How get unemployment benefits in Washington - complete beginner here
I just lost my job last week and have no idea how get unemployment benefits. I've never filed for unemployment before and feeling totally lost. I know I need to apply through Washington ESD but their website is confusing and I don't understand all the requirements. Can someone walk me through the basic steps? Do I need to wait a certain amount of time after losing my job? I'm really stressed about paying my bills.

First thing - don't wait! You should apply for unemployment benefits as soon as possible after losing your job. Go to esd.wa.gov and click on 'Apply for Benefits'. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked.

•Thank you! Do I need to have all my old pay stubs or just the employer information?

Kylo Ren
•You don't need pay stubs for the initial application, just the employer details. Washington ESD will verify your wages directly with your employers.

The application process is pretty straightforward once you get started. After you apply online, you'll get a letter in the mail with your claim details and instructions for filing weekly claims. Make sure to file your weekly claim every week even if your initial claim is still being processed.

•How long does it usually take to get approved? I'm worried about the delay.

•If everything is straightforward, you might get your first payment in 2-3 weeks. But if there are any issues, it could take longer and go into adjudication.

One thing that really helps is using Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD when you have questions. I discovered it when I was having trouble reaching anyone by phone. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Made my life so much easier when I needed to talk to someone about my claim status.

•Is that a legitimate service? I'm nervous about giving my information to third parties.

Jason Brewer
•Yes it's legit - they just help you get through the phone queues to reach actual Washington ESD staff. You're still talking directly to ESD representatives, just without the hours of busy signals.

•I was skeptical too but tried it when I couldn't get through for weeks. Actually works and saved me tons of time and frustration.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements too. You'll need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of your activities. You can do this through WorkSourceWA or keep your own records.

•Do I have to start the job search immediately or is there a waiting period?

Liam Cortez
•You need to be actively searching for work during your first week of unemployment, so start right away. The job search requirement kicks in immediately.

ugh the whole system is so confusing when you're already stressed about losing your job. I remember being totally overwhelmed when I first applied

•Exactly how I'm feeling right now! It's like they make it complicated on purpose.

•It gets easier once you get into the routine of filing weekly claims. Hang in there!

Important: when you file your initial claim, you'll choose either to have taxes withheld from your benefits or not. I'd recommend having them withhold the taxes (10% federal) so you don't get hit with a big tax bill later.

•Good tip! I hadn't thought about the tax implications.

•Yeah learned this the hard way - owed like $800 in taxes on my unemployment benefits the next year

Also be prepared for possible adjudication if there are any questions about why you lost your job. This is normal and just means they need to investigate before approving your claim. Don't panic if you see 'adjudication in progress' on your account.

•What kind of things trigger adjudication? I was laid off due to budget cuts, not fired for cause.

Nina Fitzgerald
•Layoffs are usually pretty straightforward. Adjudication is more common if you were fired, quit, or if there are questions about your work history.

•Even simple layoffs can sometimes trigger adjudication if the employer contests the claim or if there are discrepancies in the paperwork.

One more thing - if you do run into problems or your claim gets stuck, definitely consider using Claimyr to reach Washington ESD by phone. The regular phone lines are absolutely brutal - I spent weeks trying to get through before finding that service.

•How much does something like that cost?

Kiara Fisherman
•It's worth it when you consider the alternative is potentially waiting weeks or months without being able to reach anyone. Way cheaper than missing benefit payments.

Don't forget to set up your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account if you don't already have one. You'll need this to access your unemployment account online and file your weekly claims.

•Is SAW different from the regular ESD website?

Emma Olsen
•SAW is the secure login system that Washington state uses for multiple services including unemployment. You'll use the same SAW account for ESD, Department of Licensing, etc.

Just want to say hang in there - I know it feels overwhelming but thousands of people go through this process successfully every week. Take it one step at a time.

Quick reminder about the waiting week - Washington doesn't have a waiting week anymore, so you can potentially get benefits for your first week of unemployment if you file right away and meet all the requirements.

•Wait really? I thought there was still a waiting week. When did that change?

Liam Cortez
•The waiting week was eliminated a few years ago. As long as you're eligible, you can get paid for your first week.

Make sure you have a good phone number and email on file because Washington ESD will contact you if they need additional information. Check your messages regularly!

Paige Cantoni
•Should I be checking for messages daily?
0 coins
Austin Leonard
•I'd check at least every couple days, especially in the first few weeks after you apply. Missing a message from ESD can delay your claim.

Another situation where Claimyr really helps is if you get messages from Washington ESD that you don't understand. Instead of trying to figure it out on your own or waiting weeks to get through on the phone, you can get quick clarification from an actual ESD representative.

•That sounds really useful, especially since I'm so new to all this terminology and process.

•Yeah the ESD letters and messages can be pretty confusing if you're not familiar with the system. Having a way to actually talk to someone makes a huge difference.

Pro tip: keep detailed records of everything - when you applied, when you filed weekly claims, any correspondence from ESD, your job search activities. It'll save you headaches later if any issues come up.

•Good advice! I'll start a folder for all my unemployment paperwork.

The most important thing is to be honest and accurate on your application. Don't try to hide anything or guess at dates/wages. ESD will verify everything anyway and dishonesty can disqualify you completely.

Paige Cantoni
•What if I'm not sure about exact dates from previous jobs? Should I estimate?
0 coins
Isla Fischer
•It's better to be as accurate as possible. If you have to estimate, make a note of that. You can also check old tax returns or contact previous employers for dates.

Once you get your claim established, the weekly filing becomes routine. You'll answer the same questions each week about whether you worked, whether you're able and available for work, etc. Set a reminder so you don't forget to file each week.

•What happens if I miss filing a weekly claim?
0 coins
Miles Hammonds
•You can usually file for the missed week later, but it's better not to miss any. Some people lose benefits permanently if they miss too many weeks without good cause.

•I missed one week early on and was able to request it later through my online account. But definitely don't make it a habit.

Last thing - if you're union member, make sure to let your union know you've applied for unemployment. Sometimes they have additional resources or advice specific to your situation.

Paige Cantoni
•I'm not union but that's good advice for others reading this thread.

You've gotten great advice here! The key is just to start the process - don't overthink it. Apply online, file your weekly claims, do your job search, and ask for help when you need it. You'll figure it out as you go.
