How to get money for unemployment through Washington ESD - need help with the process
I just lost my job last week and I'm completely lost on how to actually get unemployment money. I know I need to file with Washington ESD but I have no idea where to start or what steps I need to take to actually receive payments. Can someone walk me through the basic process? I'm really stressed about paying my bills and need to get this figured out ASAP.

First step is filing your initial claim at esd.wa.gov. You'll need your SSN, last employer info, and earnings from the past 18 months. After that gets approved, you have to file weekly claims every week to actually receive payments.

•How long does it usually take to get approved? I need money coming in soon.

Ava Williams
•Usually 2-3 weeks if there are no issues, but can take longer if your claim goes into adjudication.

make sure you have all your documents ready before you start the application. they ask for a lot of specific info about your previous jobs

•What kind of documents do I need exactly?

•pay stubs, w2s, employer contact info, dates of employment, reason you lost your job

The key thing people don't realize is that even after you file your initial claim, you MUST file weekly claims every single week to get paid. Miss a week and you won't get benefits for that week. Also, you need to be actively searching for work and keeping a job search log.

•How many jobs do I need to apply to each week?

•Washington requires 3 job search activities per week. Can be applications, networking, job fairs, etc. Keep detailed records.

•And if you get called for an interview or job offer, you have to report it on your weekly claim!

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for two weeks to check on my claim status and can't get through. Their phone system is absolutely terrible. Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you connected to a real person. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me hours of frustration.

•How much does that cost? I'm already broke from being unemployed

•It's worth it if you need to actually talk to someone at ESD. Way better than spending all day redialing busy signals.

•I might try this too. I've been calling for days and getting nowhere.

Wait, how much money will I actually get? Is there a way to calculate it ahead of time?

•Your weekly benefit amount is based on your highest earning quarter in the past year. There's a calculator on the ESD website, but roughly it's about 1/3 of your average weekly wage.

Dmitry Petrov
•That's way less than I was making. Is there anything else I can get?

•Regular unemployment is the main program. Maximum weekly benefit in Washington is currently $999 per week, but most people get much less.

IMPORTANT: If you worked for multiple employers, make sure you list ALL of them on your application. I forgot to include a part-time job and it delayed my claim for weeks while they investigated.

•Even really small jobs? I did some gig work last year.

•Yes, everything counts. Better to include too much information than too little.

this system is so confusing, why can't they just make it simple

•ikr, took me forever to figure out the weekly claims part

•The worst part is when something goes wrong and you can't reach anyone to fix it

Pro tip: File your weekly claims on Sunday mornings when the system is less busy. And always file before the midnight deadline on Saturday - if you miss it, you lose that week's benefits.

•What happens if I'm sick and forget to file one week?

•You can sometimes get the week back if you have a good reason, but it requires calling ESD and explaining the situation.

•I missed a week due to covid and they did restore it, but took forever to process

Does anyone know how long unemployment benefits last? I'm worried this job search might take a while.

•Regular unemployment is up to 26 weeks in Washington. That's assuming you have enough earnings in your base period to qualify for the full duration.

Keisha Brown
•What if I can't find a job in 26 weeks?

•Then you're out of luck unless Congress extends benefits during a recession. That's why it's important to job search seriously from day one.

Make sure you're using WorkSourceWA for your job search activities. ESD integrates with that system and it makes reporting easier.

•Is that a separate website I need to sign up for?

Paolo Esposito
•Yes, worksourcewa.com. You can use the same login as your ESD account I think.

My friend said she got disqualified for quitting her job. I was laid off though so I should be fine right?

Ava Williams
•Layoffs usually qualify unless it was for misconduct. If you quit voluntarily or were fired for cause, that can disqualify you.

Yara Khalil
•ok good, it was definitely a layoff not my fault

Whatever you do, don't lie on your application or weekly claims. They audit everything and if they catch you in a lie, you'll have to pay everything back plus penalties.

Dmitry Petrov
•What kind of things do they audit?
0 coins
Connor O'Neill
•They cross-reference your employers, check if you're working while claiming benefits, verify your job search activities. Pretty thorough.

If anyone is having trouble reaching ESD by phone like I was, seriously check out that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. Game changer for getting through to an actual human being at the unemployment office.

•I might need to try that if my claim gets stuck somewhere

•I used it yesterday and finally got my adjudication issue resolved. Worth every penny.

when do the payments actually start coming? like after you file the first weekly claim or what
0 coins
Ava Williams
•There's a one-week waiting period, so you won't get paid for your first week. After that, if everything goes smoothly, payments come 2-3 days after you file your weekly claim.

Miguel Castro
•ugh so basically 3-4 weeks before any money comes in

Important reminder: You must be able and available for work to receive benefits. If you're sick, on vacation, or otherwise unable to work, you need to report that on your weekly claim and won't be eligible for those weeks.

•What if I have a doctor's appointment during the week?
0 coins
Zainab Ibrahim
•That's fine, they're asking about your general availability for work, not every single hour of the week.

Pro tip: Set up direct deposit when you file your claim. Getting payments by mail takes way longer and checks can get lost.
0 coins
Dmitry Petrov
•Can I change to direct deposit later if I didn't set it up initially?
0 coins
Paolo Esposito
•Yes but it takes a few weeks to process the change, so better to do it right away.

What happens if I start a new job while still receiving unemployment? Do I need to tell them right away?
0 coins
Ava Williams
•Yes, report any work on your weekly claim immediately. You can sometimes still get partial benefits if you're working part-time and earning less than your weekly benefit amount.

Keisha Brown
•Good to know, I have a potential part-time opportunity coming up

this whole process seems overwhelming but I guess I just need to start with filing the initial claim and see what happens

•Same here, thanks everyone for all the info

•You'll figure it out as you go. The most important thing is just getting started with the application.

One last thing - keep copies of everything you submit and take screenshots of your weekly claims. If there's ever a dispute, you'll want documentation.

Dmitry Petrov
•Great advice, I'll make sure to do that

Miguel Castro
•yeah learned that the hard way when they said I never filed a weekly claim but I had
