How to get paid unemployment benefits through Washington ESD - complete process?
I just lost my job last week and I'm completely lost on how to actually get paid unemployment benefits. I know Washington ESD handles this but I have no idea where to start or what the actual steps are to get money coming in. Do I just apply online and then wait for checks? How long does it take? I'm stressed about rent next month and need to understand the whole process from start to finish.

First step is filing your initial claim at esd.wa.gov. You'll need your social security number, employment history for the last 18 months, and reason for separation from your job. After that gets approved, you have to file weekly claims every week to actually receive payments.

•Do I file the weekly claims right away or wait for approval first?

•Wait for your initial claim to be processed first, then you'll get instructions on when to start filing weekly claims.

just did this myself last month, took about 2 weeks to get my first payment after filing. make sure you have direct deposit set up or it takes even longer

•Good to know about direct deposit - I'll set that up when I apply. Did you have any issues with the application?

•nah it was pretty straightforward just took forever to get through on the phone when I had questions

The key thing people miss is the job search requirement. You need to do 3 job search activities per week and keep a log of them. WorkSource registration is also required. Without these, your weekly claims will get denied even if everything else is approved.

•What counts as a job search activity? Just applying for jobs?

•Job applications, networking events, career fairs, WorkSource workshops, updating your LinkedIn profile - there's a whole list on the Washington ESD website.

•I got dinged for not doing enough job search activities in my second week. They're really strict about the 3 per week minimum.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone (which you probably will), I recently discovered this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that actually gets you connected to a real person. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of busy signals when I needed to check on my claim status.

•That sounds too good to be true - does it actually work?

•Yeah it worked for me within like 20 minutes. Way better than sitting on hold for hours or getting hung up on.

•I've heard about Claimyr from other people too. Might be worth trying if you can't get through the normal way.

MAKE SURE YOU FILE YOUR WEEKLY CLAIMS ON TIME!!! I missed one week because I forgot and it messed up my whole payment schedule. You have to file every single week even if you're still waiting for approval on other stuff.

•What day of the week do you file? Is there a specific deadline?

•You can file Sunday through Saturday but I always do mine on Sunday morning so I don't forget. They give you a specific day based on your SSN.

the whole system is a nightmare honestly. took me 6 weeks to get my first payment because they kept asking for more verification documents

Omar Farouk
•What kind of verification did they want?

•pay stubs from my last job, some form about why I was laid off, bank statements. just be prepared to send a lot of paperwork

•That's usually only if there's something unclear about your separation reason or work history. Most people don't need extra verification.

Quick tip - set up your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account before you file your claim. It makes the whole process smoother and you'll need it anyway for weekly claims.

•Is that different from the regular Washington ESD website?

•SAW is like the login system for all Washington state services. You use it to access your unemployment account on the ESD site.

Don't panic if your claim goes into adjudication - that just means they're reviewing something about your case. Mine was in adjudication for 3 weeks but eventually got approved and I got all the back pay.

Omar Farouk
•What does adjudication mean exactly? That sounds scary.

•It just means a human needs to look at your case instead of it being automatically approved. Could be anything from verifying your work history to checking your separation reason.

•Mine went to adjudication because my employer contested the claim. Took forever but I won the appeal.

Also important - your weekly benefit amount is based on your earnings in your base period, which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 quarters before you filed. So if you just started working recently, you might not qualify for much.

•I've been working for about 2 years so hopefully that's enough history.

•Two years should be plenty. The calculator on the Washington ESD website can give you an estimate of your weekly benefit amount.

be prepared for the website to crash a lot, especially on sundays when everyone is filing their weekly claims. i usually try to file mine late at night or early morning

•Good to know - I'll avoid peak times when I'm filing.

•Yeah the site is terrible during busy times. Sometimes I have to try multiple times just to submit my weekly claim.

One thing that helped me was calling right when they open at 8am. Still took 45 minutes to get through but way better than trying during the day. Though honestly, using that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier would have saved me so much time.

•I'm definitely going to try Claimyr if I can't get through the normal way.

•Yeah I wish I had known about it earlier. Would have saved me hours of my life sitting on hold.

Make sure you understand the waiting week - there's a one week waiting period before you can receive benefits, so your first payable week is actually your second week of unemployment.
0 coins
Omar Farouk
•So even if I file right away, I won't get paid for the first week?
0 coins
Zoe Papadakis
•Exactly. The first week is unpaid, then you start getting paid from week 2 onwards if everything goes smoothly.

also dont forget about taxes! unemployment benefits are taxable income so you can either have taxes withheld or pay them later. i learned that the hard way at tax time

Omar Farouk
•Good point - I'll opt for withholding so I don't get hit with a big tax bill later.

Jamal Edwards
•Yeah definitely withhold taxes. I owed like $800 last year because I didn't think about it.

Just to summarize the complete process: 1) File initial claim online, 2) Register with WorkSource, 3) Wait for approval (1-2 weeks typically), 4) File weekly claims every week, 5) Do 3 job search activities per week, 6) Keep detailed records of everything. The key is staying on top of the weekly requirements.

•No problem! The system seems complicated at first but once you get into the routine it's manageable.

I tried Claimyr last month when I couldn't get through to resolve an issue with my weekly claim. Worked exactly like they show in their demo video. Got connected to an actual Washington ESD rep in about 15 minutes instead of the usual 2+ hour wait times.

•Same here, Claimyr saved my sanity when I was dealing with an adjudication issue. Much better than the regular phone system.

one last tip - take screenshots of everything! your weekly claim confirmations, your job search log, any correspondence from washington esd. if something goes wrong you'll need proof of what you submitted

•Great advice - I'll start documenting everything from day one.
