How can I get unemployment benefits in Washington state - need help with the application process
I just lost my job last week and I'm trying to figure out how to apply for unemployment benefits. I've never done this before and I'm honestly pretty confused about the whole process. I know I need to go through Washington ESD but their website is overwhelming. Can someone walk me through the basic steps? Do I need to have all my employment history ready or can I fill that in later? Also how long does it usually take to get approved? I'm really stressed about paying my bills.

First thing you need to do is create an account on the Washington ESD website. You'll file your initial claim there and then you have to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. Make sure you have your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months, and bank account info if you want direct deposit.

•Thank you! Do I need exact dates for all my jobs or just approximate?

•Try to be as exact as possible, especially your last job. They'll verify everything with your employers so accuracy matters.

The whole process can be really frustrating, especially if you run into any issues. I spent weeks trying to get through to someone at Washington ESD when my claim got stuck in adjudication.

•What's adjudication? That sounds scary.

•It's when they need to review something about your claim before approving it. Could be anything from verifying your employment to checking if you qualify.

If you end up having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone (and trust me, you probably will), I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•Is that legitimate? Sounds too good to be true.

•Yeah I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They just help you get through the phone queue, you still talk to the real Washington ESD agent yourself.

•I've heard good things about Claimyr from other people too. Might be worth trying if you get stuck.

Make sure you apply as soon as possible! There's a waiting week in Washington but the sooner you file the sooner that week starts. Also be prepared for the job search requirements - you'll need to look for work and keep track of it.

•How many jobs do I need to apply to each week?

Anastasia Popov
•It depends on your situation but usually 3 job search activities per week. Could be applications, networking, attending job fairs, etc.

•What was confusing about the weekly claims?

•just the whole interface is clunky and the questions are worded weird. you'll figure it out but it's annoying

Also important to know - you can't just quit your job and get unemployment. You have to be laid off, fired for reasons other than misconduct, or have your hours reduced significantly. If you quit, you generally won't qualify unless it was for good cause.

•I was laid off due to budget cuts so I should be okay there.

•Perfect, that's exactly the situation unemployment is designed for. You should be fine.

When you file your claim, be really careful about reporting any work you do while on unemployment. Even part-time work has to be reported or you could get in trouble for overpayment later.

•What if I do some freelance work here and there?

•Still needs to be reported. They'll reduce your weekly benefit amount based on what you earn, but it's better than getting hit with an overpayment notice later.

The whole process usually takes about 2-3 weeks from when you first apply to when you get your first payment, assuming there are no issues with your claim.

•That's actually faster than I expected. I was worried it would take months.

•Yeah as long as everything is straightforward it moves pretty quickly. The delays happen when they need to verify something or if your case is complex.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit right away. Getting paper checks takes forever and they get lost in the mail sometimes.

•Good point, I'll make sure to do that when I apply.

Don't forget you'll need to register with WorkSource too for the job search requirements. It's all connected to the Washington ESD system but it's a separate step you have to do.

•Is that something I do right away or can I wait a bit?

Anastasia Popov
•You should do it pretty quickly after filing your initial claim. They'll remind you about it but better to get it done early.

If your claim does get stuck or you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, definitely consider using Claimyr to get through. I wasted so much time trying to call on my own before I found that service.

•I'll keep that in mind if I run into problems. Hopefully everything goes smoothly though.

One more thing - make sure you keep good records of everything. Save confirmation numbers, print out important pages, keep track of your job search activities. If there are ever any questions about your claim, having documentation helps a lot.

The maximum weekly benefit amount in Washington is pretty decent compared to other states, so don't stress too much about the money side of things if you qualify.

•That's reassuring. I was worried it wouldn't be enough to cover my basic expenses.

Just remember that filing for unemployment isn't something to be embarrassed about. You paid into the system when you were working, and this is exactly what it's for.

•Thank you for saying that. I was feeling pretty down about the whole situation.

•It happens to lots of people, especially with the way the job market has been. You'll get through this.

Make sure you file your weekly claims on time every week. If you miss a week you might not be able to go back and claim it later.

Freya Nielsen
•When do the weekly claims need to be filed? Is there a specific day?
0 coins
Chloe Harris
•You can file starting Sunday for the previous week, and you have until the following Saturday. Most people do it on Sunday to get it out of the way.

The Washington ESD website has a lot of helpful information once you get used to navigating it. Don't be afraid to read through the FAQ sections if you have questions.
