How to get an unemployment check from Washington ESD - new to the system
I just lost my job last week and I'm completely new to this whole unemployment thing. I keep hearing people talk about getting unemployment checks but I honestly don't know where to start. Do I just apply online? How long does it take to actually get money? I'm really stressed about paying my rent next month and could use some guidance on how to get an unemployment check from Washington ESD. Any help would be appreciated!

First step is filing your initial claim at esd.wa.gov. You'll need your SSN, employment history for the last 18 months, and reason for separation. After that gets approved, you file weekly claims every Sunday to certify you're still unemployed and looking for work.

•Thanks! Do I need to wait for approval before I can start filing weekly claims?

•No, you can file your first weekly claim the Sunday after you submit your initial application. Just make sure you're actively job searching.

make sure you have all your documents ready before you start the application. i made the mistake of starting without everything and had to stop halfway through

•What documents do I need exactly? I have my last paystub but that's about it.

•You'll need employment dates, employer addresses, gross wages, and reason for separation for each job in the last 18 months. If you were fired, be honest about why.

The whole process can be super frustrating because getting through to Washington ESD by phone is nearly impossible. I spent weeks trying to get answers about my claim status. Finally found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that actually got me through to an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Game changer for me.

•Is that legitimate? I'm worried about scams with all this unemployment stuff.

•Yeah it's real. They just help you get through the phone system, they don't ask for your personal info or anything sketchy. I was skeptical too but it worked.

•I've heard of Claimyr too, seems like a lot of people are using it when they can't reach Washington ESD directly.

Timeline wise, if everything goes smoothly you might see your first payment 2-3 weeks after filing. But that's if there are no issues with your claim. Many people get stuck in adjudication which can add weeks to the process.

Chad Winthrope
•What's adjudication? That sounds scary.

Nina Fitzgerald
•It's when Washington ESD needs to investigate something about your claim - like if you quit vs were fired, or if there are questions about your eligibility. Don't panic if it happens, just be patient.

•My claim was in adjudication for 6 weeks! Nearly drove me crazy but it finally got resolved.

The weekly claims are important - you HAVE to file them every week even if you haven't heard back about your initial claim yet. I missed the first two weeks because I didn't know and lost those payments forever.

Chad Winthrope
•Wait, you can lose payments permanently? That's terrifying.

Paige Cantoni
•Yes, you only get paid for weeks you actually file claims. So even if your initial claim is pending, keep filing weekly claims to preserve those benefit weeks.

Also don't forget about the job search requirements. You need to do 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. WorkSource has some activities that count too.

Chad Winthrope
•3 per week seems like a lot. What counts as a job search activity?

Liam Cortez
•Applying for jobs, networking events, career fairs, updating your resume, taking WorkSource workshops. They have a list on the Washington ESD website.

•Just make sure you keep detailed records. Washington ESD can audit your job search log at any time and if you can't prove you did the activities, they'll make you pay back benefits.

honestly the whole system is a nightmare. took me 2 months to get my first check and that was with calling every single day

•Two months?! I can't wait that long to pay bills.

•hopefully yours goes smoother than mine did. mine got flagged for some identity verification thing that took forever

Pro tip: set up direct deposit when you file your claim. Getting paper checks takes even longer and they can get lost in the mail. The debit card option is faster than checks but direct deposit is still the quickest.

Chad Winthrope
•Good to know! I'll definitely do direct deposit.

Kylo Ren
•yeah the paper checks are slow as hell, learned that the hard way

One thing that helped me was registering with WorkSource right away. It's required anyway and some of their services count toward your job search requirements. Plus they have job postings that might not be elsewhere.

•Do I have to register immediately or can I wait a few days?

Kiara Fisherman
•You have to register within a certain timeframe but I'd do it right away to be safe. Better to get it out of the way.

Make sure you understand what your weekly benefit amount will be. It's based on your wages from the base period, not your most recent job. Mine was way less than I expected because I had a period of lower earnings.

Chad Winthrope
•How do I find out what my benefit amount will be?
0 coins
Makayla Shoemaker
•Washington ESD will send you a monetary determination letter after you file that shows your weekly benefit amount and how many weeks you're eligible for.

Nina Fitzgerald
•The base period is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you filed. So recent wage increases might not count toward your benefit amount.

If you run into problems and can't get through to Washington ESD, seriously consider using Claimyr. I was stuck for weeks trying to resolve an issue with my claim and they got me connected to an agent in minutes. Worth every penny when you're stressed about money.

•How much does something like that cost?

•I'd rather not get into pricing details here, but check their website. For me it was worth it because I was losing sleep over not being able to reach anyone at Washington ESD.

Just went through this whole process last month. The key is being patient but persistent. Don't give up if you hit roadblocks - there's usually a solution, it just takes time to figure out.

Chad Winthrope
•Did you have any major issues during your application?
0 coins
Emma Olsen
•Yeah, they needed additional documentation about my job separation. Took about 3 weeks to resolve but once it was fixed, payments started coming regularly.

Also be prepared for the possibility that your first few payments might be delayed while they verify everything. It's frustrating but normal. Just keep filing your weekly claims and eventually it all catches up.

Chad Winthrope
•So I might get multiple weeks of payments at once when it finally goes through?
0 coins
Lucas Lindsey
•Exactly. You'll get back pay for all the weeks you filed claims for, assuming you were eligible.

Important: be completely honest on your application and weekly claims. If Washington ESD finds out you provided false information, they can make you pay back all benefits plus penalties. The consequences are serious.

•What kind of things do people lie about that get them in trouble?
0 coins
Nina Fitzgerald
•Usually about why they lost their job, whether they're working part-time, or their job search activities. Just be truthful about everything.

•this is so important!! i know someone who had to pay back thousands because they weren't honest about some side work they were doing

One more thing - if you're denied for any reason, you can appeal. Don't just give up if your initial application gets rejected. Sometimes it's just a misunderstanding that can be cleared up.

Chad Winthrope
•How long do you have to appeal if you get denied?
0 coins
Austin Leonard
•I think it's 30 days from the date on the determination letter, but don't quote me on that. Check the letter for exact deadlines.

The online system can be glitchy sometimes. If you're having technical issues, try different browsers or clear your cache. I had problems with Chrome but Firefox worked fine.

Chad Winthrope
•Good tip! I'll keep that in mind if I run into website problems.

Last piece of advice - save every email, letter, and document related to your claim. If issues come up later, you'll need that paper trail. I keep everything in a folder just in case.

Chad Winthrope
•That's smart. I'll start a file right away.

•yes! keeping records saved me when they questioned some of my job search activities months later

Don't stress too much about making mistakes on your first claim. The system is confusing and most people mess something up initially. The important thing is to fix errors quickly if Washington ESD contacts you about them.

Chad Winthrope
•Thanks for saying that. This whole process feels overwhelming but you've all been really helpful.

•We've all been there! Once you get through the initial setup, the weekly claims become routine.

Also worth mentioning - if you find work before your benefits run out, you still need to report it on your weekly claim. Don't just stop filing claims without properly closing them out.

Chad Winthrope
•What happens if you just stop filing without reporting that you found work?
0 coins
Isla Fischer
•It can cause issues later if you need to file again. Better to properly close out your claim by reporting your return to work.

Good luck with your claim! The process is definitely stressful but most people do get through it eventually. Just take it one step at a time and don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it.

•And remember, if you can't get through to Washington ESD when you need help, Claimyr is there as a backup option. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person.
