How do you get paid unemployment benefits through Washington ESD?
I just lost my job last week and I'm completely lost on how to actually get unemployment payments started. I know I need to file with Washington ESD but I have no idea what the actual process looks like or how long it takes to get paid. Do I need to do anything special to get the money deposited? How often do they pay out? Any help would be appreciated since I've never done this before.

First thing is filing your initial claim on the Washington ESD website. You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months, and reason for separation. After your claim is approved, you have to file weekly claims every week to get paid.

•How do I know if my claim got approved? And what exactly is a weekly claim?

•You'll get a determination letter in the mail or through your online account. Weekly claims are basically confirming each week that you're still unemployed and looking for work.

the payments usually come through direct deposit if you set that up, otherwise they mail you a debit card. takes about 2-3 weeks after filing to get your first payment if everything goes smooth

•2-3 weeks?? I was hoping it would be faster than that. How do I set up direct deposit?

•yeah it sucks but thats just how it is. you can add your bank info in your esd account after you file

The key thing people don't realize is you need to be actively job searching and documenting your work search activities. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week, and you need to keep detailed records. Also make sure you're available for work - if you're not available or turn down suitable work, they can disqualify you.

•What counts as a job search activity? Is just applying online enough?

•Applications count, but also things like attending job fairs, networking events, or career workshops through WorkSource. Keep a log with dates, employer names, and what you did.

Honestly, the hardest part is getting through to Washington ESD if you have questions or problems. I've been trying to call them for days about an issue with my claim and can never get through. The phone system is terrible - either busy signals or it just hangs up on you after waiting forever.

•I had the same problem until I found this service called Claimyr that actually gets you through to ESD agents. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call.

•Really? How does that work exactly? I'm desperate at this point.

•It's pretty simple - they basically handle the calling process for you and connect you when an agent is available. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

MAKE SURE YOU FILE EVERY SINGLE WEEK even if you haven't heard back about your initial claim yet! I made the mistake of waiting and lost out on weeks of benefits because I thought I had to wait for approval first. You can file weekly claims while your initial claim is still processing.

•Wait really? I can file weekly claims before my initial claim is approved?

Charity Cohan
•YES! This is super important. You won't get paid until your claim is approved but you need to claim those weeks or you lose them forever.

•This is correct. Always file your weekly claims on time even during adjudication or you forfeit those benefit weeks.

This is all so overwhelming. So I file the initial claim, then file weekly claims every week, do job searches, and eventually money shows up in my account? What if they deny my claim?

Maxwell St. Laurent
•If they deny your initial claim, you can appeal the decision. You have 30 days from the determination date to file an appeal.

•Don't panic if your claim goes into adjudication either. That just means they need to verify some information before approving it. Common reasons are job separation issues or wage verification.

honestly the whole system is a nightmare, took me 6 weeks to get my first payment because of some stupid paperwork issue they never explained properly

Talia Klein
•6 weeks?! How did you survive that long without income?

Shelby Bauman
•credit cards and help from family, it was rough. just be prepared for delays

also dont forget about taxes - unemployment benefits are taxable income so you might want to have taxes withheld or set money aside for tax season

Talia Klein
•I didn't even think about taxes. How much do they typically withhold?
0 coins
PaulineW
•i think its 10% federal but you can choose to have it withheld or not when you file your weekly claims

The weekly filing deadline is important too - you have to file by 6 PM on Saturday for the previous week. Miss that deadline and you can't go back and file for that week later.

Talia Klein
•Good to know. So every Saturday I need to file for the week that just ended?
0 coins
Quinn Herbert
•Exactly. Set a reminder on your phone because they're strict about the deadline.

One thing that helped me was setting up text alerts through my ESD account. They send you reminders about filing deadlines and updates about your claim status.

Talia Klein
•That sounds useful. Is that in the account settings somewhere?
0 coins
Salim Nasir
•Yeah, once you create your account there should be a notifications section where you can enable text and email alerts.

