess, took me 6 weeks to get my first payment and that was before covid made everything worse

•6 weeks?? I can't wait that long to pay rent. Is there anything I can do to speed it up?

•Most claims are processed within 2-3 weeks now. His situation was probably more complicated or had issues that needed adjudication.

Just a heads up - make sure you report ANY work you do while collecting unemployment, even just a few hours. They will find out and you'll have to pay it back with penalties.

•What if I do some freelance work? Do I have to report that too?

•Yes, any income needs to be reported on your weekly claim. They'll deduct it from your unemployment payment but you might still get something depending on how much you made.

Here's the step by step process: 1) File initial claim at esd.wa.gov 2) Wait for monetary determination letter 3) Register with WorkSource 4) File weekly claims every week 5) Do required job search activities 6) Keep records of everything. The whole process can take 2-3 weeks if there are no issues with your claim.

•This is really helpful, thank you! What's a monetary determination letter?

Darcy Moore
•That tells you how much your weekly benefit amount will be and how many weeks you can collect. It's based on your earnings from the past year.

I'm going through this right now too. Filed 2 weeks ago and still waiting to hear anything back from Washington ESD. Getting really anxious about it.

•At least I'm not the only one feeling stressed about this whole process!

•Two weeks isn't that long, especially if they need to verify information with your employer. Just keep filing your weekly claims.

One more important thing - you can backdate your claim up to one week from when you became unemployed, but you need to file as soon as possible. Don't wait thinking you'll find a job quickly because you might not be able to get benefits for those earlier weeks.

•I lost my job last Monday, so I should file today then?

Gael Robinson
•Yes, file today. The effective date of your claim will be the Sunday of the week you became unemployed.

Washington ESD website has a lot of good info too if you poke around. There's a whole section explaining eligibility requirements and what to expect during the process.

•I'll check that out, thanks. Hopefully it's easier to understand than most government websites.

Still think the phone system is ridiculous. I tried calling 47 times in one day last month and never got through to a human. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got connected in like 20 minutes.

•47 times?? That's insane. No wonder people get frustrated with Washington ESD.

Liam Duke
•Yeah that's exactly why I started using Claimyr too. The phone system is basically broken.

Don't forget you need to keep track of all your job search activities. They can audit you and ask for proof that you actually applied to jobs and did the required work search activities.

Summer Green
•What kind of proof do they want? Screenshots of applications?

Darren Brooks
•Company names, contact info, dates, method of contact. Keep a log of everything you do for job searching.

just filed mine online took about 30 minutes, wasn't as bad as i thought it would be

The hardest part for me was remembering all my employment dates and supervisor names from the past year and a half. I had to dig through old emails to find some of that info.

Summer Green
•Good tip, I better gather all that information before I start the application.

•If you can't find exact dates, estimates are okay as long as they're close. Washington ESD will verify with employers anyway.

Another thing to watch out for - if you were fired or quit your job, be very careful how you describe the separation reason. That can affect whether you're eligible for benefits.

•I was laid off due to budget cuts, so that should be straightforward right?
0 coins
Manny Lark
•Yeah, layoffs are usually pretty clear cut for unemployment eligibility. Just be honest about what happened.

The weekly claim filing is super important. I missed one week early on and it took forever to get it sorted out. Set a reminder on your phone or something.

Summer Green
•What day of the week do you file the weekly claims?
0 coins
Demi Hall
•You can file starting Sunday for the previous week. I always do mine Sunday morning so I don't forget.

If your claim gets stuck in adjudication like mine did, that's when you really need to talk to someone at Washington ESD. The online system won't tell you what's wrong.
0 coins
Summer Green
•What's adjudication?
0 coins
Mateusius Townsend
•It means they're investigating something about your claim - could be your separation reason, work history, whatever. Can take weeks to resolve.
0 coins
Liam Duke
•That's another time when Claimyr really helps. Getting through to ask about adjudication status is nearly impossible otherwise.

I'm still confused about the WorkSource registration part. Do I have to go to an office or is it online?
0 coins
Darcy Moore
•It's online at worksourcewa.com. You need to create a profile and upload your resume. It's required for unemployment benefits.
0 coins
Summer Green
•Ok good, I was worried I'd have to go somewhere in person during all this.

The whole thing is overwhelming at first but once you get into the routine it's not too bad. File your weekly claim, do your job searches, keep good records. Just stay on top of it.

•Thanks everyone for all the help! I feel a lot more confident about getting started now.

•Good luck! Don't hesitate to come back if you run into issues during the process.

One last thing - if you have any questions after you file, try the Washington ESD website chat first before calling. Sometimes that's faster than waiting on hold forever.
0 coins
Summer Green
•Didn't know they had chat support, that's good to know!
0 coins
Dana Doyle
•The chat is hit or miss though. For anything complicated you still need to talk to a real person on the phone.
