How to apply for unemployment benefits in Washington state - need step by step help
I just got laid off from my job last week and I've never filed for unemployment before. I'm completely lost about how to apply for unemployment benefits in Washington. I found the Washington ESD website but it's confusing with all the different portals and requirements. Can someone walk me through the actual steps? Do I need to have all my employment history ready? How long does it take to get approved? I'm really stressed about paying rent next month.

First thing - don't panic! The Washington ESD application process is actually pretty straightforward once you know the steps. You'll need to file your initial claim through their online portal at esd.wa.gov. Have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment info for the last 18 months ready. This includes employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation.

•Thank you! Do I need exact dates or just approximate months? Some of my previous jobs were a few years ago.

•For the last 18 months, try to be as accurate as possible. Older employment history won't affect your current claim calculation, so don't stress about jobs from years ago.

Here's what you actually need to do step by step: 1) Go to esd.wa.gov and create an account if you don't have one 2) Click 'Apply for Benefits' 3) Fill out the application completely - don't skip anything 4) Submit it 5) Wait for your monetary determination letter 6) File your first weekly claim. The whole initial application takes about 30-45 minutes if you have all your info ready.

•How long does it usually take to get the monetary determination? I filed mine 3 days ago and haven't heard anything.

•Usually 7-10 business days, but it can take longer if there are any issues with your employment verification or if your claim needs adjudication.

One thing to know - after you file your initial claim, you HAVE to file weekly claims every week to get paid, even if your claim is still pending. I made the mistake of not filing weekly claims while waiting for approval and lost out on benefits for those weeks.

•Wait, so I can file weekly claims before my claim is even approved? That seems backwards.

Zoe Christodoulou
•Yes! You file weekly claims starting the week after you file your initial application. If your claim gets approved, you'll get paid for all the weeks you filed. If you don't file weekly claims, you won't get paid for those weeks even if approved later.

•This is so important! I see people miss this all the time and then wonder why they're missing payments.

Also make sure you're available for work and actively looking for jobs. Washington ESD has job search requirements - you need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. You can do this through WorkSourceWA or track it yourself, but you need to be able to prove you're looking if they ask.

•Do I have to use WorkSourceWA or can I just apply to jobs on Indeed and other sites?

•You can apply anywhere, but using WorkSourceWA counts toward your job search requirements. I'd recommend doing a mix - use WorkSourceWA for some applications and regular job sites for others.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my application status. Their phone lines are always busy and when I do get through, I get disconnected. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there? This is driving me crazy.

•Try calling right at 8am when they open. I've had better luck getting through early in the morning.

•I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. You put in your info and they call you back when an agent is available. Saved me hours of calling. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legit? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

•Yeah it's real. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got connected to an agent within a few hours instead of spending days trying to call.

Quick question - if I was fired from my job, can I still get unemployment? My manager said I was terminated for poor performance but I think it was unfair.

•You can still apply. Being fired doesn't automatically disqualify you unless it was for misconduct. Poor performance usually doesn't count as misconduct. Washington ESD will investigate and make a determination.

•I was in the same situation. Got fired but still got unemployment approved. They contacted my employer and determined it wasn't misconduct. Just be honest on your application.

Make sure you have your bank account info ready for direct deposit. Getting a debit card takes longer and has fees. Also, don't forget to report any income you earn while on unemployment - even small amounts need to be reported on your weekly claims.

•What if I do some freelance work while collecting unemployment? Do I need to report that too?
0 coins
Giovanni Gallo
•Yes, report ALL income. Even $20 from freelance work needs to be reported. It might reduce your benefit amount but not reporting it can cause big problems later.

The Washington ESD website is such a mess. I spent 2 hours trying to figure out where to apply. Why can't they make it more user-friendly?

•Totally agree. The navigation is terrible and half the links don't work properly.

•It's frustrating but once you find the right pages, bookmark them. The actual application process isn't too bad once you get to it.

Don't forget about the waiting week! Washington has a one-week waiting period before you can receive benefits. So even if everything goes smoothly, you won't get paid for your first week.

•Wait, so I have to wait a whole week before getting any money? That's going to be really tight financially.

NebulaKnight
•Unfortunately yes. It's state law. You still file the weekly claim for that week, but you don't get paid for it. Think of it as a one-week penalty.

I applied 3 weeks ago and my claim is still in adjudication. This is taking forever and I'm running out of money. Anyone know how to speed this up?

•Adjudication can take 4-6 weeks depending on the issue. If it's a separation issue, they have to contact your employer and wait for a response.

•Same boat here. I tried that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and finally got to talk to an agent. They couldn't speed up the process but at least explained what was happening with my claim.

Pro tip: File your claim on Sunday night or Monday morning if possible. The system is usually less busy then and you're less likely to run into technical issues.

•Good advice. I tried filing on a Friday afternoon and the site kept timing out.

Make sure you understand the difference between your weekly benefit amount and your maximum benefit amount. Your weekly amount is what you get each week, but there's a total cap on how much you can receive over the entire benefit year.

•How do I know what my weekly benefit amount will be? Is there a calculator somewhere?
0 coins
Zainab Khalil
•It's based on your earnings in your base period. Washington ESD will calculate it for you and send you a monetary determination letter with all the details.

If your claim gets denied, don't give up! You can appeal the decision. I got denied initially but won my appeal and got all my back benefits.

•How long does the appeal process take? I just got denied and I'm thinking about appealing.

•Mine took about 6 weeks from filing the appeal to getting the hearing decision. But it was worth it - got 8 weeks of back pay.

One more thing - if you've been working reduced hours instead of being completely laid off, you might still qualify for partial unemployment benefits. A lot of people don't know this option exists.

•Really? I'm working 20 hours a week now instead of 40. I thought I couldn't get unemployment if I was still working.
0 coins
Yara Haddad
•Nope! If your hours or wages were reduced through no fault of your own, you can still qualify for partial benefits. Definitely worth applying.

The whole process is stressful but hang in there. Most people get approved eventually if they're eligible. Just make sure you keep filing your weekly claims and meeting the job search requirements while you wait.
