How to get unemployment pay approved faster in Washington state?
I just lost my job last week and need to figure out how to get unemployment pay started. I know I need to file with Washington ESD but I'm confused about all the steps. Do I just go online and fill out forms? How long does it take to actually get money? I've heard horror stories about people waiting months. What's the fastest way to get through this process without screwing something up?

First thing - file your initial claim on the Washington ESD website as soon as possible. Don't wait! You can't get benefits for weeks before you file. The online application walks you through everything step by step. Make sure you have your social security number, employment history for the last 18 months, and reason for separation ready.

•Thanks! Do I need pay stubs or just the basic info about where I worked?

•Just the basic employment info for the application - dates, employer names, wages earned, reason you left each job. They might ask for documentation later if there are questions.

After you file your initial claim, you have to file weekly claims every week to get paid. Even if your claim isn't approved yet, keep filing those weekly claims! I made the mistake of not doing that my first time and lost out on benefits.

•How do I know if I qualify? I was laid off but it was a pretty new job, only worked there 8 months.

•You need to have earned enough wages in your base period. Washington ESD will calculate this automatically when you apply. 8 months might be enough depending on how much you earned.

The biggest delays happen when claims go into adjudication. This happens if there are questions about why you left your job, eligibility issues, or if your employer disputes the claim. If you get stuck in adjudication and can't reach anyone at Washington ESD by phone, there's actually a service called Claimyr that helps people get through to ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that before. Is it legit or just another scam targeting desperate people?

Demi Hall
•It's legitimate - they just help you get through the phone queue when ESD's lines are jammed. Saved me weeks of trying to call manually when my claim got stuck.

•Good to know this exists in case I run into problems. Hopefully I won't need it but better to know ahead of time.

Make sure you're ready to start looking for work immediately. Washington has work search requirements - you need to do at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. This includes applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking, etc. They can audit this at any time.

•Do I have to start job searching right away or can I take a week to decompress first?

•You need to be able and available for work from day one of your claim. Take time to process but don't delay the job search requirements.

ugh the whole system is so confusing!! I'm going through this right now and it's been 3 weeks since I filed and still nothing. My claim just says 'pending' with no explanation. I've called probably 50 times and either get busy signal or get disconnected after waiting on hold forever.

•That's really frustrating. Have you checked if there are any issues showing in your online account that need to be resolved?

Philip Cowan
•I've checked everything and there's nothing showing that I need to do. It's like it's just sitting there in limbo.

•This is exactly the kind of situation where Claimyr helps - when you're stuck and can't get through to talk to anyone. Might be worth trying if you've been waiting 3 weeks already.

One thing to remember - your first payment might be delayed because of the waiting week. Washington doesn't have a waiting week anymore but processing still takes time. Most people see their first payment 2-3 weeks after filing if there are no issues.

•Is there any way to speed up the processing time?

Caesar Grant
•Not really - just make sure all your information is accurate and complete when you file. Mistakes cause delays.

I filed my claim online and it seemed pretty straightforward. The website walks you through everything. Just be prepared to wait - even with everything filed correctly, the system is slow. Don't panic if you don't hear anything for a couple weeks.

•That's reassuring to hear from someone who just went through it. Did you have any issues or was it smooth sailing?

Mateusius Townsend
•Pretty smooth for me, but I was laid off clearly due to lack of work. If your separation is more complicated it might take longer.

Don't forget you might need to register with WorkSource WA too, depending on your situation. They'll tell you if it's required when you file your claim.

Darren Brooks
•What's WorkSource WA? Is that different from filing the unemployment claim?
0 coins
Lena Schultz
•It's the state job search system. Some people are required to register there as part of their unemployment requirements.

Just want to emphasize again - file those weekly claims EVERY week even if you haven't been approved yet. You can't go back and claim weeks you missed filing for.

•Got it - so I file the initial claim first, then weekly claims after that?

Elliott luviBorBatman
•Exactly. Initial claim first, then weekly claims every week you want to claim benefits.

The Washington ESD website has a lot of good information if you poke around. There are FAQs and guides that explain most of the common questions. Definitely worth reading through before you file.

•Good suggestion - I'll check that out before diving in.

One more tip - keep good records of everything. Save confirmation numbers, print out important pages, keep track of dates. If anything goes wrong, you'll need this documentation.

•That's smart advice. I'm already making a folder to keep everything organized.

•Yes! I learned this the hard way when I had to appeal a decision and needed to prove dates and details.

If your employer contests your claim, be prepared for it to take longer. They have time to respond and it might go to adjudication. Just stay patient and keep filing your weekly claims.

•My layoff was clearly due to budget cuts so hopefully there won't be any contest from them.

Mae Bennett
•That should make things smoother for you then. Budget layoffs are usually pretty clear cut.

Update on my situation - I finally got through to someone using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Turns out my claim was stuck because of some verification issue that wasn't showing up online. The agent was able to fix it in like 10 minutes. Wish I had known about this weeks ago!

•Glad it worked out! That's exactly what I was talking about - sometimes you just need to actually talk to a person to resolve these things.

•That's great news! Good to know there's a backup option if I run into issues.

•Okay I'm convinced this Claimyr thing is legit if it actually worked for you. Might have to try it myself if I get stuck.

Just remember the weekly claim filing deadline - you have to file by the end of the week for that week's benefits. If you miss the deadline, you might lose that week.

Darren Brooks
•What day of the week is the deadline?

Beatrice Marshall
•Weekly claims are due by midnight Saturday for the week ending that Saturday. So don't wait until Sunday!

The whole process stressed me out so much when I first filed, but it's really not that complicated once you get started. The anxiety of not knowing is worse than actually doing it.
0 coins
Darren Brooks
•That's encouraging. I've been putting it off because it seems overwhelming but I need to just jump in.

Melina Haruko
•Exactly - just start with the initial application and take it one step at a time.

For benefit amount calculations, it's based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. Washington ESD will calculate this automatically, but you can get an estimate on their website if you want to know ahead of time.
0 coins
Darren Brooks
•Is there a minimum amount you have to have earned to qualify?
0 coins
Rosie Harper
•Yes, there are minimum wage requirements but they're pretty detailed. The application will tell you if you qualify when you apply.

Pro tip: if you're getting any severance pay, that might affect when your benefits start. Make sure to report it accurately when you file.

•I'm not getting severance but good to know for others who might be.

The most important thing is to file as soon as possible after losing your job. You can't backdate claims in most cases, so every day you wait is potentially lost benefits.

Just wanted to add - if you worked in multiple states recently, you might need to file in a different state depending on where you earned the most wages. Washington ESD can help figure this out if you're not sure.

•I've only worked in Washington so that shouldn't be an issue for me.

The system has gotten better over the years but it's still not perfect. Be patient with the website - sometimes it's slow or has maintenance downtime.