Wait I'm confused about something - do you get paid for the week you file or the week before? Like if I file on Saturday, which week am I getting paid for?
0 coins
Annabel Kimball
•You're filing for the week that just ended. So if you file on Saturday the 15th, you're claiming benefits for the week ending on that Saturday (the 9th through the 15th).
0 coins
Hazel Garcia
•Ok that makes sense. And I need to do job searches during that week I'm claiming for, right?
0 coins
Annabel Kimball
•Correct. You need to complete your required job search activities during the week you're claiming, not after you file the claim.

The payment amounts are based on your earnings from your highest quarter in the base period. For most people it's about 60-70% of your previous income up to the maximum benefit amount.
0 coins
Talia Klein
•How do they calculate which quarter counts as the highest? Is it just the 3 months before I got laid off?
0 coins
Laila Fury
•No, it's more complicated than that. The base period is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you filed. So if you file in January 2025, they look at January 2024 through September 2024.

Something I wish someone had told me - if you work part-time while collecting unemployment, you need to report those earnings on your weekly claim. They'll reduce your benefit amount but you might still get some unemployment money.
0 coins
Talia Klein
•Good to know since I might pick up some gig work. Do they reduce it dollar for dollar?
0 coins
Geoff Richards
•No, there's usually a small amount you can earn without any reduction, then they reduce your benefits by a percentage. The exact formula depends on how much you earn.

Has anyone mentioned the waiting week yet? In Washington you don't get paid for your first week of unemployment - it's like a waiting period. So even if everything goes perfectly, your first payment covers your second week of unemployment.
0 coins
Talia Klein
•So I lose a whole week of benefits just because? That seems unfair.

Simon White
•Yeah it's annoying but that's how the system works. Just factor that into your financial planning.

Update on my situation - I finally got through to someone using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Took less than an hour to connect with an ESD agent and got my issue resolved. Definitely recommend it if you're having trouble reaching them by phone.

Talia Klein
•That's great! Was it expensive to use?
0 coins
Chris Elmeda
•Much cheaper than missing work to sit on hold all day. Plus my claim was stuck so it was worth it to get it moving again.

Make sure you understand what 'able and available' means too. You have to be physically and mentally able to work, and available to accept suitable work during normal business hours. If you're sick, on vacation, or have other commitments that prevent you from working, you can't claim benefits for those days.

Talia Klein
•What if I have a doctor's appointment during the week? Do I need to report that?
0 coins
Hugo Kass
•Brief appointments are usually fine, but if you're unavailable for substantial periods you should report it. Better to be honest than risk issues later.

The ESD website can be pretty glitchy too, especially on Sundays when everyone is trying to file their weekly claims. I usually file mine on Friday evenings to avoid the rush.

Talia Klein
•Good tip. I was planning to file on Sundays but I'll try earlier in the week.

Nasira Ibanez
•Yeah, as long as you file before the Saturday 6 PM deadline you're fine. No need to wait until the last minute.

One last thing - keep records of EVERYTHING. Save all your determination letters, correspondence, job search logs, and payment records. If there are ever any issues or audits, you'll need documentation to back up your claims.

•Thanks everyone for all the help! This gives me a much better idea of what to expect. I'll start my initial claim tomorrow.

•Good luck! Remember to file your weekly claims even while waiting for approval, and don't hesitate to ask if you have more questions.

oh and get the ESD mobile app if you have a smartphone, makes filing weekly claims way easier than using the website

Also wanted to mention that if you're worried about calling ESD and can't get through the normal way, that Claimyr thing people mentioned actually works pretty well. I was skeptical at first but it connected me within 45 minutes when I'd been trying to call for weeks on my own.

Talia Klein
•I'll definitely check that out if I run into problems. Thanks for confirming it works!

•No problem. The video demo they have explains it better than I can - really straightforward process.
