How do I get unemployment checks from Washington ESD - complete beginner here
I just lost my job last week and I'm completely lost on how to actually get unemployment checks started. I know I need to file with Washington ESD but I have no idea what the actual process looks like or how long it takes to get money. Do I need to go somewhere in person or is it all online? How much paperwork is involved? I'm really stressed about paying rent next month so any help would be appreciated.

Everything is done online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. You'll need to create an account and file your initial application first. After that gets approved, you'll file weekly claims every week to actually receive payments. The whole process can take 2-3 weeks before you see your first check.

•2-3 weeks?? I was hoping to get something faster than that. Is there any way to speed it up?

•Unfortunately no, that's just how long their system takes to process everything. Make sure you file your application as soon as possible though.

The initial application asks for a ton of information - your work history for the past 18 months, reason for separation, Social Security number, etc. Have all that ready before you start. Also make sure you're actually eligible - you need to have worked enough hours and earned enough wages in your base period.

•What's a base period? And how do I know if I worked enough hours?

Myles Regis
•Base period is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters. Washington ESD will tell you if you qualify when you apply, but generally you need to have worked and earned wages in at least 2 quarters.

Just a heads up - calling Washington ESD is basically impossible these days. I spent weeks trying to get through when my claim got stuck. If you run into problems and need to talk to someone, there's actually a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to ESD agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of frustration.

•Never heard of that before. Is it legit or one of those scam services?

Brian Downey
•It's legit - they just help you get through the phone system faster. I was skeptical too but it actually worked when I needed to resolve an adjudication issue.

ugh the whole system is such a nightmare. took me 6 weeks to get my first payment because they kept asking for more documents. make sure you upload everything they ask for right away or you'll be waiting forever

•What kind of documents did they want from you?

•pay stubs, separation notice from my employer, ID verification. just be ready for them to ask for random stuff at any time

Once your initial claim is approved, you'll need to file a weekly claim every week to certify that you're still unemployed and looking for work. This is super important - if you miss filing a weekly claim, you won't get paid for that week. You can file online starting Sunday for the previous week.

•So I have to do something every single week? What if I forget?
0 coins
Khalil Urso
•Yes, every week. Set a reminder on your phone. If you forget, you usually can't go back and claim that week later.

•Actually you can sometimes file a late claim but you have to have a good reason and it's a hassle. Better to just stay on top of it.

Don't forget about the job search requirements! You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of all your activities. They can audit you at any time and if you can't prove you were looking for work, they'll make you pay everything back.

•3 per week seems like a lot. What counts as a job search contact?
0 coins
Ally Tailer
•Applying for jobs, contacting employers, attending job fairs, networking events. Check WorkSourceWA too - they have resources and some activities there count toward your requirements.

The weekly claim process is pretty straightforward once you get used to it. They'll ask if you worked any hours that week, if you looked for work, if you're able and available for work, etc. Just answer honestly - if you worked some hours, they'll deduct from your benefit amount but you might still get a partial payment.

•What if I get offered a part-time job while I'm on unemployment? Should I take it?
0 coins
Myles Regis
•Usually yes, as long as you report the hours and wages. Washington has a partial benefits program so you might still get some unemployment money even if you're working part-time.

One thing nobody tells you is that your unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your payments or pay them later. I'd recommend having them withheld so you don't get hit with a big tax bill next year.

Nasira Ibanez
•Great point, I wouldn't have thought of that. How do I set up the tax withholding?

Jacinda Yu
•You can change your withholding preference online in your ESD account or when you file your weekly claims.

also be prepared for your claim to possibly go into adjudication if there's any issue with why you lost your job. if you were fired or quit, they'll investigate and that can add weeks to the process. mine took over a month because my ex-boss lied about why i was let go

•I was laid off due to company downsizing so hopefully that won't be an issue for me.

Callum Savage
•Layoffs are usually pretty straightforward but sometimes employers contest claims anyway to keep their unemployment tax rates low. Just be honest about everything.

If your claim does get stuck in adjudication or you have any issues, definitely consider using that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. I tried calling ESD for three weeks straight and never got through. Claimyr got me connected to an actual person in like 20 minutes and I was able to get my issue resolved same day.

•How much does something like that cost though? I'm already tight on money.

•It's worth checking out their site to see current options. For me it was way better than losing weeks of benefits because I couldn't reach anyone at ESD.

The maximum weekly benefit in Washington is currently around $999 per week, but your actual amount depends on your past wages. The system calculates it automatically based on your earnings in your base period. You'll see your estimated weekly benefit amount when you complete your application.

Nasira Ibanez
•Is there a minimum amount too? I wasn't making a huge salary at my last job.
0 coins
Khalil Urso
•Yes, there's a minimum weekly benefit amount but as long as you qualified for unemployment at all, you should get something decent.

Make sure you keep checking your ESD account online regularly. Sometimes they'll send you messages or requests for additional information and if you don't respond quickly, it can delay your payments. I almost missed a deadline because I wasn't checking frequently enough.

Nasira Ibanez
•How often should I be checking it?

Callum Savage
•I'd say at least every few days, especially in the first few weeks after you apply. They love to ask for random documents at the worst times.

One more tip - if you have direct deposit set up, your payments will come faster than waiting for a debit card or check in the mail. You can set up direct deposit when you file your application or add it later in your account settings.

Nasira Ibanez
•Definitely want to do direct deposit. How long does it usually take for payments to show up in your bank account?
0 coins
Myles Regis
•Usually 1-2 business days after ESD processes your weekly claim. So if you file your weekly claim on Sunday, you might see the money by Tuesday or Wednesday.

just start the application process asap. even if you're missing some info you can always update it later. the sooner you file the sooner your waiting week starts counting

Nasira Ibanez
•What's a waiting week?
0 coins
Khalil Urso
•Washington doesn't have a waiting week anymore, so you can get paid for your first week of unemployment if you're eligible. That changed a few years ago.

The hardest part honestly is just getting started. Once you get through that initial application and your first few weekly claims, it becomes pretty routine. The website can be slow sometimes but it's mostly straightforward.

•Thanks everyone, this has been really helpful. I'm going to start my application tonight.

•Good luck! Don't get discouraged if the process takes a while. Most people do eventually get their benefits.

And remember, if you run into any problems where you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD, save yourself the headache and check out Claimyr. Their service really does work for getting through the phone lines when you need help with claim issues.

•I'll definitely keep that in mind if I run into problems. Hopefully everything goes smoothly though.

•lol 'smoothly' and 'ESD' don't usually go together but yeah hopefully you'll be one of the lucky ones
