How can I file for unemployment in Washington - need step by step help
I just got laid off yesterday and I'm completely lost on how to file for unemployment benefits in Washington. I've never done this before and the Washington ESD website is confusing me. Can someone walk me through the basic steps? Do I need to wait a certain amount of time before filing? I'm worried I'm going to mess something up and delay my benefits.

You can file immediately - don't wait! Go to esd.wa.gov and click on 'Apply for Benefits'. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment info for the last 18 months. The system will walk you through it step by step.

•Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or just the employer information?

•Just employer info is fine - names, addresses, dates worked, and reason you left each job. They'll verify wages through their system.

Make sure you file during your first week of unemployment or you might lose that week's benefits. I made that mistake and couldn't get that first week back.

•Oh no, I got laid off yesterday (Friday). Should I file today or wait until Monday?

•File today! The waiting week thing got eliminated in Washington. You can get benefits for your first week now as long as you file right away.

I'm going through this too and it's been a nightmare trying to get through to anyone at Washington ESD. Filed 2 weeks ago and my claim is stuck in adjudication with no explanation. Can't reach a human on the phone no matter how many times I call.

•Have you tried Claimyr? It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. I used it last month when my claim got stuck and finally talked to someone. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that but I'm desperate at this point. Does it actually work?

•Worked for me. Got connected within an hour instead of calling for days. The agent was able to clear up my adjudication issue right away.

The whole system is a joke. They make it impossible to reach anyone and then wonder why people are frustrated. I've been waiting 3 weeks for my identity verification to process.

•Identity verification can take time but you should be able to check status online. Log into your SecureAccess Washington account and look for any pending issues.

•Been checking daily. Just says 'in process' with no timeline. So helpful.

For the original poster - here's the basic process: 1) File your initial claim online 2) Wait for determination letter (usually 7-10 days) 3) If approved, file weekly claims every Sunday 4) Complete job search requirements 5) Keep records of everything. Don't skip any steps or your benefits could get delayed.

•What are the job search requirements? Do I need to apply for jobs immediately?

Carmella Fromis
•You need to make 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. You can do this through WorkSource or on your own. Start looking right away even if you haven't been approved yet.

dont forget to report any severance pay or vacation payout when you file. i forgot about my vacation payout and got hit with an overpayment notice months later. had to pay back like $800

Ryder Greene
•I am getting 2 weeks severance pay. Will this affect my benefits?
0 coins
AaliyahAli
•Yes, severance counts as wages and will delay your benefits. Make sure to report the exact amount and dates when you file your claim.

Also make sure you have a valid email address because all communication from Washington ESD comes electronically now. Check your secure message center regularly for important updates.

•Good point. Should I use my work email or personal?

Theodore Nelson
•Personal email for sure! Your work email might get deactivated after you're laid off.

The system has been better since COVID but still has issues. Just be patient and keep calling if you run into problems. Sometimes it takes multiple attempts to get through.

Ellie Simpson
•Multiple attempts is an understatement. I've called probably 50 times over 2 weeks.

•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. Worth trying if you're spending hours calling every day.

Update: I filed my claim this morning and it went smoother than expected. Got a confirmation number and they said I should hear back within 10 business days. Fingers crossed!

•Good job filing quickly! Keep that confirmation number safe and check your account daily for updates.

•Nice work! Now start your job search activities right away so you're ready when benefits kick in.

One thing they don't tell you upfront - if you worked in multiple states in the last 18 months, you might need to file in a different state. Check where you earned the most wages first.

•I only worked in Washington so I should be good. But that's helpful to know!

Diego Fisher
•Yeah, it's called filing in your 'base period state'. Can get confusing if you moved around for work.

Remember that Washington has some of the better unemployment benefits in the country. Maximum weekly benefit is $999 plus the additional $50 per dependent. Make sure you claim any dependents when you file.

•I have two kids. Do I need their social security numbers to claim them?
0 coins
AaliyahAli
•Yes, you'll need their SSNs and birth certificates. The dependent benefit can add up to significant money over time.

Make sure your bank account info is correct if you want direct deposit. Paper checks take way longer to process and can get lost in the mail.
0 coins
Ryder Greene
•How long does direct deposit usually take?
0 coins
Henrietta Beasley
•Usually 1-2 business days after they process your weekly claim. Much faster than waiting for a check.

•We're all in this together. The system might be frustrating but the benefits do eventually come through.

Pro tip: save screenshots of everything when you file online. I had a technical glitch that wiped out my application halfway through and had to start over. Screenshots saved me from re-entering everything.

Ryder Greene
•Great advice! I'll definitely do that when I file my weekly claims.

•Yes, and also keep records of your job search activities. They can audit you at any time and ask for proof.

Does anyone know if part-time work affects your benefits? I might be able to pick up some gig work while I'm looking for full-time employment.
0 coins
AaliyahAli
•You can work part-time and still get partial benefits. Just make sure to report ALL earnings when you file your weekly claim. They'll reduce your benefit amount based on what you earn.

Emma Johnson
•Good to know. I was worried any work at all would disqualify me completely.

I went through this process last year and the hardest part was the waiting. Filed in January and didn't get my first payment until February because of adjudication delays. Just be prepared for potential delays.

Ryder Greene
•What caused the adjudication delay in your case?

•They needed to verify my reason for leaving my previous job. My employer initially contested the claim but it got resolved eventually.

If you get stuck trying to reach Washington ESD like I did, definitely check out that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked. Finally got to talk to an agent who explained why my claim was held up.

•I'm going to try it this week. Can't keep spending 3 hours a day calling just to get hung up on.

Olivia Garcia
•It's worth it just for the peace of mind. Knowing what's actually happening with your claim makes all the difference.

One more thing - if you're union make sure to check with them about supplemental unemployment benefits. Some unions provide additional payments on top of state benefits.
0 coins
Ryder Greene
•I'm not union but that's good to know for others. Every bit helps when you're out of work.

Noah Lee
•Absolutely. And some employers offer career transition services too, so check your severance package thoroughly.

The Washington ESD website has a lot of helpful resources under their 'Unemployed Workers' section. Videos, FAQs, forms - everything you need to understand the process better.

Ryder Greene
•I'll check that out. I've been so focused on just filing the claim that I haven't explored the other resources.

•The videos are especially helpful for understanding job search requirements and how to file weekly claims properly.

•That's what these forums are for. We've all been there and know how confusing it can be the first time.
